Last week, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Senator John McCain both gained support in the race for the GOP nomination. This week, the top four contenders all lost ground. But, through it all, Giuliani remains on top with a double digit lead.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national poll shows Giuliani with 28%, thirteen points more than McCain’s total of 15%. Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson remains undeclared but in third place with 12% support. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney remains slightly behind Thompson at 10%.
The stability in the GOP competition stands in stark contrast to the Democrats where Illinois Senator Barack Obama has gained ground steadily and is now tied with New York Senator Hillary Clinton.
Giuliani has regained his status as the most popular candidate in either party—62% now have a favorable opinion of him. McCain is viewed favorably by 55%, Thompson by 35%, and Romney by 32%. See updated favorability ratings and general election match-ups for all Republican and Democratic candidates
A separate survey found that 29% of all voters say they would definitely vote for Giuliani if he is on the ballot in November 2008. Thirty-four percent (34%) would definitely vote against him. Those numbers are a bit weaker for Giuliani than they were a month ago, but they are still the best of any Republican Presidential hopeful. For McCain, the numbers are 23% definitely for and 35% definitely against. Those figures have changed little over the past month.
Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D) draws the best overall numbers of any candidate at this time—33% definitely for and 33% definitely against.
Rasmussen Reports releases updated polling data on the Republican nominating contest every Tuesday. Results for the Democrats are updated on Mondays. The current survey is based upon national telephone interviews with 579 Likely Republican Primary Voters conducted April 16-19, 2007. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. (More Below)
... and statistically he has the same third of the Republican electorate that will not support him no matter what as McCain and is climbing faster in that regard.
You have to consider the views and opinions of everyone in the GOP. It is the GOP you know.
Be careful not to be vertical or isolationist with respect to others.

The process of selecting a candidate for the GOP is very healthy.
With a few exceptions - we usually pull out the best candidate for the general election.
State your view - but allow others to state theirs.

No one is denying there are a lot of liberals in the GOP, and they've cause no end of trouble over time. But this website is and always has been CONSERVATIVE, not Republican.
Exactly. If the GOP candidate can’t show a strong backbone by primary time, how will he ever take on the Dims ?
Oh. Pre-announcement polls don’t really count. Last poll I saw was limited to Ohio and he had 12% there, which isn’t bad for a blue state. I still think Thompson has a chance, and if he teamed up with Guiliani, we might have a LOCK on ‘08, which if “real conservatives” had ONE OUNCE of pragmatism, should be what we’re ALL working for: a LOCK on the election. That is what the Democrats are working for.

Yes indeed - we need our candidate to be fully tested.
Most of all - we need to all recognize that 1 year from November we have to be on the same team.
If a Dim candidate wins - the Dim party wins.
If Rudy or Mc Cain win, the Dim party wins.
Electing a RINO is worse than electing a DIM. We still don’t get conservative SCOTUS appts, we won’t gt tax reform or lower taxes, and we sure won’t get lower spending.

why is ANYONE even worried about ANY of this right now? I could care less if our poll numbers are low. It is April, 2006 last time I checked. So much will happen between now and next year when everyone starts getting serious about the election. These number are meaningless.
Yep, altho if Rudy or McCain is the GOP choice I may as well sit out the Pres election. There is no difference between Rudy and Hillary or Obama.
I like Fred, but I see things about him that indicate he is not really enthusiastic in his quest.
If he were so sure of his candidacy, he would have announced several weeks ago. He knows his immediate success, but I believe he was EXPECTING to jump to the front immediately. But since Rudy has remained in the lead and he has stayed neutral, I think he is having second thoughts.
There is his new and young family who needs him, he has Lymphoma and stress tends to make it aggressive. He also has his private life in tact and may be reluctant to give that up for a few short years of complete turmoil.
It is also getting late for any viable candidate to get into the race since most of the large financial commitments have been been made to other candidates. The primaries have also been moved up which makes the timeline even tighter.
Many things to consider, these are a few that I can think of.

Let’s just say that Rudy gets the GOP nod.
Your mission should be to lock his ass into as many true
conservative obligations as possible.
PLEASE - NEVER SIT OUT AN ELECTION...... make yourself count - even if you don’t like the candidate.
Your vote is so precious - it’s so important.
FIGHT - every single day - and if you lose your GOP candidate - make sure your views are never fogotten.
Remember - the election process really never ever ends.
Once in office - you still carry the weight of you views.
Phones - local elections - letters - protests.

I agree. As much as I disagree with Rudy on many positions, supporting him is not some heinous crime against conservatism.

In the end - I predict we will all earn a solid GOP candidate.
It has been said repeatedly that he CAN NOT ANNOUNCE until the Law and Order season is over. That would mean that the rest of the new episodes couldn’t be shown. Maybe commitments mean nothing to you, but they do to Fred Thompson.
Sixty percent of the money normally in the campaign is being withheld. Funny how you leave out all the fact that are against your liberal candidate.
