A group of 36 Republican Georgia legislators, along with several former lawmakers and local officials, is seeking to help "draft" former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., into a run for the Oval Office next year.
"We've got good people that are out there running, but none of them are perfect," said state Sen. Eric Johnson, R-Savannah, who is leading the "Draft Fred" movement in Georgia. "Sen. Thompson's got a great record."
Sen. Johnson, who used the term "Fredheads" to describe Mr. Thompson's supporters, said the former senator's communication skills and "pro-life, pro-gun, anti-tax record" are his main selling points.
"He has the ability to look America in the eye, not blink, and tell us where he wants to go," he said...
Charles Bullock, a professor of political science at the University of Georgia, said the Draft Fred movement could only be a boon to Mr. Thompson's campaign if he decides to run.
"If Thompson harbors any presidential ambitions, nothing could be better than for Republican leaders around the country to call on him to come forth and save the party," he said.
If the movement becomes popular among Republicans, it could go a long way toward helping Mr. Thompson catch up with his opponents in fundraising, Dr. Bullock said.
The Fredheads are the largest group of lawmakers in Georgia who have yet endorsed a candidate.
Other Georgia Republicans have shown enthusiasm for a Thompson campaign. Mr. Thompson handily won a straw poll at last week's state Republican convention, nearly tripling the percentage of the vote of his nearest opponent, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga...

I will not vote for someone I don't have time to vet out.
Fred needs to do this - soon. I will not vote for someone I don't have time to vet out.
Edited for reformatting
Pingaling
Do we have a clue where that is, and will his record support his vision?
You need to visit the link on post #1. All questions are answered regarding his record.
I like Fred but I am not in the mood for a ‘concensus’ candidate.
You and me both.
I don’t understand the hurry. If he announces in July that is still 6-8 months before any primaries. Plenty of time to do your homework on him. I think he is smart. He is getting fae and voice time on tv without equal time kicking in yet. He’ll announce soon, patience padouin.
I for one tend to not like anyone who announces more than a year ahead of primaries, they want it too bad.
Please FReepmail jellybean if you want on/off this list. WARNING: This ping list is EXTREMELY active.
He needs to get in or stay out. I gave up on coy schoolgirls a long time ago.
Just the way I like to do it right wrong or indifferent - just my way.
He’s in. Don’t you get it? This is a brilliant campaign!
Don’t you just love all these “cut off nose to spite face” comments?
“Vetting for Voting” is the best I’ve heard yet.
Better Fred than Red
FMCDH(BITS)
Today’s announce that Mitt Romney’s Women for Mitt co-chair, Marsha Blackburn has defected to Thompson has sealed the deal.
Fred’s in. He’ll announce when he’s ready.
No way Rep. Blackburn burns her bridges publicly with Romney unless she’s 100% certain Fred’s running. He must have told her, Marsha, I’m in”.
You do realize that the election is 17 months away, right?
And that all the other idiots jumped the gun?
By the time the election rolls around we are going to be quite sick of seeing their sappy faces.
Fred was smart enough to try to avoid that.
>Lawyers line up for Thompson.<
Hey, Sturm. Now why do you suppose they’d do that? Good for business or something?
>He’s in. Don’t you get it? This is a brilliant campaign!<
Brilliant? Or a just a little underhanded? If the guy won’t declare before he’s on HBO, I’d say that makes it pretty clear that he wants his cake and eat it too. Not very admirable in my book.
