Yemeni killed in Koran abuse protest (Is this for real???)
Herald Sun ^ | 26 March 2007

A YEMENI was killed today in clashes with police as workers at a gas export terminal in southern Yemen protested at a French engineer's alleged desecration of the Koran, a local official said.

"One worker was killed and others were arrested following clashes with police who intervened" to contain the protest at the terminal being built by the French company Total in Balhaf port, he said, requesting anonymity.

"After a fight between a French engineer and another who is Yemeni, the Frenchman - to enrage the Yemeni - threw a Koran on the floor in an offensive way," the official said of the alleged incident.

Witnesses said four workers were also wounded.

More than 400 workers protested when they found out about the incident, burning about 10 cars and a helicopter belonging to the French company, and wrecking offices used by French staff, he said.

Total is building a 320km pipeline to transport gas from Marib, east of Sanaa, to Balhaf, on the Gulf of Aden, where the Yemen LNG terminal is being built.

Before anyone starts praising the French, read this from the article:

"On Friday, a French court acquitted Philippe Val, editor of the satirical weekly, Charlie Hebdo, on charges of offending Muslims by publishing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed last year.

The Paris court threw out a suit brought by two Muslim organisations against editor Philippe Val for reprinting the cartoons which had first appeared in a Danish newspaper sparking angry protests by Muslims worldwide.

In December, the editor of Yemeni newspaper Al-Hurriya and one of his journalists were given four-month suspended sentences for publishing the offensive cartoons."

So France, which bills itself as a modern democracy, shows the same fascist disregard for freedom of speech as a Third World Islamist dictatorship.

I do give credit where credit is due (I thought it was funny when French agents sank the Greenpeace boat), but other than that incident, the last time the French showed balls was during the time of Napoleon.

Man Sentenced to Prison for Gouging out Wife’s Eyes

A French court sentenced Mohamed Hadfi to 30 years in prison for blinding his 23-year-old wife Samira Bari by gouging out her eyes. The attack stemmed from a heated argument after she refused to have sex with him and demanded a divorce.

Hadfi’s lawyer, Jean-Pierre Cabanes, unsuccessfully pled “extenuating circumstances.” “This is the result of a marriage that was arranged, not chosen,” Cabanes said. “There are cultural differences. My client is from Morocco, where, I understand, such behaviors are customary.”

Cabanes also begged the jury for leniency, pointing to his client’s “mental illness.” “Hadfi is, after all, a Muslim,” Cabanes pointed out. “That in itself could be considered evidence of mental illness.”

In related news, a German judge dismissed a woman’s plea for an expedited divorce from her abusive husband on the grounds that the couple is Muslim. “The Koran permits a husband to discipline his wife,” the court order read. “Moderate beatings and, sometimes death, may be meted out to disobedient females. We cannot blindly impose Western standards on people of another culture.”

I need to chip some slash this week; maybe I can run a Koran through the chipper, and send the nice Frenchman a replacement for the one he dropped.

If the Frenchman is sent home, the courts there would nail him before the "youths" could torch his car!

I'd stand proud to support a French offensive in the War on Terror, G-d knows their nation (really just a European Union state) needs it. But will they? I doubt it.

Nomination for best response of all time to that sentiment:

"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."

I heard from someone on site there and it took the military 3-4 hours to get there. Scary for a while.
