CompUSA to close more than half their stores; 126 U.S. locations to close within 90 days

Excerpt -

As part of its plan to realign the organization, CompUSA has announced a comprehensive strategy to improve the company's financial status. The realignment includes a cash infusion, store closures, major expense reductions and a corporate restructuring.

As part of CompUSA's realignment strategy, the company will receive a $440 million cash capital infusion. The financial boost will be designated to improve the company's balance sheet.

"Based on changing conditions in the consumer retail electronics market, the company identified the need to close and sell stores with low performance or non strategic, old store layouts and locations faced with market saturation. The process began last week with the closing of four CompUSA stores and over the next 60-90 days, the company will close a total of 126 stores in the United States to focus on initiatives that enhance its top performing locations," said Roman Ross, chief executive officer, CompUSA, in the press release.

CompUSA says these moves will allow the company to focus its efforts and ensure a strong presence in its 103 stores in 39 states and Puerto Rico.

Isn't it odd that no retail computer store chain has really succeeded, Computerland failed, Compuadd failed, Gateway Stores failed, very few local shops last very long.

Also if your computer fails is there any place you could take it that really knows what they are doing and is half way reasonable in price.

(BTW I like Newegg also, there customer review section is a gold mine of information)

and waiting a week+ versus an online store.

I just bought some stuff from Newegg (cdrs, dvds, etc), almost all of it was free 3-day shipping.

I don't have a CompUSA near me, but it was mostly the type of stuff I'd normally grab at Staples/Best Buy/Costco/etc.

LOL

I lasted about 3 weeks at CUSA.

I thought it was funny that folks would come in and ask for a ton of technical advice for prodcuts purchased elsewhere. And they got pisssed when I told them to bring it in for the work, that was why the store was there.

I left when it came out the total store sales would have to include no less than 20% from the tech shop. A shop at the time that was lucky to add 2% in any given month. Oh and that they treat employees like theves (corse I am an old dude, so it might just be me).

Folks are right, the sales drones are a fright.

"at least in LA"

This was in MS. I'm just saying, very little of that installation time requires user intervention which mainly consists of clicking "Next". $100 just seemed high for that, IMO. If the consumer is OK with that though, no worries.

I think our local CompUSA store is better than average - and it's staying in business. When I need help there, I look for Greg or Thomas.

Too bad the selection at Best buy is garbage...

That's for sure. Very limited selection, and you get an instant headache from the throbbing noise from the "audio" sections of the store (four wheel boom box equipment playing rap crap at top volume). Best Buy will never get any more of my money.

You must be right - and yes, Greg has helped me more than once. I'm not sure which one Thomas is.

The only problem I have ever had with CompUSA was when I bought my iBook last year (I should have waited a couple of months and got a MacBook....ugh) and had them install extra RAM. The tech apparently didn't check to be sure it was seated good - and a simple boot wasn't enough to see if it worked. When I got home, I wondered why it showed the stock amount of RAM. The chip wasn't seated - so I seated it myself. They credited me back the install cost.

....most everything on their shelves is 3 - 6 months obsolete. They can't compete with the Internet ordering.

>>Ive never much been impressed with compusa, best buy is really eating their lunch.<<

Yep. They are next door to each other here in the Southcenter area. I've only bought three or four things but every time, even with computer equipment, I found myself choosing best buy when I compared the offerings of the two stores.

Well, also I am one of those people that actually mails in the rebate forms.

I really hate going to Best Buy also. It is always my last choice for anything. Numerous problems too many to list.

I saw that - the only one in the whole Research Triangle.

Fortunately, there is a good computer store at the Crabtree Valley Mall.
