.... Rudy Giuliani carries a lot of baggage - but it's his draft-dodging past that may prove the biggest drag, prominent veterans tell New York magazine in tomorrow's issue. Speaking about terrorism and the Iraq war last week, Giuliani boasted, "It is something I understand better than anyone else running for president." But it was draft deferments that kept Giuliani, 62, out of Vietnam while he attended law school. He was granted a 2-A occupational deferment for his job as a law clerk in 1969 after his boss, the late Manhattan federal Judge Lloyd MacMahon, wrote a letter to the local draft board - a move criticized years later as rare and questionable. Law clerks were not on the 1968 list of critical jobs that qualified for occupational deferments. Giuliani "has made it clear that if he had been called up, he would have served," Giuliani spokeswoman Katie Levinson told New York magazine. He was opposed to the war in Vietnam on "strategic and tactical" grounds," she added, although she wouldn't offer specifics.
"If Giuliani is the nominee, we're going to hammer him with ads, and it's going to be easy because the issue is simple: He's a draft dodger," Jon Soltz, an Iraq vet who served as a captain and runs VoteVets.org, a left-leaning version of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth .......a sense that a candidate can handle the role of commander-in-chief remains important to most Americans.

Good one. Guess that would make my husband and me draft dodgers as well (never mind that he was up for the first year they ran the lottery - had a number well over 300 and thus wasn't drafted). I'm too young and female. Oh, and the better half just retired from almost 21 years of Army service, including two unaccompanied tours to Korea and 4 months in Kuwait.
I believe Bush served more active duty time than John Kerry.
Iraq, as far as oil, trade or any other substance is a non entity to this physical reality of multi thousand mile ocean routes and the US Navy.
He was for the war, before he was against it(”tactical grounds”)....before he walked away from it. You can’t make this stuff up.

Hey, he applied; they said yes. That’s all you have to do. If they made a special exception, or even if they made a mistake, so what? That’s on them.
I hear that many actually fled to Canada to avoid service as well. Many others faked illnesses, or put soap bars under their arms when they reported for inductions physicals, to give a false “high blood pressure” reading. Apparently, another method was to get a fake reason as a law clerk. Rudy avoided serving, but President Bush certainly served his country.
The crap Rooty's putting out about opposing the war on "strategic and tactical" grounds is a CYA fakeout.
Rooty made no such claim when he decided his legal career came first, and pulled strings to get out of going ....at the same time other young Americans without connections had to go fight.
The thought of Rooty ordering even one young American into war is nauseating.
A "brilliant" law student as Rudy supposedly was should KNOW basic facts----like who was or was not elegible for deferment.
Even moreso---a lawyer, and an officer of the court, is supposed to abide by US laws, rules and regulations.
A scofflaw like Rooty is the LAST person who should hold the levers of the US government.
And a few years later, after being an AUSA, this “draft dodger” is in the third highest ranking position in the Reagan Justice Dept. And later US Attorney. Did the Government- whose draft he “dodged”- not vet him?
Seems this “issue” that salivates those Rudylovians (Giuliani haters that manifest a mindless Pavlovian response to any mention of him) didn’t make a bit of difference to Ronald Reagan.
For those who don’t know, there is no more prestigious and sought after position for any law graduate then a Federal Judge clerkship. Every male clerk in that era, if physically subject to the draft, would have had a similar deferment. Clerks were vital, obviously, even if there relatively are so few of them for selective service to have recognized a special category.
The Rudylovians salivate so much one can’t tell where the simple normal saliva ends and the drooling foam begins.

You are assuming that “not on the list” means “not eligible.”
I very much doubt that. The highest principle of bureaucracy, the overarching truth that can always be relied upon, is that every rule has a waiver, if you can just get high enough in the chain of command.
Here, though, a waiver probably wasn’t even needed. The people who wrote the regulation and compiled the list would almost certainly have recognized that they couldn’t foresee every contingency. They would therefore not have ended their list with “and never, never, never any others,” but more likely with something like “and such other occupations or circumstances as may, in the judgement of a majority of the members of the board, consitute appropriate grounds for deferment.”
No, this deferment thing is another trumped-up demonrat BS attack. What disqualifies Rudy is his defunct moral compass. Dancing with homos, indeed!

If you're going to engage in mockery, at least be creative about it.
As it stands, apparently you let your moral standards be determined by the general electorate.
But going to flight school is a quantum jump from that picture you paint with an infinitely greater chance likelihood)of being called up for combat.

And today, just like in Viet Nam, people are joining the National Guard to avoid going to Iraq. Oops, there are a LOT of NG troops going to Iraq, just as a LOT of NG went to Viet Nam. But here some definitions of "draft dodger."
somebody avoiding military conscription: somebody who seeks to avoid being drafted for military service
someone who is drafted and illegally refuses to serve
Someone who avoids conscription.
The term "draft dodger" cannot be applied to someone who served in the military.
