36 California schools under lockdown (Thank you NBC)
MSNBC ^ | 4/19/07 | me

Authorities put all 36 schools in 12 Northern California school districts under lockdown Thursday as police searched for a man who claimed he was planning an armed attack that would “make Virginia Tech look mild.”

Sutter County sheriff’s officers were looking for Jeffery Thomas Carney, 28, a transient. Undersheriff J. Paul Parker told MSNBC-TV that Carney telephoned his pastor and and family members Wednesday night to say he had an automatic weapon, improvised explosive devices and poison.

Sheriff’s officials said Carney made no specific threat to any particular place. But because of the reference to the massacre of 32 students and professors Monday at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, principals at all 36 of the schools in the county’s 12 school districts shut down their campuses and locked students in for safety, Assistant Superintendent Linda Protine said.

I seriously doubt that the video is what caused this guy to act. It’s not like he was fine until yesterday evening right after he watched the 6 o’clock news.

Rush took NBC, it’s cable network PMSNBC and the Drive-by media to task today. I have never heard him so angry and upset. NBC is to blame for the copycat BS.

Looks like he’s been in trouble before. I would take him seriously. Better to be safe.

maybe this is a good thing - people are more aware. tragedy generally makes people stronger.

students hardly do any work at school anymore anyways, maybe it's not such a bad thing to lock down schools regardless. I'd rather them lock down schools than our weapons.

By a good thing, I mean the lockdown not the shootings and death...

Hopefully there is a teacher or principal packing. If my kids are going into lockdown though, they are coming home.

"If I was in charge of a network, I’d tell the news division they can only run photos like Cho’s if they had a caption like “Yes: the shooter had a small penis”, “probable virgin” or “loser” plastered over them. THAT might help discourage copycats."

I would imagine if the media just reported the facts for what they are, they would speak for themselves, and an objective report would make him out for the loser he was. The problem is selective editing and sensationalism have the reverse effect of lionizing the killer and even imbuing him with the aura of victimhood that other losers can sympathize with.

-—I suspect we can pretty well write off students learning anything the rest of the school year nation-wide—

I lived in North Hollywood and went to Bellarmine-Jefferson High School in the early 60’s. I think that school is still there. We used to play sports at Burbank high since we didn’t have a field. We’ve since moved to Boise, Idaho.

for many years it was our custom to pour clothes washing soap into the fountain of the burbank city hall. Well we did it twice... so wasn’t much of a custom. anyways, have a great day.

Parker said Carney was an alleged methamphetamine user and “was exhibiting symptoms of methamphetamine psychosis.”

Nothing to worry about. I have been told over and over on this board that drugs only hurt the user himself. < /s >

Was NBC the only network to broadcast the pictures and video?

Expect to see a ton of scares and a ton of false alarms in the next few weeks. Idiots will be trying to take advantage of this to scare people and authorities will be on a hair trigger.

I agree. They should be publically ridiculed.

“The VTech police didnt release that stuff...NBC did.”

Sorry, I’m talking about the all blame-the-VTech police for not reacting fast enough hooey.

To rephrase: you seem to be blaming NBC for these new threats. I don’t thing that NBC is to blame for these new threats, anymore than the VTech police are to blame for the shooting spree.

In both circumstances, I blame the crazy person, and only the crazy person, who either shot people or made the threats.

"I seriously doubt that the video is what caused this guy to act. It’s not like he was fine until yesterday evening right after he watched the 6 o’clock news."

John Douglas, founder of the FBI's profiling unit, has articulated the importance of "stressors" as principle elements of serial criminal behavior by psychopaths. Stressors, which serve to trigger the criminal behavior, can be very obscure and unpredictable for different individuals, but my point is this guy or any number of others may have had deeply rooted problems for years or decades, but just seeing another nut job get his 15 minutes could very well be enough to prompt them to act out their fantasies.

I don’t disagree with you but I think there is and has been so much publicity of this event that the video (and I don’t think it needed to be shown) is not necessarily what pushed him over the edge. In some ways, if this guy was going to snap, I’d rather he snap now while everyone is watching for it then in a month or a year when the guard is back down. Having said that...who knows what goes on with these whack-jobs. He’s also a meth-head.

I am sure that you are correct. However, the coverage does have potentially terrible consequences. This Cho idiot admits being influenced by the Columbine losers. Were the coverage of that event less extensive, at least that aggravating factor would have been removed.

pour clothes washing soap into the fountain of the burbank city hall.

If kids did that today the entire city’s school system would have to have a week of ‘training in understanding’, the perpetrators (that means you) would be in Juvenile Hall and on your way to ‘Rehab’ and you would have a ‘record’ that would follow you for the rest of your life. The world has gone completely mad IMO.

The first thing my husband said when he heard about the killings at V-Tech was,

“The bar has just been raised for mass murder body counts at schools all across America.”
