Bill to Ban Regular Light Bulbs Introduced in [U.S.] House

(CNSNews.com) - A Democratic lawmaker has introduced a bill that would ban the sale of traditional incandescent light bulbs - which are less energy-efficient, prompting claims that they contribute to "global warming" - one day after a colleague told a press conference that legislating a ban would be a "last choice."

As Cybercast News Service reported last week, Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) and Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) held a news conference Wednesday calling for more efficient lighting options, and Manzullo said "the last thing we want to do is force legislation down people's throats."

One day later, Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) introduced legislation that would set target dates for certain types of light bulbs to be prohibited for sale in the United States.

Harman calls the bill "an important first step toward making every household, business and public building in America more energy-efficient."

"This legislation, while a small step, could have an enormous impact," she said in a posting on the liberal Huffington Post blog. "And hopefully, it can help transform America into an energy-efficient and energy-independent nation."

An average traditional incandescent bulb based on a filament emits 12-15 lumens per watt (a measurement of the bulb's lighting output.) Harman's bill would require all bulbs to produce 60 lumens-per-watt by January 2012; 90 lumens-per-watt by January 2016; and 120 lumens-per-watt by January 2020.

Yes. You can get them in shapes that approximate real light bulbs.

However, this legislation is stupid. Wait a couple of years, and the LED light bulbs will be ready and cheap enough to sweep the country. They have better light characteristics, are cheaper to manufacture in bulk, have fewer harmful chemicals, and use less electricity than the flourescents.

But if we force people to switch to floresents now, there will be no market for the new bulbs.

The free market is going to solve our energy problems, if the government can be kept out of the way long enough.

LOL, here comes those San Fransicko values!

Look for this scumbag Harman - - or some other Kalifornia whackjob - - to next introduce legislation that would require "feng shui" in US Building Standards Codes in order to "encourage the correct design of living spaces so people can experience a 'positive energy environment'."

You can get CF bulbs for use in enclosed fixtures now.

The big problems with CF bulbs is that they don't put out as much light as an equivalent incandescent and that they don't last as long as advertised.

I've got about 25 CFs installed at the moment; probably about the same number of incandescent, and about a half dozen or so halogen.

Exactly right!

Are they going to outlaw dimmer switches as well?

They have a small measure of mercury which is a major pollutant and requires HAZ MAT disposal. You can’t throw them in the Garbage for the local landfill. You must turn them into a recycling center. Most recycling centers are not set up to deal with hazardous recycling.

But Manzullo is (R-Ill.). If you are a (D-CA), or pretty much a (D-Anywhere), the first thing that you want to do is to force legislation down people's throats. In fact, you see that as your mission in life...

What's wrong with allowing the "Law of Supply and Demand" dictate what kind of lighting we use?
There are many places that fluorescent won't work.
Has anyone seen a dimmer for fluorescents?
Has anyone tried a fluorescent to replace the light in the oven?
Has anyone tried a fluorescent bulb in the freezer?

These are real world problems, but then the socialists & liberals don't bother with the real world.

I think it's 36 million coupons, not 36,000. Still not enough for everybody, of course.

"The market itself will bring about the eventual demise of incandescent light bulbs."

Most in DC do not trust or understand free markets

I've been doing some research on CFL and LED lighting for germinating seedlings for my vegetable garden, I live in zone 6b horticulturally and have to start most of my plants indoors.

I noticed how a Spathphyllum/peace lily and some other plants were responding to a CFL bulb on a table in my kitchen last year, the supplemental lighting really helped them thrive...

Further research showed that the most viewed thread of all time at cannabis.com is the CFL lighting thread, the indoor gardeners love them...lol!

Soooo- all of us who never bought a HD tv and really cannot afford to do so, are going to be without communication via our TV.

Horrors! What will welfare recipients do all day?

(My money is on 'riot')...

LED bulbs are supposed to be the future anyway, so CFLs may actually be short-lived.

I've never noticed a problem with the brightness. The only place in my house I use a 100 watt bulb is in my shop, snd I haven't had a problem with the 100W equivalent CFL. I've never actually bothered to compare.

Yes, but not until the lastest/greatest will fit under lamp shades and give a more flattering light.

And that's the way it should be.

I like the LED types. Fluorescents do weird things with colors.

It takes one Democrat to change your light bulbs. He stands there with the proverbial gun at your head while you bear the work and expense.
