BROOKVILLE, Pa. -- Jefferson County's jail warden got a little tired of inmates throwing food despite repeated warnings not to, so he fought back.
Warden David Riley recently started feeding misbehaving inmates a food loaf, made up of all the offerings at mealtime mixed together and formed into a loaf.
"We microwave the food loaf before it is served," Mr. Riley said. "It's really not that bad."
Jails across the country commonly serve food loaf as punishment for bad behavior. Some jails don't use the daily meal offerings, but instead use a recipe that includes ingredients like wheat bread, beans, other vegetables and cheeses in order to make sure the inmate's diet meets daily nutritional guidelines.
Five days after offering the concoction, Mr. Riley said all food throwing stopped at his jail.
"I had one inmate tell me, 'Well warden, you broke me,' " Riley recalls. "It has had the desired effect."

Hah, my wife has been making this stuff for years...
What horror... those poor inmates should be getting filet mignon, crisp green beans and roasted baby taters. Shame on us for treating them so awful.

Mmmmmmmmm......food loaf.
Don't let your food loaf.
You mean like the Gitmo inmates?
Serving "Food Loaf" for dinner would make it extraordinarly dificult to choose an appropriate wine.
Uh, can we persuade Rachel Ray to give us this recipe and show us how it's cooked in thirty minutes? ;0)
Or maybe they should be taking the Sheriff Joe Arpaio approach to inmate management...
Just RECYCLING THE FOOD CRIMINALS WON'T EAT
... the first time...
Buy that warden a steak dinner!
I am sure that made them feel good and didn't even hurt thr poor widdle cwiminals feeeelings.
How about this. The warden says "Don't throw food"
If they do it anyway, they don't get anymore food.
When they do it again, they are beaten with batons to bloody pulp and stuck in isolation for a month.
Even better if they picked the food off the floor that was thrown by the inmates and made food loaf. No waste.
Nutriloaf Recipe
The state Department of Corrections plans to serve this loaf as punishment for inmates who misbehave:
6 slices whole wheat bread, finely chopped
4 ounces non-dairy cheese, finely grated
4 ounces raw carrots, finely grated
12 ounces canned spinach, drained
4 ounces seedless raisins
2 cups Great Northern beans, cooked and drained
4 tablespoons vegetable oil
6 ounces tomato paste
8 ounces powdered nonfat or skim milk
6 ounces potato flakes
Make sure all wet items are drained. Mix all ingredients in a bowl, either by kneading with hands (wearing plastic gloves) or with a spoon. The mixture should be stiff and just moist enough to spread. Form three loaves in glazed bread pans. Place pans in oven in a pan containing water to keep bottom of loaf from burning. Bake at 325 degrees for about 45 minutes, until each loaf reaches an internal temperature of 155 degrees. Makes three loaves, or three meals, each containing 940 calories.

Thank God. These idiots don't even deserve food when they disrespect the prison guards.
Mmmmmm...Nutriloaf, just like mom used to make...only she'd sprinkle a little Copenhagen on top, just for flavor.
Zesty and minty!!
Grape's outta season.
Inflation even hits the winos, I guess.
