Riot police fired tear gas at stone-throwing protesters gathered in central Paris today to demonstrate against the presidential election victory of right-winger Nicolas Sarkozy, an AFP journalist said.
The clashes took place on the Place de la Bastille where about 5,000 supporters of the defeated Socialist candidate Segolene Royal had gone to await the election results.
Up to 300 rioters, some of whom were masked, made running attacks on riot police who took up positions at the entrance to boulevards leading onto the square.
Earlier a small crowd of protesters, brandishing black and red anarchist flags, set fire to an effigy of Sarkozy in the square before tearing it limb from limb and then stamping on it.

It is.
Riots: Liberal temper tantrums.
I figured that out.. but too late.
Let’s hope the new President will give them “a whiff of grapeshot.”
LOL! Classic! Very funny! LOL!
And why does this change your opinion? The French voted knowing that this would occur. Would you rather of had them vote for Royal to keep the peace?
What has occurred in France is that the people have acknowledged that some butts need to be liberally kicked. Don't expect it to be a peaceful affair. But it is the correct choice. And if you blame them for choosing that way, there is nothing I can say to convince you otherwise.
Well said.
Me thinks these 300 sub-humans are ticked that they'll soon have to work at least a 40-hour week for the first time in their lives and the govt. will not be supporting them from cradle to grave.

Actually, I think what happened is, she got a bad deal on some art.
It is sort of a stylish thing to do. I've noticed that many people across the world like to make protest signs in English to give an international feel to their demonstrations. People in the US tend to underestimate the amount of significance the English language has around the world.
If you want to be stylish in Japan, you wear a shirt with some phrase in English (check out engrish.com for some humorous mistakes). If you want to sound sophisticated and profound in Latin America, you will add some significant quote in English (like "speak softly and carry a big stick"). And if you want to be 'international' in Europe, use some English in your signs.
For Americans this certainly sounds bizarre, but it is useful to think of how we tend to use French or Latin to sound profound. We certainly don't do it to the scale that the rest of the world does but that is because we lack the same motivational forces (since our language isn't as isolated). Sadly, many non-native English speakers tend to feel that their languages are backwards due to their relative isolation in comparison to English so they look up to English as the international standard.
Expect this rioting to last at least a day or two then the “youths” that are rioting will get bored and go home.
Sorry for the lack of clarity in my post. I see the election as a huge positive (based on my limited knowledge of French politics). I am just surprised and saddened for the citizens of France that riots have taken place so soon afterward. I am very optimistic for France as a result of the election and have looked forward to reading the posts on the run-up to the election, and will continue to follow current French politics. (Thanks to all FReepers from France for their posts.)
The French Academy hasn’t decided on that one yet.
Well, I wouldnt want them to make any hasty decisions
Awesome! Just about wet my pants after seeing that. Still laughing as I type. Thank you!!!
Have you no shame? Do you honestly wish for innocent people to be hurt?
Her communist ugly goes clear to the bone.
It's sad how the press reports this sort of event- there is never a person at fault when a leftist commits acts of violence. Future anthropologists won't know what to make of the past 200 years. The country with perhaps the shortest existence of slavery, and one of the few to abolish it, was the only one known for ever owning slaves; The country that provided more generosity to every other nation on earth is known as the only one to continuously exploit women, children, and especially, minorities; The most democratic nation is consistently known for being a dictatorship; (lastly) the nation that shed its own blood for freedom of others is known as imperialistic.
All of this from the benevolent entertainment community and the non-state sponsored media.
