Imagine my suprise to discover that my mtDNA was from the Sa'ami's (Laplanders) and even moreso to discover it was from the Skolt Sa'ami.(Rarest DNA in all of Europe, haplogroup V) My question:
How did a Skolt Sa'ami become a south Alabama farm girl? (My mother)Having your DNA anaysed is becoming popular and I expect to see any number of suprises of this sort (article) in the near future.
BTW, Professor Bryan Sykes has done extensive DNA work in the British Isles and in his latest book, Saxons, Vikings And Celts, he says he can't find any traces of 'Black Irish' or even the Picts in Scotland, DNA wise, they're all the same people.

My brother had his 12 marker done and had absolutely NO MATCHES. My mom’s cousin (different family) just had his done and had 450 twelve marker matches! He’s upgrading his test to narrow it down. But we’re still trying to figure my brother out. Either there aren’t alot of male descendants in that line, or not many have had their DNA tested.

In my family, throughout many lines, there is a story that we are descended from Capt. John Smith and Pocahontas. No official records exist to prove it, but the story is not entirely implausible.

Hi Blam. This is very strange. Laplanders? English Indians?
How much trouble was it to find that out?
Would be very nice if this could somehow end racism, but I doubt it.

The more testing which takes place, the more DNA will shake out, and be reclassified. Either that, or you had some Skolt Salami on a sandwich just before you swabbed your cheek. ;')

Sir Walter Raleigh brought back several individuals from the Jamestown area and from the Orinoco valley.
Talk about a stranger in a strange land! It calls to mind the Indian brought to America by the son of one of the missionaries killed by that tribe in The End of the Spear. He was amazed at how fat everyone was, how much food there was everywhere, and how easy it was to get. He said that the way was to go into the store, load up the carts, and then pass by the people in the checkout lines. He said they wouldn't look at you first but if you kept looking at them and smiling, they'd eventually look at you and return the smile and then let you leave with the food. The missionary's son said he told him that it was a bit more than that, that he had to give them his credit card and that the Indian said, "Yes, but they gave it back to you." And this reminds me of hearing one African woman I know telling another what happened when she got her LINK card replaced. She said the people caused the spirit in the old card to move into the new one. This is the same woman who kept a key on a string around her toddler's neck. Someone asked her if that's how she kept a spare on hand. She said it was to keep his throat open so he wouldn't stop breathing.

Good news! You could be heir to the English Throne. No, not the Queen’s Throne. I mean the Throne down at Paddy’s Pub...

Could have been brought over by Vikings. Could have been a Scraeling who long ago went too far out in his kayak and ended up on the shores of the UK.

: How did a Skolt Sa'ami become a south Alabama farm girl? (My mother) Norse trader marries a Sa'ami. 200 years later a decendent decides taht the farmland around Jarvik sucks and goes a viking. He joins a party that lands near what is now York. The Vikings find little organized resistance but good land. They send for their wives, children, slaves... The Framer and his wife, now in Britain have a few kids. This group, forms a colony, also called Jarvik. The inhabitants intermarry with the indigenous peoples. The city of York is eventually conquered by the English.
Fast forward 800 years and someone goes to Georgia or South Carolina. One of her daughters or grand daughters joins her own husband in finding better land in what had been Indian territory.
PS. I've had fun with my own DNA.
