Speaking about terrorism and the Iraq war last week, Giuliani boasted, "It is something I understand better than anyone else running for president." But it was draft deferments that kept Giuliani, 62, out of Vietnam while he attended law school. He was granted a 2-A occupational deferment for his job as a law clerk in 1969 after his boss, the late Manhattan federal Judge Lloyd MacMahon, wrote a letter to the local draft board - a move criticized years later as rare and questionable. Law clerks were not on the 1968 list of critical jobs that qualified for occupational deferments. Giuliani "has made it clear that if he had been called up, he would have served," Giuliani spokeswoman Katie Levinson told New York magazine. He was opposed to the war in Vietnam on "strategic and tactical" grounds," she added, although she wouldn't offer specifics.
"If Giuliani is the nominee, we're going to hammer him with ads, and it's going to be easy because the issue is simple: He's a draft dodger," Jon Soltz, an Iraq vet who served as a captain and runs VoteVets.org, a left-leaning version of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth .......a sense that a candidate can handle the role of commander-in-chief remains important to most Americans.

If he had been more astute politically and listened to people outside of his inner circle he'd still be leading democrats around by the nose. Most of Bush's failures were due to lack of understanding the true reality of the situation because his advisors(especially Rumsfeld) had axes to grind and didn't want reality to get in the way.

In my previous post I meant to say Duncan Hunter was a veteran not a Marine. He was Airborne and also a Ranger. Had to clear that up, his father and son are/were USMC.
Our disgraceful politicos just don't see it that way. It would do wonders for the elimination of our drug and crime problem, but the NCOs and officers would have to have a lot more authority than they now have.I think a lot of politicians would like to do this. But it would be political suicide. Too many selfish NIMBY's who don't want to make the sacrifices to make America a better place if it means their little trevor has to learn some self discipline. I think America will have to hit rock bottom before it can get better.

Draft-dodging is doing something illegal to escape service. Legal means, such as going into the Guard, are draft-dodging only in the fever-sewer that is the leftist mind.
I agree that he got some bad advice from several places.
But he never seemed to fight as hard as the Dems, even when he was clearly supported by the base.

But all of that can also be said to be the result of bad advice...or lack of his own clear stand.

FYI, Duncan Hunter was in the US Army and he enlisted. And he was an Airborne Ranger. That makes him what used to be called in 'the olden days' a 'three time volunteer' (very rare then).
And when Duncan was down at Ft Benning he likely double timed to a Jody something like this...

There were plenty of National Guard troops who served in Vietnam, so don’t post this $hit that going into the NG was the common way of rich kids to get out of Vietnam
