Giuliani Plans to Publicly Embrace Abortion Rights [Rudy declares war on conservatism]
New York Times ^ | May 10, 2007 | By ADAM NAGOURNEY and MARC SANTORA

Posted on 05/09/2007 7:17:06 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

After months of giving ambiguous signals on abortion, Rudolph W. Giuliani is planning to offer a forthright affirmation of his support for abortion rights in public forums, television appearances and interviews in the coming days, despite potential consequences among some conservative voters already wary of his views, aides said yesterday.

At the same time, Mr. Giuliani’s campaign — seeking to accomplish the unusual task of persuading the Republican Party to nominate an abortion rights supporter as its presidential candidate — is eyeing a path to the nomination that would try to de-emphasize the early states in which abortion opponents wield a great deal of influence. Instead they would focus on the so-called mega-primary of Feb. 5, in which voters in states like California, New York and New Jersey are likely to be more receptive to Mr. Giuliani’s social views than voters in states like Iowa and South Carolina. They said that approach became more appealing after Florida, another state they said would be receptive to Mr. Giuliani, voted last week to move its primary forward to the end of January.

The shift in emphasis by Mr. Giuliani comes as his campaign has struggled to deal with the fallout from the first Republican presidential candidate debate in which he gave a halting and apparently contradictory responses to questions about his support for abortion rights. Mr. Giuliani’s aides were concerned both because it opened him up to a new round of criticism from abortion critics — who have never been happy with the prospect of a Republican presidential candidate who supports abortion rights — while threatening to undercut his image as a tough-talking iconoclast who does not equivocate on tough issues.

How about PMG? That would push me to take retirement for sure.

No appointive jobs inside USPS, but there is always the Board of Governors, and best of all The Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee.

Maybe Rudy would like that stamp thing.

I saw a cartoon on Pookies funnies that had that basic theme (Rudy thinking that he could save himself a bunch of trouble simply by appealing to his true audience and running as a liberal) so you aren’t alone in that. I have no doubt that he would attract many libs compared to the pitiful offerings of the Dhimmi’s.

I owe the rudybots a debt of gratitude - there was a time when I said that I’d cast my vote for him if he became the GOP candidate. No longer. Thank you Rudybots for showing me what I would have been supporting!

This isn't an argument over abortion but an argument centering on public funding for abortion.

Take public funding out of the equation and abortion wouldn't be an issue in a presidential campaign.

I love Fred, I truly do, and I would vote for him...but he looks so old, sick and tired! Is he up to it?

I was still in grade school at the time but I remember the exact same thing being said about former Governor Reagan, plus an added insinuation of senility. From what I know of him, Fred Thompson would make an excellent president with similar wisdom.

Mayor Giuliani might be thinking about some sort of twisted unity ticket to “unify America” or some such rot.

Interesting.

EEK! Just when I think I can’t figure anything out, you offer this... :) Does Rudy have some special polls that tell him this is viable (being aggresively, in your face pro-choice) - (the earlier primaries are a stupid, short sighted idea). And/Or, is he so egotistical that he wants to say “Nuts” to all of the Republican base and self-immolate?

Interesting information! And I note the name Fertitta is mentioned. One of Clinton’s best fund-raising buddies in Houston is a guy by the name of Tillman Fertitta (if my spelling is correct), and Tillman owns a lot of land and several restaurants in the Galveston/Houston area today.

Bell Star could give you more information on Tillman.

Staggering, isn’t it? It’s like 1 in 4 pregnancies end in abortion.

ONE IN FOUR!!

It breaks my heart! Just think—the most dangerous place for a baby is where he should be the safest—in his MOTHER’S WOMB!

This is a line I WILL NOT cross. If that makes me a one-issue voter, then so be it. I am not going to stand before God and say, “Yes, I know, but I didn’t want to be a one-issue voter.”

And my husband feels the same way. There are certain lines we just will not cross. Vote for an anti-life (see, I can use their buzz words, too) candidate? No way!

I have always been a big Hannity fan, but I am disappointed in him.

I called him on his support for Arnold, and now Rudy.

If not his love of gun control, maybe it is his support of special rights for queers?

Or Rusy's support for "sanctuary cities", cities like his own NYC and SF whose mayors and/or other political leaders have made it official city policy to deliberately obstruct federal law enforcement's efforts, such as they are, to enforce federal immigration laws. If those mayors and officials aren't guilty of obstructing justice then I'm a 3-toed Amazon tree frog.

Well, that would clearly free a very large portion to join another party....if a candidate were that outspoken and honest in his thoughts I say good. Let the chips fall. Even if I wouldn’t vote for Rudy I say finally a pol being honest. Now, let him be equally honest about gay marraige.

the 87%-91% of the electorate who don't think a candidate's opinion on abortion is a deal breaker,

LOL! Only somebody from NY could be this out of touch with the what the liberals call "flyover country".

Take a good look at the last election spoofs the dems did of the electorate map of "Jesus Land". There was a reason, one even they were not to blind to see for all of their hatred of Christians.

It should be no surprise that Fertitta would buy as many politicians as they could, and Ghouliani and Clinton are both liberals.

It was probably a package deal.

Jim,

Let’s give Giullani his due. AT LEAST HE AIN’T FAKING IT AND TALKING FROM BOTH SIDES OF HIS MOUTH.

This is how he wants to present himself and this is what he believes. I can tolerate that even when I vehemently disagree with him.

This also means that we REALLY HAVE A CHOICE to make regarding him vs another alternative.

Abortion for me is an important issue but on a hierarchy of issues, I personally don’t rank it on top.

We all have to rnk our issues and score them accordingly.

One thing is sure — if Fred Thompson enters the race, he’s my man.
