......draft deferments kept Giuliani, 62, out of Vietnam while he attended law school. He was granted a 2-A occupational deferment for his job as a law clerk in 1969 after his boss, the late Manhattan federal Judge Lloyd MacMahon, wrote a letter to the local draft board - a move criticized years later as rare and questionable. Law clerks were not on the 1968 list of critical jobs that qualified for occupational deferments.........

That was then. This is now.

Rooty's spokeswoman Katie Levinson told New York magazine Rooty was opposed to the war in Vietnam on "strategic and tactical" grounds.......

The thought of this slick dodger Rooty plotting to send even one American soldier into battle is nauseating.

Who cares? Practically every politician today is a draft dodger, republican or democrat(Cheney, Bush and Clinton all dodged the draft one way or another). If you look at the “War Heroes” crew, McCain and Murtha, they’re not exactly models of good legislators themselves.

All the blabbering about draft dodging is stupid.

So not only is Giuliani......

Pro-abortion

Pro-illegal immigration/Amnesty

Anti-2nd Amendment

Pro-homosexual agenda

.....but also a draft-dodging elitist puke.

Compare Giuliani’s evading the draft with Obama’s four years in the Marines, and Hillary Clinton’s three-year stint as a Liutanant in the Army.

Hold on here folks, I need more proof. This is a Dem attack. Check this:

Murray warns of crush on VA Iraq War Friday, 19 January 2007 ‘Surge’ in Iraq will affect returning soldiers’ health care, senator says Washington, The News Tribune, Jan. 12 - A White House plan to send additional U.S. troops to Iraq will only increase the burden on an already overstressed Department of Veterans Affairs, Sen. Patty Murray warned Thursday, saying soldiers returning from combat already face long delays in securing benefits and health care. “The president is asking for 21,000 additional troops,” said the Evergreen State Democrat, one of Capitol Hill’s sharpest critics of the administration’s veterans polices. “We need to know what the cost will be.” Murray joined a group of veterans at a news conference sponsored by a new coalition called Americans Against Escalation in Iraq. The coalition includes such groups as VoteVets.org, MoveOn.org Political Action and the Service Employees International Union.

Obviously Rudy is seen as a threat to the left which sponsored the revealing of this information. Whenever anyone is a threat to the left they look for something to roast the person on. If they don’t find anything they make it up. A compliant media grabs it and blows it all out of proportion.

The thought of this slick dodger Rooty plotting to send even one American soldier into battle is nauseating.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing about this thread and the twisted article on which it's based. I have reservations about Giuliani as well, but this is ridiculous.

Do me a favor, Liz, and link me to the FR posts in which you applauded attacks on Dick Cheney from the likes of John "Okinawa" Murtha, Frank Lautenberg, and Dick Meyer, CBS News.com Editorial Director, who penned this this savage 2004 editorial. If you didn't concur with such luminaries, I can't imagine why you wouldn't have; they're completely consistent with your stated position.

I will write to you what I have written to the leftists who like to throw around the word "chickenhawk"; if that's the way you feel about being led by someone who hasn't served, demand a constitutional amendment requiring service of anyone elected to national office. But you and I both know it could never happen because that would bar anti-military liberals from being elected, and they would never support an idea that would prevent flower-in-the-rifle peaceniks from representing places like Berkeley, Ithaca, Madison, etc.

Before the services became all-volunteer (over the objection of John Kerry), there were plenty of veterans who were incompetent once they reached the Oval Office, the most recent being (if you aren't counting W.) Navy Lieutenant James Earl Carter. So why don't you and the lefties that meet you in the middle on this topic just knock it off, and accept that being a soldier is not a prerequisite for being Commander-in-Chief?

There's plenty not to like about Giuliani other than this irrelevant horsehockey.

Barf.

Within ten years there won’t be anyone young enough to run for office who even lived through the times when we had a war and a draft.

Then I suppose we will be able to criticize the “non volunteers” who failed to sign up for military service. Male AND female.

“VoteVets.org, a left-leaning version of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth”

No, the SwiftBoat group told the truth; VoteVets lies.

But then, to a leftist, telling an unpleasant truth about a leftist is morally equivalent to telling a malicious lie about a non-leftist.

Draft-dodging is doing something illegal to escape service. Legal means, such as going into the Guard, are draft-dodging only in the fever-sewer that is the leftist mind.

Holy molly, are the rubybots out in force over him being a Draft Dodger or what.

The 'funny' thing is I'll wager these same Rooty Rooter who are defending and excusing his actions are the same ones who..

Yet Rooty, who actively evaded the draft, i.e.; DODGED, is perfectly okey-dokey. And in the next breath they say this DRAFT DODGER is the ONLY ONE who can "win the war on terror".

And the excuses, Jeez Louise, "well it's not like he burnt his draft card or spit on any soldiers".

It's so 'funny' it's sad.

The left is terrified that Rudy will get the Republican nomination.

Left-wing vets oppose Rudy! What a surprise.

Well, at least he didn’t go to Russia like Bubba did and bad mouth our country. Hitlery is no better than Bubba, in fact she is much worse.

If she gets into the WH, there will be a civil war.

Having read most of this thread, I think the driving force behind Rudy's deferment was his employer, the judiciary. They didn't want to lose a legal star, either for a few years or forever. Rudy as a lawyer was one in a million. It was better for the country that he stayed at work and they knew it. Rudy's subsequent career validates that decision.

About how many Presidents could you have said that at age 23?

He was for the war, before he was against it(”tactical grounds”)....before he walked away from it. You can’t make this stuff up.

And a few years later, after being an AUSA, this “draft dodger” is in the third highest ranking position in the Reagan Justice Dept. And later US Attorney. Did the Government- whose draft he “dodged”- not vet him?

Seems this “issue” that salivates those Rudylovians (Giuliani haters that manifest a mindless Pavlovian response to any mention of him) didn’t make a bit of difference to Ronald Reagan.

For those who don’t know, there is no more prestigious and sought after position for any law graduate then a Federal Judge clerkship. Every male clerk in that era, if physically subject to the draft, would have had a similar deferment. Clerks were vital, obviously, even if there relatively are so few of them for selective service to have recognized a special category.

The Rudylovians salivate so much one can’t tell where the simple normal saliva ends and the drooling foam begins.

Favorite Republican sport: Circular Firing Squad.

This super duper long primary season gives Republicans such a long time to totally ignore Reagan’s 11th Commandment, over and over, shooting at each other’s candidate.

That is not a good thing.

And let's not forget, that 2-A came AFTER being refused a deferment he had applied for after leaving Law School. IMO, the only reason he took the clerking job was to qulaify for one.
