The other day, a friend of mine asked me why I thought those on the left hate guns so much. My initial reaction was to acknowledge that I have a tough time getting a handle on anything liberals say or think or do. It all seems wacky to me.
Whats more, I have no idea who compiles their playbook, although we are quite aware that they have one. Its where they get all their talking points. For instance, we know that liberals favor affirmative action, although at the same time we also know they like to say that where race is concerned, theyre the ones who are colorblind. They also endorse bilingual education for Latinos even though its a handicap that the youngsters have a tough time overcoming, and may explain why such a depressingly small percent of them hang around high school long enough to graduate.
We know that leftists oppose capital punishment although I, for one, have never heard a compelling argument why a person who takes one or more lives in cold blood should be spared the ultimate punishment.
Furthermore, liberals seem to believe that same-sex marriages, abortions on demand, separation of church and state, not to mention open borders, are all covered somewhere in the U.S. Constitution. But if were going to be honest, one can see why liberals, who are far more prone than conservatives to forsake logic for emotion, would feel as they do about some of these issues.
As I say, I dont know who makes their decisions. But it hardly matters if its a committee consisting of Bill Clinton, James Carville, Howard Dean, Chris Matthews, Nancy Pelosi, Jesse Jackson, Jimmy Carter, Charles Rangel, Barbara Boxer, Keith Olbermann, Michael Moore and Bozo the Clown, who set the agenda or its simply the editorial board of the New York Times. The thing is, theyre in perfect agreement that if only they got to make and enforce all the rules, this would be a far better world.
But why are those on the left so vehemently opposed to decent, law-abiding citizens owning guns? After all, most people -- unlike Hollywood celebrities -- can not afford to surround themselves with armed bodyguards. And as dedicated as the police may be to protect and serve, theyre usually not around at the very moment your life is being threatened. Besides, if liberals had their way and the Second Amendment was repealed, the only people in America with guns would be cops, criminals and the military. Interestingly, of those particular groups, criminals are the ones liberals hate the least.
Frankly, having given it some thought, I believe the reason that the Left hates guns so much is because of us Jews. With very few exceptions, we are terribly squeamish around firearms. The fear is totally irrational. Its not just that we think someone will shoot us with our own gats, but that the guns, themselves, are anti-Semites, and will kill us of their own accord.
Sadly, its more than that. They also fear those Americans whom they most closely associate with gun ownership; namely, southern Christians.
Even though America is the most tolerant nation on earth, Jews tend to think if terrible things happened to their ancestors in 15th century Spain and 19th century Russia and 20th century Nazi Germany, it can and will happen here. Its a form of paranoia. But its a very strange form. For as we all know, this is a nation of 300 million. So, wouldnt you think a minority numbering a mere five million, and in constant fear of pogroms, would spend as much time as possible on the firing range?
That’s an excellent web site, with which I am quite familiar because I happen to be a Jewish gun owner with a CCW permit. 2nd Amendment bump!
I know many US Jews who hate Israel as well. It is strange. When I ask, they say that Israel was illegaly created and that Palestine should be “Freed”
But also remember that this is coming from Madison, WI...
That's the key. You've got to distinguish American Jews from the Israeli people. American Jews are complacent in the civility of our society thinking that somehow we're immune to a HOLOCAUST on our shores. They forget the lessons of history. I was once banned from a seminar given for social studies educators here in Miami Dade County on the Holocaust for over ten years. The guest speaker was an Israeli survivor of the Holocaust and came to tell his story. I sat front and center and come the time for questions my hand was first up. I asked the following:
Q: #1 Why didn't you resist? Why not take up arms?
A: The nazis passed GUN CONTROL LAWS years before they put the first one on a train to the death camps!
Q: #2 Have you been to Israel?
A: It is my home.
Q: #3 What is the incidence of personal firearms ownership among Israeli citizens?
A: (SLAMS fist upon podium for emphasis and shouts the following) Everyone is ARMED. NEVER AGAIN!!!!
Whereupon I spun to face the crowd and said the following: Do you see? Do you understand the nexus of gun ownership to individual freedom? If you do not now return to your classrooms and make this clear you not only condone the first holocaust...you INVITE the second! Not one of that overwhelmingly Jewish and liberal population would meet my eyes.
During the subsequent coffe and brunch the survivor just wanted to chat with me about guns. Everytime somebody else approached, he would snarl at them until they fled. He asked for my personal information (I had no idea why at the time) and he remarked that he knew I was probably going to be in big trouble because of the questions. I just grinned and told him I was an Infantry Captain in the reserves and my day just wasn't complete without a good A$$ chompin'!
Sure enough, my principal was waiting and he chomped on me for a good two hours. I was told of the ban on my participation.
TEN YEARS LATER I was specifically and by name requested to once again attend. What happened? The Israeli government was now in charge of the seminar and they wanted me to contribute to the forum discussions. That old survivor had gone back and reported that the teachers were a bunch of gun haters except for ONE....and they remembered. If I was still working as a teacher they wanted me to come. Wow. I went and had a blast.
He told me his great grandparents were "European" and survived WWII because of "guns and prayers". He said they prayed for guns....hahahahaha.
The funny thing is that the two most adamant groups were his Jewish buddies and some Cuban fellas we'd see at the range. Both had the same perspective about weapons and the fact that they respected our government, but had personal experiences that highlighted the folly of not being armed.
Outstanding!
Coulda said the same thing about German Jews 80 years ago.
Coulda? DID. 'Course that was before the creation of the State of Israel. Born out of the necessity to preserve the remnants of the Holocaust survivors. Well, as they always told me in the army: TRAUMA....TEACHES!

I was at my local Gander Mountain store and they had four different M-1A variants (semi auto) for sale. $1199-$1499.
They are pricey, but worth it if you can afford the cost. If you can see it, you can hit it with one of those.
I have a Jewish friend who went back to Israel last year during the war to volunteer for the reserves. He got to drive a truck back and forth, armed with only a Browning High Power that an IDF captain loaned him.
He said some of the most beautiful young women he’s ever seen were in IDF uniforms.
I think a rabbi would say life is valuable and anyting that could potentially eliminate a life is not good.
That being said, MY life is important too. That’s why my Jewish female self is proud to say I own and can use several guns.
Evil is insidious. It sneaks up on us and suddenly shows istelf when we feel the most secure. The operative word there is “feel”.
You’re hanging out with the wrong crowd, Burt. Most of the folks I know either have a gun or are talking about getting one. But that is yet another difference between secular and observant Jews.
Well, maybe just letting the military and police have guns wasn't such a great idea after all....
It's the only place I've ever been where I've found the track-and-turret mechanics and radio techs attractive, even cute.
