The head of the Democratic Party said Wednesday that the best way to get presidential candidates to talk frankly about issues is to lock out the media.
During the Mortgage Bankers Association conference, a banker expressed frustration with candidates who only talk in sound bites and wondered how that could be changed. Howard Dean, once a presidential candidate, offered a simple solution.
"I suggest you have candidates in to meetings like this and bar the press," Dean said.
The Democratic National Committee chairman criticized media coverage, arguing that networks such as CBS used to put content first and didn't mind losing money for the prestige of delivering a quality news report. Dean said the days of Walter Cronkite are gone and the corporatization of the media has led to a desire to boost profits.
"The media has been reduced to info-tainment," Dean said. "Info-tainment sells, the problem is they reach the lowest common denominator instead of forcing a little education down our throats, which we are probably in need of from time to time."
Dean was considered a strong contender for the 2004 Democratic nomination, but after finishing third in the Iowa caucuses, he gave a speech that included a rant punctuated by a scream. The clip was shown repeatedly on television and became the subject of late-night jokes.
Dean said politicians live in fear that their words will be twisted for the sake of headlines. "Politicians are incredibly careful not to say anything if they can possibly help it, except if it is exactly scripted. And if you want to hear anybody's true views, you cannot do it in the same room as the press," Dean said. "If you want to hear the truth from them, you have to exclude the press."
Good idea: keep our platform so secret no one will know what we’re planning. :D
Of course, anyone paying attention knows there ideas are the same as always - raising taxes, letting hateful foreigners over run us, banishing hope and freedom...
Stupid is as Stupid does.
This is unbelievable. Keep the media away from candidates speaking, so that the candidates will not talk in sound bites, but in complete sentences and fully express their positions. Sounds good, but if we never get to hear what they have to say, what good is a closed meeting where they express their positions?
It’s cause the more Dems talk, and the more comfortable they get, the more they show Americans what nuts they are. He just can’t bring himself to say or admit it. They KNOW America doesn’t trust them on the most important issues for Presidents: judicial appointments and defense.
Dems Presidents are good on stuff like school uniforms though./sarc
“This column is side-splittingly funny on so many levels!!”
Just as funny as Rahm Emmanuel saying the Republicans are playing politics with all issues and the Bush admin “scandals” ...the firing of 8 Fed prosecutors.... is almost worse than the Watergate scandal. I plan to call Emmanuel’s office to thank him for the best laugh of the day.
And, let’s just see if the media will still treat the Dems as their darlings if they begin to get shut out of meetings. Then again, even now, the media just spouts Dim talking points so guess the media will save time ...no need to go to meetings/conferences....just read off the Dim paper..
He’s saying he wants Dems to meet in secret with corporate groups. I thought Dems were for the little guy?
One sign in a candidates yard stating this is all it takes, it's cheaper, takes care of CFR issues, and is grass roots.
Vote for me to be your next President!
Thank you,
John Doe
Anywhere USA.
Did mommy drop him on his head when he was young?
I don’t know but this concept must work in Liberal minds!
That pesky Constitution again.
Of course, if it was the REPUBLICANS saying this, you would immediately hear the screams of, “What is it that they want to hide?!!!”
LOL...well this is good NO MEDIA COVERAGE will go a long ways to the bottom of the tank.
More air time for Mitt, Fred, Rudy, and Newt!! YES, works out good!!!
I hope I'm not in violation of Godwin's Law, but Hitler's "Dusseldorf Speech" in 1932 is considered crucial to his success. He spoke to german industrial leaders and convinced them that supporting National Socialism was good for business. As a result, financial contributions to the Nazi Party soared.
Some say that the National Socialists were rightwing. They weren't. Some folks on the Left know how to push the buttons of business leaders, that's all.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-Cuba), speaking at a Democratic party fundraiser in San Francisco yesterday, was remarkably frank about the Democrats' intentions to use socialist redistribution policies if the party gains power after the November elections. As reported by the Associated Press, Sen. Clinton said, "Many of you are well enough off that ... the tax cuts may have helped you. We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good." With her blunt statement, Sen. Clinton has drawn clear the difference between the two major parties: The Marxist Democratic party will "take things away from you on behalf of the common good" while the Republicans will defend your right to spend your money as you see fit because they know it's your money, not the government's.....
says it all.
Why wouldn't they want their "shills" in? ....they just won't report anything "hurtful" to their causes.
If Howard Dean speaks in a closed conference room, and there’s no one there to actually hear him, does he still make a sound like, “AAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHEEEEEEEHAAAAAA?” *SMIRK*
I was actually surprised to read that he’s still head of the DNC! Guess he’s still successfully mincing around ‘She Who Shall Not Be Named.’ ;)
Two words.
Secret ConspiRATcy!
If the puds tried this the DBM would drop a lung/blow an O ring!

Interesting concept- saying what you really think.
Dean’s suggestion- bar the press? And the Dems say the Bush administration is too secretive?
Good going there Howard...keep talking!!!!
I agree, I’m ROTFLOL!!
This idiot wants to lock the press out so the dems can spew their garbage and not be held accountable for it.
