Kerry grills nominee over Swift boat By SAM HANANEL, Associated Press Writer 22 minutes ago

A Senate hearing that began with glowing tributes to a St. Louis businessman and his qualifications to become ambassador to Belgium turned bitterly divisive Tuesday after he was criticized for supporting a controversial conservative group.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., grilled nominee Sam Fox about why he donated $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 presidential race. The group of Vietnam veterans made unsubstantiated allegations against Kerry — then the Democratic presidential nominee — and charged that Kerry did not deserve the medals he won in the Vietnam War.

"Might I ask you what your opinion is with respect to the state of American politics as regards the politics of personal destruction?" Kerry asked near the end of the hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Fox, one of the nation's most generous contributors to Republican candidates and causes, said he shared Kerry's concerns that politics "has become mean and destructive."

Fox said he didn't recall who asked him to give to the group and blamed partisans on both sides for contributing to so-called 527 groups that are not subject to conventional campaign finance rules.

"So is that your judgment that you would bring to the ambassadorship, that two wrongs make a right?" Kerry asked.

"I did it because politically it's necessary if the other side's doing it," Fox said.

You beat me to it. How come Kerry hasn't sued anyone for SLANDER? He and the Clintons should be the wealthiest people in the world for all their won law suites against those who slandered them.

First of all...what is OBAMA doing as a committee Chairman??

Second of all....this was Prs. Bush's nominee, right??

So, why shouldn't he give to a cause that wanted to beat carry???

Third of all...those charges against carry were NOT unsubstantiated!!!

Fourth...Doesn't this show everyone WHY jon carry would have made a LOUSY POTUS??? How would he have reacted if he had to put up with the constant critcism and name-calling that Prs. Bush has had to put up with??

Pres. Bush has repeatedly been called a liar, war-monger, terrorist..and that is from the SENATORS!!!

What a petty, petty man jon carry is...and what an cocky a$$hole that Obama has turned out to be!!!

I did not realize that soldiers "won" their medals. I always thought that they were "awarded". Getting medals is NOT a contest.

Well, John F. Kerry, you promised to sign Form 180 to publicly release all government documents in your name.

But you Lied, John F. Kerry. You only authorized a partial release. Only a little tidbit.

Come on, JF Kerry, let's talk, let's chat, let's dialogue about your TREASON!

You're quite right. A mature man would have thought himself above this sort of thing.

"Sen. Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record), D-Ill., a presidential hopeful and chairman of Tuesday's hearing, said he found Fox's responses "unsatisfying." He said he would have preferred if Fox admitted it was a mistake to contribute to the Swift Boat group."

This bugged me more then anything Kerry said.In other words "we in the Democrap Party don't like who you contributed to,so admit you were wrong or you can forget the job". What a total punk !!!

Unsubstantiated????? I don't think so. The smearing of the Swifties is one of the great disgraces of our time and continues to this day. True heroes and patriots from Viet Nam being trashed and no one in the media says hold on now, being Swift boated means someone finally speaks the truth. Makes me sick.

Or, he should have told the truth, and said, "Well Senator, I didn't want you to be President, and by the way, you still haven't released your military records".

Perfect!!

It is pitiful...when the reporter WRITES something that is worse than what the story is about, right??

That was the opinion of the writer, FGS.

Sam Hananel needs to have his press pass yanked for this.

That would be nice, but they aren't really "reporters" any longer. They're trying to make the world a "better place."
