Thompson wins Washington GOP straw poll
Sound Politics ^ | 07 May 2007 | Stefan Sharkansky

Not that this necessarily means a whole lot, but it's worth noting. According to the official state party report on Saturday's annual statewide auction dinner:

Fred Thompson was the runaway winner, taking half of all votes cast. Clearly the other candidates have some work to do to match the support that former Sen. Thompson is receiving from grassroots activists. ... Fred Thompson 50% Mitt Romney 16% Rudy Giuliani 15% Duncan Hunter 10% John McCain 5% Tom Tancredo 1% Tommy Thompson 1% Mike Huckabee 1% Newt Gingrich <1%

Ah, yes, and I love the smell of conservatism mixed with patriotism...something most of the “mainstream” GOP candidates know little about.

Thompson is going to win every grassroots straw poll. It will be interesting to see how far that gets him in the primaries and how much $$$ he raises.

Another way to ask that is, are there two GOP’s? Or one? How much does the grassroots matter?

Personally, I think Thompson will be the nominee.

For someone that has yet to announce ... he sure seems like the anointed one.

That alone makes him suspect in my mind.

And if anyone wants to throw their opinion in as to how much a conservative he is ... I give you our own Rick Santorum ... alas ... no longer anointed, yet every bit as, and perhaps more conservative than Thompson.

So it comes down to the anointing.

I'll wait a bit longer ... if Thompson shows himself worthy, I'll consider him.

(This is not a slam against Thompson, just a cautious opinion)

Not that this necessarily means a whole lot

As a Washington State conservative, support from the WA GOP would make me run the other direction.(to the right).

Now if this was the Eastern Wash. branch, it would mean something.

I like Fred, but I wish he’d get busy getting in, or get busy staying out. This waiting is just going to pi** off a lot of people.

Don’t blame you a bit:) I’ve been following Fred since Watergate and when I heard he might be looking at a run I was more excited than I’ve been in years about a candidate..

And being from Wisconsin, I’m guessing the one percent who voted for Tommy Thompson, thought they were voting for Fred.....at least I hope so........

He has won several straw polls, including one in Southern CA, and one in PA, I believe.
