THANK YOU! Thanks to all contributors / linkers. Education / survival BUMP!
Thanks, Ian. I was thinking about you the other evening and wondering how your Arabic studies were going or if you decided to pursue a different course now.
Thank you!
Thanx, Ian. This is the best ongoing thread in all Freep-land.
Thanks much, Ian!
Are you able to keep up with all the wicked weather?
Funny responses on that thread - as expected.
(I can't imagine knowing that you've eaten at one of those restaurants. shudder)
I have not been studying Arabic for the last 18 mo. or so. I do plan on going back to it shortly. I stopped in to check out some free classes offered by someone at George Washington University a few weeks ago, but it was too much of a step back for me. I will probably start taking classes at Georgetown next semester.
Overall, I seem to be on the same general course. I guess I have been focusing more on Foreign Policy as a whole rather than confining myself to counter-terrorism studies. Of course, I'm still mostly interested in the Middle East/South Asia.
I did get to meet with Laura Mansfield a few weeks back when she was in the area (hope it's ok to share that!). It was a good reminder that I should get back into Arabic. ;-)

Sudan, Iran vow to defeat 'enemies of Islam'
And not through an inner spiritual struggle. By Mohammed Ali Saeed for AFP:
KHARTOUM (AFP) - Iran and Sudan's presidents, whose hardline regimes are under intense international scrutiny, struck a defiant pose on Thursday in the face of Western pressure vowing to defeat the "enemies of Islam."
"We are determined to foil the conspiracies aimed at planting the seeds of discord among Muslims," Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir said at a press conference with his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Wrapping up a two-day visit to Khartoum, the Iranian leader echoed Beshir's words: "We proclaim our desire to solve the Muslim world's woes... and rise up against attempts to sow discord in its midst."
Beshir lent his full support to Iran's nuclear programme, which the West fears Tehran wants to use for military purposes, while Ahmadinejad lashed out at the "enemies of Islam" and accused the West of seeking to destabilise Sudan.
In a joint statement, they drew "the world's attention to Israel's possession of nuclear weapons" and called for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction.
During a meeting with Sudanese clerics Wednesday, Ahmadinejad launched into one of his trademark diatribes against the Jewish state.
"Zionists are the true incarnation of Satan," he was quoted as saying by Iran's official news agency.
"The Zionist regime was created by the British, brought up by the Americans and commits crimes in the region with their support," he said.
The two leaders discussed the latest developments in Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories while their delegations agreed to enhance trade ties and other fields of cooperation, including culture.
Iran's ambassador to Khartoum, Reza Amiri, said before Ahmadinejad's trip that he hoped business partnerships could help increase the volume of two-way trade to 70 million dollars a year from 43 million dollars now.
However, an issue that has also been at the heart of Iran-Sudan ties is military cooperation, with Sudanese Defence Minister Abdel Rahim Mohammed Hussein having visited Iran three times over the past year.
According to press reports, Sudan has shown interest in acquiring Iranian missiles and unmanned aircraft.

Coalition Forces Kill Terrorists, Find Weapons; Insurgents Kill 4 Iraqis
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, March 2, 2007 Over the past two days in Iraq, coalition forces killed eight terrorists and found a car bomb and weapons cache, Iraqi forces detained five suspects, and insurgents killed four civilians with mortar fire.
Coalition forces killed eight terrorists yesterday during a raid targeting al Qaeda in Iraq operating in the Salman Pak region. Intelligence reports indicate a significant number of individuals involved with the al Qaeda terrorist network currently operate in the area, officials said. Activities in this area have been linked to a roadside-bomb and car-bomb network. Terrorists in the area are also believed to be involved in smuggling weapons and facilitating foreign fighters.
During the raid, in which coalition forces were repeatedly confronted by small-arms and mortar fire, coalition forces identified three armed terrorists moving toward them with hostile intent. Ground forces engaged the enemy, killing the three terrorists. Twenty minutes later, ground forces were again confronted by eight terrorists, who began firing upon them. Ground forces returned fire, killing four terrorists. The other four fled the area.
Ground forces also saw armed terrorists in a vehicle accessing a weapons cache and removing small arms. Coalition forces engaged, killing one terrorist. Two terrorists were wounded and fled. Coalition forces recovered several sniper rifles, AK-47s and rocket-propelled launchers from one of the engagement sites.
"Successful coalition operations continue to disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations, restricting freedom of movement and reducing the organization's manpower pool," said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman.
In Baghdad, special Iraqi army forces with coalition advisors yesterday detained five suspects during operations targeting an improvised explosive device builder. During the operations, coalition forces killed a suspected terrorist after observing him moving between rooftops with an assault rifle, aiming it at Iraqi and coalition forces. Coalition forces and Iraqi army medics rendered immediate aid to the gunman to help stabilize him for movement to a hospital, but he died before being transported.
Elsewhere, insurgents used mortar fire to kill four Iraqi civilians and wound 10 others south of Baghdad yesterday. A building was also damaged in the attack in Iskandariyah.
In another operation, soldiers of Task Force Iron Claw, from 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), found a car bomb along a road outside Yusufiyah yesterday. The burned-out vehicle was found near a settlement known to coalition forces as Janabi Village. The soldiers saw wires leading out of the trunk of the vehicle and called for an explosive ordnance disposal team to investigate further. Explosive ordnance personnel destroyed the vehicle with a controlled detonation.
Separately, Multinational Division Baghdad troops found and seized a massive weapons cache along one of Baghdads main highways Feb. 28. Soldiers from Company A, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment Golden Dragons, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), discovered the cache while conducting a combat patrol along Mulla Fayad Highway, west of Yusufiyah. The cache consisted of two Sanger missiles with launch tubes, many different types of ammunition, grenades and homemade explosives.

Man Gets 5 Years in Prison for New York Subway Bomb Plot
FoxNews.com ^ | March 02, 2007 | AP
Posted on 03/02/2007 4:35:45 PM PST by RDTF
NEW YORK A man was sentenced to five years in prison on Friday for conspiring to blow up a busy Manhattan subway station.
James Elshafay, had pleaded guilty and testified against the mastermind of the plot, Shahawar Matin Siraj, at a trial last year in federal court in Brooklyn.
Elshafay, the son of an Egyptian father and Irish mother, testified that after meeting Siraj at an Islamic bookstore, they hatched an initial scheme later abandoned to blow up the four bridges connecting Staten Island to Brooklyn and New Jersey. He also told jurors at Siraj's trial that he was taking medication for depression and schizophrenia.
Siraj and Elshafay were caught with crude diagrams of the Herald Square subway station on Aug. 27, 2004, the eve of the Republican National Convention. Prosecutors said the men wanted to avenge the abuses of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison.
At the time of the arrests, authorities said that the men never obtained explosives and had not been linked to known terrorist groups.
Siraj was sentenced last year to 30 years in prison.
