2008 Republican Presidential Primary - Giuliani 28% McCain 15% Thompson 12%
Rasmussen ^ | 4/24/07

Posted on 04/24/2007 5:35:01 AM PDT by areafiftyone

Last week, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Senator John McCain both gained support in the race for the GOP nomination. This week, the top four contenders all lost ground. But, through it all, Giuliani remains on top with a double digit lead.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national poll shows Giuliani with 28%, thirteen points more than McCain’s total of 15%. Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson remains undeclared but in third place with 12% support. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney remains slightly behind Thompson at 10%.

The stability in the GOP competition stands in stark contrast to the Democrats where Illinois Senator Barack Obama has gained ground steadily and is now tied with New York Senator Hillary Clinton.

Giuliani has regained his status as the most popular candidate in either party—62% now have a favorable opinion of him. McCain is viewed favorably by 55%, Thompson by 35%, and Romney by 32%. See updated favorability ratings and general election match-ups for all Republican and Democratic candidates

A separate survey found that 29% of all voters say they would definitely vote for Giuliani if he is on the ballot in November 2008. Thirty-four percent (34%) would definitely vote against him. Those numbers are a bit weaker for Giuliani than they were a month ago, but they are still the best of any Republican Presidential hopeful. For McCain, the numbers are 23% definitely for and 35% definitely against. Those figures have changed little over the past month.

Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D) draws the best overall numbers of any candidate at this time—33% definitely for and 33% definitely against.

Rasmussen Reports releases updated polling data on the Republican nominating contest every Tuesday. Results for the Democrats are updated on Mondays. The current survey is based upon national telephone interviews with 579 Likely Republican Primary Voters conducted April 16-19, 2007. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. (More Below)

Right now Obama is ahead. After a long hard fight against each other as nasty as this is likely to get. I don’t see that he or Hillary would take a VP slot.

You have that figure confused. It is NOT 34% Republicans who will vote against Giuliani, it is 34% of the VOTERS surveyed who will not vote for Giuliani.

There is one positive I see, and that is that Giuliani has the highest ‘favorability’ rating of all the candidates including the Democtats.

And you think that was a good thing? Getting rid of long time Freepers just because they happen to like another candidate than the one that was assigned to FR?

Poor baby. Need a tissue?

Obama said he doesn’t want the VP slot. He can always stay in the Senate and so can Hillary. They want it all or nothing it looks like.

I don’t want Rudy or any other GOP candidate to walk through
the nomination process.

Our candidate (whoever it is) has to be tested and battle hardened.

If Rudy is the ultimate GOP nominee - he will have to find a way to earn
the respect and the vote of those who don’t like him now.

That’s a fact.

Therefore - we should all want a nice hard - tight battle.

We want to hear all the issues put to debate.

We want a clear winner - not a run away front runner.

I don’t fear competition - I welcome it completely.

I disagree - the primary battles are too important.

The debates every single day on FR are important.

We want a total process here - no walk aways.

Thompson’s biggest problem is, he doesn’t compare well with any of the Democrats in a head to head run-off.

The only Republican candidate who can beat any of them is Giuliani.

Way too early to make those judgments.

Agreed. I think she’s more likely going to tab Richardson as her running mate.

Thanks for the clarification although it doesn’t make me feel much better about him at this point. That could change as time goes by.

I’m not happy with a lot of what’s been going on...but I want to know just which candidate you think has been assigned to FR? Hunter? Thompson? Paul?

I hear you - you know what. Do this. Walk away from it all for 1 week - no TV news - no FR - nothing. You will be amazed at how you feel 1 week later. Very little will have changed - and you will feel new life.

You can’t win a war by pushing people out of your army or by making fewer people interested in you cause. The record and new members roster speaks for itself.
