US Democrats will not seek to cut funding for US troops in Iraq but will insist on political progress in the war-torn country as a condition, a senator said today.
"We're not going to cut off funding for the troops," the Democratic chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Carl Levin, told US network ABC, commenting on the Democrats' bid to timetable the forces' withdrawal.
President George W. Bush has vowed to veto the two versions of the Democrats' bill to withdraw the troops next year - one from the Senate and one from the House of Representatives - raising the question of how they would proceed with their drive to wind up the bloody war.
"What we should do, and we're going to do, is continue to press this president to put some pressure on the Iraqi leaders to reach a political settlement," Senator Levin said.
Lawmakers passed a Democrat-sponsored proposal that would make crucial funding for the Iraq war conditional on pulling out the troops. Mr Bush dismissed the Democrats' efforts to set a date as "a political statement".
Yesterday, Mr Bush urged the Democrats to pass their bill to him as soon as possible so he could veto it and Congress could get to work on drafting an alternative to fund the troops.

Right. They won’t cut off funding, they’ll just repeatedly demoralize them by telling everyone that nothing’s been accomplished over there and all the troops are criminals who shoot innocent people. Between the MurthaPelosiDems and the Media it’s a toss up of who I loathe more.

Perhaps they should "insist" that their buddies in the media report things more accurately.
This is just more Dem posturing.
I will believe it when I see it.
But these guys in congress are getting a lot, repeat, a lot of heat from citizens. Remember, their majority was at the most only 50 to 49% margin of victory. So it won’t take much to swing back to the GOP if they mess up.
Elections do not guarantee anyone a permanent, life long job in government.

SChumer was on FOX with this piece of lying DNC propaganda - must have been seeing alarming signs of Americans not liking the DEMS posturing against the President or the troops, so they’re flat out LYING to avoid looking like the scum lying communists that they really are...Iguanas change their colors to defend themselves, I think I’ll yell out “IGUANA” everytime I see a democrat on the tube spouting their lies not to defund the troops!
The Rats cannot be trusted however in this instance, I think the Dems are playing the correct roll: turning up the heat on a president who has been slothful in changing a weak strategy and demanding the Iraqi’s get off their asses and get with it.
