Faced with a clear challenge to the unambiguous language of the Constitution, many GOP leaders have abandoned their principles. Particularly shocking is the defection of Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). As a former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Hatch should view himself as a guardian of the Constitution. Instead, he set a low price for violating the document, a price that the Democratic majority says it will eagerly pay: one congressional seat. At issue is granting voting representation to the District of Columbia. (The District, like American Samoa, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, already has non-voting delegates; Puerto Rico has a similar resident commissioner.) Adding a seat to Utah is meant to maintain the partisan balance. The measure has already passed the House with 22 GOP votes. Former Rep. Jack Kemp (R-N.Y.) roamed the halls, calling the measure a civil rights issue.

Especially surprising since Bush will likely veto this bill, and they don’t have near enough support to override the veto.
President Hillary will gladly sign such a bill.
Jack Kemp is even less concerned about the Constitution, complaining about members who “literally walk away, saying the bill is unconstitutional. Unconstitutional? They voted for the Patriot Act!” Is his argument that if legislators voted for one unconstitutional bill, they should vote for another one? If that’s his attitude, why bother having a Constitution?
This is what Conservatism has come to? Comparing the Patriot Act to amending the Constitution by simple majority in the Congress?
Jack Kemp is hereby bestowed with the liberal Clown Nose of Infamy, he is a joke and should no longer be taken seriously.

Kemp, Hatch, the President, all of the Beltway Republicans, have spent too much time up there; they’ve become liberal and out of touch; we need a new, truly conservative generation of leadership, with some clue as to what life is like in ordinary America
Hillary will sign the bill Without the Utah Compromise.
Ya, that’s what I would be afraid of. All these Republicans agreeing in principle that DC should get a seat in Congress, but the next Congress and next President could then pull the extra Utah seat out of the compromise.
And if there are more Dems. in the next Congress, with Pres. Hillary, watch out.
By the way, folks, I read some time ago that Utah even then was 10% Hispanic, and I would assume that many in that percentage are illegal; it is not the overwhelmingly Mormon, Republican safe seat it once was.
This would be the Camel’s nose under the tent..
Next will be seats in the Senate....
The Constitution be damned..
If this is the path the DNC desires, then let them attempt to amend the Constitution.
You can't separate this issue from political correctness and modern racial politics, it is the fear of being seen denying the vote to blacks that drives the Republicans who support this.

Even Mike Pence is onboard for this extra Constitutional law making foray.
The proposal to give representation in MD makes a sort of sense, but then again, if they feel that strongly about it, they could simply move there instead of trying to extort money from taxpayers through a House seat.

Utah would have gotten another seat ANYWAY after the next census, and at the expense of an Eastern liberal state like New York or Wisconsin, thus robbing the Dims of a seat.
With THIS silly piece of stuff, the Dims win out!
Why ammend it when your Loyal opposition rolls over and ignores the constitution as much as you do.
Hell the dems just suggest something and repubs in their psychotic thirst to be loved beg to give it to them.
The constitution is nothing but a peice of paper, unless you live by its principles and principles are in damn short supply anymore.

Folks, principles are just that, even “if” Utah ends up with an extra House seat, the Republicans need to show that they respect the Constitutional Process for doing this inside the law.
One of the reasons why we lost this past fall is the Republican party went Beltway a number of years ago, why continue this trend?
