Collects 2-1 margin of victory over nearest runner-up.
Republican Fred Thompson, the target of several "draft Fred" for the White House campaigns, easily won a presidential poll conducted by the American Family Association.
The Alabama native was sent to the Senate after winning a 1994 special election in Tennessee to fill the unexpired term of Democrat Al Gore and was re-elected in 1996. He chose in 2002 not to seek re-election and has appeared in several Hollywood productions since.
In the new AFA poll, he collected 24,872 votes for president in a compilation taken just hours before the poll closed at midnight yesterday.
The runner-up was former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, with 9,889 votes, while ex-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was third with 7,877.
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was fourth with 6,154; John McCain fifth with 5,090; Mike Huckabee sixth with 3,179; Sam Brownback seventh with 3,051; Tom Tancredo eighth with 2,060; and Ron Paul ninth with 1,884.
The leading Democrat in the poll was John Edwards, in 10th with 1,780 votes, and he was followed by fellow party members Barack Obama with 1,414 and Hillary Clinton with 1,108.

IF Rudy is indeed “way ahead” it is only due to the fact that he is actually IN the race. Mr. Thompson HAS YET DECLARED, but, who do I see on Rudy’s heels? oh wait, nope, OMG, is that Mr. Thompson, who has yet to declare, taking away Rudy’s 1st place? How can that be? Mr. Thompson hasn’t even SPENT ONE RED CENT on his campaign, that hasn’t even happened yet! What could it be? Gasp.....
How about Thompson/Bush (i.e., Jeb)? It’s been a while since we had a Bush in the VP slot. This ticket would pretty well lock up Florida.
Not this time around... and his illegals-stance is no better than GW's. Next to Islamism, the illegal-alien situation is the biggest menace we face. I respect both of them... but on this issue, they're abysmal.
Since 1980, save one election, there has been a 'Bush' on the party's ticket. I like Jeb, but we need to get away from potential dynasties in the party. Being an Ohioan who is recovering from the Boob Taft administration, I am very sensitive to that.
Not amoung the majority of blacks I don't think. Blacks are too tied to the Marxist's dimocrat party. They are practically joined at birth. Only those blacks who want to make something of themselves, to get out of the ghetto mentality with the mentality that I can do it myself without the government, will vote for Watts. You remember how the Marxist's used to blast J.C. as an Uncle Tom.
I like Duncan Hunter but I would have no problem supporting Thompson.
Fred will talk about the LIMITS of government,,,,,while JulieAnnie talks about the POWERS of government.
Fred is the MAN!!
We Want Fred!!
If you already have a comparison drawn up, I would love to see it. I am all for J.C. Watts. Don’t do any extra work, though. :)
Mr. “Our immigration laws are too tough”?
Never.

Actually, Rudy’s numbers are dropping as more and more conservatives begin to learn how liberal he is.

And wrote: “The thing is, the American people know Rudy.”
The truth is that they don’t. A recent poll (the scientific kind), conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates, shows that many voters remain unaware of Rudy’s liberal stand on key issues. Only 34 percent of GOP voters were aware Giuliani has a pro-choice stance on abortion rights - a position opposed by the conservative activists that dominate the party. Just 17 percent polled knew that Giuliani backed gun control measures, which are strongly opposed by the party, and only 16 percent were aware that Giuliani opposes a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

And wrote: “Hes branded. Fred isnt, at leat not in the same way.”
Well, you got one right! Rudy’s branded all right, and the brand is “liberal.” And you’re right that Fred isn’t liberal in the same way that Giuliani is - Fred’s brand is “conservative.”

“Too bad, so sad. The facts are still the fatcs (sic).”
Yes, too bad for Rudy supporters. The facts all add up to this: Rudy is too liberal to win the Republican nomination.

And wrote: “Trust me on this one!”
Um, nothing personal, but I’d rather trust the facts. Rudy is too liberal on abortion, guns, gays and immigration for most Republicans and most Americans. New York values just don’t play very well out here in flyover country.
I don't think it was meant to be. It shows that Thompson can carry the "values voters" in a big way. I think that there was some doubt about that with some regarding the Dobson comment, Howard Baker, etc.
You’re a stupid creep.
Steele went on Jon Stewart blaming Bush and Rumsfeld for his Senate loss.
How do you think the fact that Watts has at least two illegitimate children with different women go over with the electorate?
papasmurf wrote: “I would be happy [to] provide comparisons between Mr. Steele and former Rep. Watts. I think you would agree, while Mr. Steele is a fine man, J.C. is a true conservative and more experienced than is Mr. Steele.”
I agree that J.C. is a bit more conservative and has more experience than Michael Steele. While former Rep. Watts would be my first choice for Fred’s running mate, I would ethusiastically support either of these two good men and talented politicians.
I dunno...with the Dems getting the felon vote now, will we ever get Florida?
Actually, Oztrich Boy brings up an interesting point. What do you think her effect will be (vote-wise), should she convince Sen. Thompson to run?
