CompUSA to close more than half their stores; 126 U.S. locations to close within 90 days

Excerpt -

As part of its plan to realign the organization, CompUSA has announced a comprehensive strategy to improve the company's financial status. The realignment includes a cash infusion, store closures, major expense reductions and a corporate restructuring.

As part of CompUSA's realignment strategy, the company will receive a $440 million cash capital infusion. The financial boost will be designated to improve the company's balance sheet.

"Based on changing conditions in the consumer retail electronics market, the company identified the need to close and sell stores with low performance or non strategic, old store layouts and locations faced with market saturation. The process began last week with the closing of four CompUSA stores and over the next 60-90 days, the company will close a total of 126 stores in the United States to focus on initiatives that enhance its top performing locations," said Roman Ross, chief executive officer, CompUSA, in the press release.

CompUSA says these moves will allow the company to focus its efforts and ensure a strong presence in its 103 stores in 39 states and Puerto Rico.

Ditto. I wonder if there'll be some good sales at CompUSA? :-)

They already closed the CompUSA store in Carousal Mall (Syracuse NY) around Christmas.

CompUsa's time has past.
There was a time when CompUsa was the place to go for anything more than blank floppies. Now that you can get hard disk drives at Target in the bargain bin.... time for CompUsa to turn out the lights.

I used to love to go to compusa to browse but now I buy at best buy and if I can get it there, I order it online.

That's because Compusa decided to go afer the comsumer and turned their backs on small businesses. And to no one's surprise, consumers chose the lowest price. Too bad the selection at Best buy is garbage, and this will force a lot of people to simply shop online. I kinda liked the impulse urge to buy the product immediately instead of saving a couple bucks(if you include shipping) and waiting a week+ versus an online store.

Now that the Apple Store has opened in our city, I have no need for CompUSA.

"The process began last week with the closing of four CompUSA stores and over the next 60-90 days, the company will close a total of 126 stores in the United States . . ."

That is what happens when you combine arrogance and crappy service in a market sector not protected by government intervention. If they were the Dept of Motor Vehicles they could have gotten away with that. Given real-world competion? Adios, and don't let the screen door catch you on the way out.

I interviewed for a Service Manager job with them a couple years ago. $109 just to install Windows plus the cost of the OS. Other PC service prices were just as bad or worse.

I didn't go back for the second interview. I couldn't charge people those prices.

Generally their retail was way overpriced compared to other stores, so the only time I went in was if I absolutely needed something right then or it was on sale. Not a good way to build customer loyalty.

Now how can you tell which stores are closing. I want to get some discounts.

compusa only market is if you have to have it right now.

I left my laptop power supply at home and went there to get another one right away.

Otherwise, I see no reason to go there for anything.

My speculation on the impact of this news for manufacturers -

Winners - Dell and Apple

Losers - HP, Compaq, Acer, e-Machines, Microsoft

I'd say the Directrons, Softeggs, and other online merchants have really put the screws to Compusa, and besides, Microcenter has just flat out beat them at their own game. I ALWAYS thought they sucked.
