Kerry grills nominee over Swift boat By SAM HANANEL, Associated Press Writer 22 minutes ago
A Senate hearing that began with glowing tributes to a St. Louis businessman and his qualifications to become ambassador to Belgium turned bitterly divisive Tuesday after he was criticized for supporting a controversial conservative group.
Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., grilled nominee Sam Fox about why he donated $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 presidential race. The group of Vietnam veterans made unsubstantiated allegations against Kerry then the Democratic presidential nominee and charged that Kerry did not deserve the medals he won in the Vietnam War.
"Might I ask you what your opinion is with respect to the state of American politics as regards the politics of personal destruction?" Kerry asked near the end of the hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Fox, one of the nation's most generous contributors to Republican candidates and causes, said he shared Kerry's concerns that politics "has become mean and destructive."
Fox said he didn't recall who asked him to give to the group and blamed partisans on both sides for contributing to so-called 527 groups that are not subject to conventional campaign finance rules.
"So is that your judgment that you would bring to the ambassadorship, that two wrongs make a right?" Kerry asked.
"I did it because politically it's necessary if the other side's doing it," Fox said.

I have checked C-span to see if they have the video. I don't see that they have this hearing archived.
Dang...jon carry may have had a hissy fit for no reason.
Oh, I see, Hussein...if it's your ox being gored, then you find it "unsatisfying".
You two-faced POS.
You and John F'n Kerry also, who, if you didn't know, served in Vietnam.
Just not honorably.
Two P'sos in a pod.
Like anyone's going to believe that. If he didn't donate to Republican political causes he wouldn't be up for the post in the first place.
If they were unsubstantiated, why is Kerry so hot to bury them?
What a whiney moron. I am surprised he isn't sitting at Pelosi's table in the inner circle, they whine exactly the same way.
Now it is Kerry's turn to call the President and complain that people are being mean to him. Still.
It's like watching a nursery school class. pathetic.
I remeber working with a woman who thought it was terrible for them to question Kerry's medals. My reply, ok, maybe so. But if you look at the medals he won in a short time with little if any hospital stay, that would make him the greatest war hero. I asked her if she thought Kerry was the greatest war hero ever in our history. She voted for GWB(thank you, thank you)
Good choice. :-)
Leave it to Kerry to make it about him.
If he had any guts he would have said: " Because, Senator, I happen to agree on everything they said and stand for!" Or he could have said: " I gave the fifty thousand dollars because that is ALL they would allow me to give".
"unsubstantiated allegations" my Aunt Fannie's ass.
I care a lot less about the "Politics of Personal Destruction" (invented and mastered by Fat Boy Teddie) than I do about the Politics of National Destruction practised by that traitorous SOB during the Vietnam and Iraq wars.
Give up on the SF180 discharge paperwork. He can't ever show the papers...because that little dishonorable discharge will show up. We all know that now. Its amusing that the media won't touch this with a ten-foot pole. What is even more amusing is that no one from the defense department (retired of course)...is standing up to admit they were on the board that discharged him on the first go-around. It was such an unusual event...that you would think at least ten people would be involved and would remember it. That is the part that has me curious.
Which left the allegations they didn't investigate standing.
No, Jon Carry is a festering puss pimple on a pigs ass.
