Need Some Assistance In Finding Historical Images and Music

Posted on 05/10/2007 6:14:33 AM PDT by PigRigger

I've been given the responsibility of finding Historical Images and Music for a power-point presentation we have to put together at work.

The images (and background music) have to span from the early 1800's to the present time...they will be grouped into the following categories:

- Early 1800's - Union Unrest (Civil War Period) - The Reconciliation of a Nation (Post Civil War) - Turn of the century (Years leading up to WWI) - A World At War (WWI Period) - The War to End All Wars (WWII Period) - The Baby Boom Begins (late 40's to late 70's) - The Information Age Takes Root (80's - 90's) - Homeland Under Attack (2000 to Present)

Instead of just going off blindly into google...I was hoping that someone in Freepland might know of a good site already addressing an image based historical timeline...

Hey it's worth a shot...

All comments welcomed....

For War Between The States music try looking up “97th String Band”. Their site should have a few sample tracks that you can use for your presentation. Images from that period are almost harder to miss than find. Good luck!

Your best bet, since most of what you are looking for are public domain documents, is the Library of Congress.

http://www.loc.gov/index.html

Try that one. Lots and lots of good stuff there. Also, check google for textbook companies, like Holt, Houghtin Mifflin, etc. They use pictures and such you can find that are public domain also.

Good luck on your search.

This is more helpful if you know some towns in the area (Rochester) but you can still search for the topics you are interested in as well as things like the Genessee River (and Brewery) canal, factories, fire houses, etc:

Popular songs in American history.

Also, google "history of music" and midi.

Midi could probably be a good format for background music in a presentation.

NY Public Library Digital Archives

Ancestry Images

Public Domain Music

UVA Virtual Music Libraries

Let us know how you make out.

5th Michigan Regimental Band has some very good civil war music. You can find them on-line. Guy and Carol Smith would be contact persons.
