Gunman taken to mental health facility in 2005

It emerged today that at one stage students were so scared of his behaviour that only seven out of 70 turned up for class, forcing lecturers to give him one-to-one tuition.

One teacher even suggested today he was given A grades because he was so "intimidating and staff wanted to keep him happy".

Nikki Giovanni, who teaches poetry, said she threatened to resign if Cho was not taken out of her class. She said: "I think he liked the idea he was a scary guy. Some people like that. That is how they define themselves. Kids write about murder and suicide all the time. But there was something that made us all pay attention closely.

"Students absolutely would not come into class. They said, 'He is taking photographs of us. We don't know what he is doing. It is very strange'."

There is also something wrong with teachers with gives an A because of fear of a student. If the student threatens them, they can always file a police report, not give an A. IMHO this sounds like a self-serving statement to justify a grade in this situation.

How and what the heck did he get two guns onto a school that is gun free? If they are serious about this instead of lip service, they would be taking action to ensure that no guns are on school property. I don’t agree with this, but if you are going to have this rule than make sure that rules work. Search all luggage before they enter University, go through medal detectors everytime they arrive in school, have searches of rooms, smiffing dogs. Hey that is what you do in a no gun school...(That should be a reason not to make a school gun free, but the stupid “in chargers” are to stupid to realize it and then are not smart enough to keep the rules kept...

When the family tried to put this kid in the hospital the authorities stated no he must help himself. He refused to do so. The law stated he had to do something to someone before they would do anything...If we change the laws and hospitalize these poor souls who are sick by force they can get help. There were signs just like with this kid in VT, but they were bound by liberal let them walk around laws.

It's so sad. Truly sick people who can't help themselves are treated as if they have free will, but healthy people who actually do have the capacity to make choices ---- are often excused in their behaviors as helpless victims of their genes or the environment that "programmed" them.

Compulsory hospitalization isn't cruel or unfair, when it's the only way to save a life.

I'll call BS on that.  If  she can't produce a written record of it, I consider it drama-crap.

A greencard (resident alien) can be rescinded, can’t it?

But he was not an “out of country student”. He was a resident alien long before he went to college. He was not here on a “student visa”. And “student status” is not known to gun dealers or anyone else for that matter.

Getting mentally ill people committed and keeping them there costs money. It is much cheaper (imo) to simply get the 2nd Amendment to mean what it plainly says - no government can tell you (short of due process [i.e. a trial jury]) that you can’t bear arms.

It's as betsyross1776 said in post 32 here:

It is not that people do not want to help these people; they are not allowed. The law will not let them.

It's that simple.

Sounds like the Administration was holding their breaths and hoping he wouldn’t do this. Sounds like it wasn’t hard to figure out who it was, just how to CYA. If he were White he would have been gone a year ago or had the crap beat out of him.

Pray for W and Va Tech

It's ture. The department head verified it and stated that she,(the department head) was giving private tutoring to the Cho because of the professor's objections to him.gunman.

My speculation is that the poetry professor had such clout due to her national reputation as a famous poet that she could insist Cho be removed from her class. Other professors may have wanted him out but didn't have the political power to make a stink. Academia is very political.

WTF is wrong with this school?????

It's not just this school. It's every public college. This is what happens when you make the INSANE into a protected minority group whom the rest of us are expected to tolerate, no matter what they do or appear ready to do.

You hit the nail on the head.

For many schools it is all about money.

The more international students enrolled the more money paid to them by the students and certain governments.

I remember years ago that someone wanted to put curbs on foreign students and many universities had a complete meltdown.

One university in Oklahoma had a majority of it’s students enrolled from foreign countries.

Therefore, any law curbing foreign participation would have severely curtailed raises and new buildings for the school.

Would some lawyers weigh in here? I figured Tech was off the hook because of sovereign immunity. Yes? No?

IANAL, but I don't think so. My alma mater for my BS (Univ of Toledo, Ohio) was sued (and lost) for seven figures in the early 90's when an off-duty campus police officer raped and murdered a student on-campus. It was revealed that he had been disciplined for previous behavior with students, general complaints about stalking, etc. and his behavior was revealed to be well-known to almost the top of the university. Obviously a different situation because he was an employee of the university, but I don't think VT can shrug their way out of this.

IMO, Uni's are going to be at least somewhat dutibound to maintain a safe environment on campus, and if the evidence about this guy's behavior and the administration's limited response but full knowledge keeps building, they could stand to lose very, very big in court.

Interesting....I don’t consider her a credible person so I’m surprised she’s telling the truth.
