A Russian researcher, delving anew into once-secret Soviet files from the Cold War, says she has found no evidence that Alger Hiss spied or that Soviet intelligence had any particular interest in him.
In a speech to be delivered at a New York University symposium Thursday, Svetlana A. Chervonnaya says neither Hiss' name nor his alleged spy moniker, Ales, appears in any of dozens of documents from Soviet archives that she has reviewed since the early 1990s.
A copy of the speech was made available to The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Calling her efforts "proving the negative," Chervonnaya says "a thorough combing of all the said archives combined has not produced a shred of evidence that Alger Hiss had ever been a member of the (American) Communist Party and was engaged in any behind-the-scenes interactions with the Soviets."

"Her stating of the negative in all this is so strong that it almost becomes a positive," he said.
I guess it doesn't take much to be a writer in New York, if your father was a notorius traitor.
Either Mr. Pyle is unfamilar with the facts, or is being disingenuous. I'm going with "B".
Then why the lies? And what the heck was he doing in that pumpkin patch?
Didn’t the Venona transcripts nail this guy?
It seems the liberals/Democrats/commie sympathizers will never give this one up. Just keep blaming it on anti-communist witch-hunts... yeah, that’s the ticket!
I thought they did and I guess these Communists never give up trying to write history their way.
Ann Coulter got them with “Treason” and they must strike back.
Venona intercepts do specifically refer to Ales (Hiss). So, yes there are records of the Soviets referencing Ales.

Hey, snap!
In 1976, Alger Hiss came to my university (Ohio U.) to give a lecture. Out of curiosity, I went to listen. Hiss spoke mainly about politics and abuse of power, which were hot topics in those post-Watergate years. The only time Hiss spoke of his own case was to say this or that evidence was tainted or gathered illegally against him. He never came out and said “I was framed, I was innocent,” instead reverting to lawyer-speak to defend himself. I walked away from that lecture that evening convinced that Hiss was guilty as hell.
" ...and that another Venona document tends to exonerate rather than to implicate Hiss. Venona errors regarding Hiss raise questions about the accuracy and reliability of the entire Venona process and its products."
Venona and Alger Hiss by John Lowenthal
Intelligence and National Security, Volume 15, Number 3 (Autumn 2000), pages 98-130.
Gordievsky nailed Hiss as ALES six years before Venona became public. Lowenthal apparently didn’t do his homework.
I find absolutely no evidence that we visited the moon during my evaluation of my stamp collection. This PROVES it didn’t happen!
I am wondering did she find any evidence of any "behind-the-scenes interactions with the Soviets" by anybody living on the US soil at the time.
There’s at least as much proof of Alger Hiss’ treason as there is for humans causing Global Warming.
We probably didn’t visit the moon during your evaluation of your stamp collection. I know I’ve never been there.
Is this a prothonotary warbler — the bird that Hiss saw along the Potomac?
