The political left, which holds itself as progressive, rational and fact-based, is becoming an enemy of academic inquiry, and a practitioner of thought control on a wide variety of issues. Increasingly, from the left's perspective, there is just one acceptable viewpoint.
Consider the subjects of evolution, global warming, special rights for homosexuals and abstinence education. Consider efforts of the left to silence conservative talk radio. Consider the mainstream media's arrogant denial of its transparent liberal bias, pronouncing itself to be above politics and inherently objective and its critics somehow skewed.
Consider the leftist refrain that red-state conservatives do not merely possess a different worldview, but are not part of the "reality-based community." Consider the near monolithic liberalism and secularism of our university faculties.
The U.S. House is expected to pass a landmark federal law that would expand hate crimes legislation to include attacks against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens. Opponents argue that it's conceivable under the bill that if a rabbi, priest or pastor reads to his congregation a passage from the Bible condemning homosexuality, he could be considered an accomplice to any parishioner who later commits a "hate crime" against a homosexual.

And this is the group that says we should be “inclusive.” But inclusive only includes left wing thought and speech, as seen on college campuses when conservatives try to speak.
The left has spent years attacking the second amendment. It was just a matter of time before they went after the first amendment as well.
They only needed the 1st Amendment while they destroyed the others. Now it is useless to them.
David Limbaugh hits the nail on the head here. Serious scientific inquiry still needs to happen with global warming. Serious scientifics take the position that there are always variables to consider, and that we may not know all of the facts about an issue. Conclusions drawn by serious scientists are never issued as absolutist doctrine.
And the freedom to express deviation from the orthodoxy on politically correct subjects in eroding.
Just look what they have (and wanted to push through) just as they came to power:
1. Silencing all grassroots Conservative critics while giving a open gate to MOVEON.ORG and other leftist groups
2. Gutting the Military and running from Iraq
3. Passing laws without debate or Committee involvements
4. Passing "HATE CRIME" laws to elevate gays to special protected status while criminalizing anyone who disagrees with their lifestyle.
THe political left is everything it claims to oppose.
And they’re not “progressive, rational and fact based”, either. It’s all about those feeeeelings, of course;)
But what if it was a leader of another widely held faith, reading a tract from the book deemed holy by its believers? Then, any criticism of the speaker, or the book, would be the hate crime. The liberals have tied themselves in knots on this one.
I call them what they are: communist, irrational and fact-free.

Yes, I’ve noted that when leftists talk about “diversity,” they mean diverse races, cultures and lifestyles, but not diverse ideas. Yet more proof that liberalism now means the opposite of what it used to mean.
They still need and use the First Amendment to defend and justify their MSM organs when, for example, they purvey false information against political opponents in government or when they reveal classified information that can aid and abet the Islamofascist enemy.
It's always useful and available to them when applied selectively.
I’ve never understood why they call their ideas “progressive.” Actually, “retrogressive” is more precise term, because just about all of them have been tried and failed miserably at some time in the past.
That's precisely their strategy: they want to obscure their own sins (like bigotry, for example) by tarring their opponents with them. It worked very well in the Soviet Union for nearly a century and now the M. O. has spread worldwide.

That’s too rich! Has anyone else noticed that, in quite a non-oxymoronic fashion, the most frequent usage of the term “progressively” is when it is coupled with “harder” or “worse”?
I always thought the best definition of a progressive was “A solution desperately in search of a problem” ;’}
