U.S. proposal to allow chicken imports from China raises health concerns

WASHINGTON: In China, some farmers try to maximize the output from their small plots by flooding produce with unapproved pesticides, pumping livestock with antibiotics banned in other countries and using human feces as fertilizer to increase soil productivity.

But the questionable practices do not end there: Chicken pens are frequently suspended over ponds where seafood is raised, recycling chicken waste as a food source for seafood, according to a leading food safety expert who served as adviser to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Suspect Chinese agricultural practices could soon affect consumers in the United States. Government authorities are working on a proposal to allow chickens raised, slaughtered, and cooked in China to be sold in the United States, and under current regulations, store labels do not have to indicate the origin of the poultry.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, China's top agricultural export goal is opening the U.S. market to its cooked chickens.

I can’t imagine why the Bush administration would touch this with a ten foot pole at the present time. Good grief.

I’m a lot less concerned about bird flu than whatever toxic waste they happen to be feeding the chickens.

If McDonalds and the rest think they can save 2 cents by getting Chinese chicken nuggets, it’s a done deal.

Maybe I need to change my tagline...
WHAT’S RAISED IN CHINA, STAYS IN CHINA!

Sometimes I wonder what meat I am eating at some chinese restaurants? We don’t need their chickens...everything seems to be made in China these days... Enough already...

QUICK WIT!

Well they are full of ‘human feces’, but it doesn’t seem to have increased their productivity!

We are paving over much of our finest farmland at an alarming rate.

Where do the new suburbanites think their food is going to come from?

If importing oil is hazardous to your wealth and national security; importing food is hazardous to your health and biosecurity.

“Again, why in the world would we import ANY sort of chicken products from China??”

Choose a, b. or c:

a. Winding down Bush Admin officials strip mining the American economy for lucrative “consultancy” jobs financed by China after 2008

b. Bush needs to pay off China more for financing his tax “cuts”

c. a and b

There is absolutely NO reason on earth that the US needs to be importing chicken from ANYWHERE, let alone from China.

In the 12 counties that make up the chicken growers in this region we EXPORT $6 BILLION (yes that is a B) a year in chicken.............we have no reason to be importing it, most especially from China.

We need to convince the FDA to require country of origin labeling! Then the consumer can decide if he wants to buy the 2 percent Chinese chicken nuggets for a few pennies more.

What is wrong with the federales on this issue? They are clearly anti-consumer.
