BLACKSBURG, Va. - The gunman blamed for the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history had previously been accused of stalking two female students at Virginia Tech and had been taken to a mental health facility in 2005 after an acquaintance worried he might be suicidal, police said Wednesday.

Warning signs SCREAMED in the faces at this school.
And nothing meaningful was done.
The guy should have been expelled and legal actions taken.
No, they coddled him instead.
Didn’t see this one coming!
I read another article that said the University tried to do something, but its hands were tied legally. Hopefully something will come out of this tragedy and it will be easier for institutions and companies to address this problem.
“No, they coddled him instead.”
rewarded him with a 4.0 GPA.
Exactly what DOES it take to expell a student?
Madness. Utter madness.
Nikki Giovanni is a VERY famous politically correct poet with connections all over the place. Probably the best known person on campus. This is the first I have heard her name mentioned as one of his writing teachers. I can't IMAGINE why the administration didn't pick up on this and expel this nut case.
I don’t think the school can be blamed in a significant manner. The problem is with the Warren Court closing down the mental health institutions for anyone except those presenting a clear threat to themselves or others.
If he had been at the University I went to back when I Was in College he would have been kicked out after the stalking and harassing of female students happend.
Which nutcase are you referring to, the shooter or Nikki?
I saw on tv that it got so bad with him that he wasn’t welcome in one of his classes and he had to have a tutor who was also very afraid of him.
Since when is going to college a “RIGHT”???? What about the rights of all the students who do the right thing and have to be around wackos and criminals. Anything for the tuition - grade inflation, tutors, coddling, etc.etc.etc.
Stalking...a restraining order would have denied him the ability to buy a gun.
Arson...a felony charge would have denied him the ability to buy a gun.
Then, of course, there is the failure of the psych system to formally identify him as a violent person.
Don’t blame the Virginia gun laws when the failure to abort this nut case belongs to others.
If he had been at the college I attended, back when I was there, he would have had his ass kicked and would have voluntarily withdrawn.
Good grief - she looks just like that very weird “gender-bender” prof with the short cropped blonde curly hair and the long-sleeved shirt, man’s jacket and tie. Same person?
YEP - what YOU said......until someone HARMS Someone....you cannot do anything, say the laws.....that’s also why there are so many crazies on the streets....and I don’t think “threats” necessarily count....they actually have to do something. Plus, the Privacy issue - they couldn’t talk to his parents.....I’ve been in this situation with a relative - it’s hopeless....and a helpless feeling......and does a disservice to the person and the community.
Interesting. Adds context. Thanks for posting.
A private institution would have -- or should have -- been able to toss this loser out of school for any reason whatsoever.

Oh, it’s not that hard. I’m sure that if he had:
- described homosexuals using a word considered a slur,
- called a female basketball player a “nappy-headed ho,” or
- wrote an email quoting movie dialogue about skinning prostitutes (a protected class) as in the Duke lacrosse case,
then he would have been out on his ear in no time flat.

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.
