Senator John McCain said Monday the war in Iraq has been mismanaged for years.
He said Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (news - bio) will be remembered as one of the worst to ever hold the job.
He said the United States is paying a heavy price for the mismanagement.
He said Rumsfeld never put enough troops on the ground to succeed in Iraq.
Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating and former Texas Senator Phil Gramm were at his side.
Both endorsed McCain over the weekend.

Great points...thank you.
As long as we are thinking toward 2008, I think it is only fitting to revise what Senator MacaCains actions to sabotage the Republican Party in the past two years, especially as he contemplates running for President. What this man did to his own party goes straight to the quality of his character. "With friends like these who needs enemies!" the saying goes and could not apply any better in this case.

McCain sucking up to the MSM (again). Totally predictable. He will sell out any individual or group to further his career.
If you become a hero by being captured, I suppose you dream of how to fight wars in your cell. In that instance wars are managed, not fought.
Maybe McCain doesn't read history. We had a half million soldiers in Vietnam. He must of missed that while staying at the Hanoi Hilton. Someone should let him know.
Rummy was right not to repeat the mistake. It would have been more fodder for the roadside bombers and surface to air missiles. What we don't know is who stopped us from using more aggressive strategies like MOABing the Sunni Triangle and Sadr City and carrying out hot pursuit across enemy borders.
Bingo. This is very slightly disguised criticism of the President. GW appointed him and stood by him for many years. If he wasn't doing his job it was the responsibility of the President to replace him.
Apparently, McC doesn't have the cojones to criticize GW directly.
McCain needs to make up his mind whether he wants to confront the Revolutionary Islamists or not.
This should not be a matter of debate. They are at war with us whether we are at war with them or not.
John McCain is a scary thought as a potential president. While he generally manages to look halfway sane, I have seen occasions where his eyes exposed an insanity that is eerie to behold. The man did a great service and suffered greatly as a POW, but he does not belong in government, much less as President..
Proving once again that we really need to clean house in the Senate....TERM LIMITS!!!!!!!!!!!!
NordP
THANK YOU MR. SECRETARY FOR CARING ABOUT DOING WHAT IS RIGHT TO HELP OUR COUNTRY. DON'T LISTEN TO OLD BLOWHARD McPAIN, SIR!
ABSOLUTELY!!
Correction = KNIFE
I don't think it is a "diguised" attack on the POTUS at all.
McCain has attacked Pres. Bush at every opportunity...I think this was an open attack on Bush.
McCain is a LOSER.
If he weren't old, mean and crazy, he'd make a good president.
Well put!!!!!
Poor John McCain. The fawning press coverage and invites to the Sunday talk shows have all gone away, and just like a smack addict who can't get his fix, the withdrawal is making him do crazy things in order to score.
Was it Rumsfeld's idea to fight a politically correct counterinsurgency in Iraq, or Colin Powell's, or President Bush's? Whose idea was it to leave Iran and Syria off-limits as no-go sanctuaries for the terrorist "insurgents"? I seem to recall that the State Department was given a huge role in running the occupation, and that Paul Bremer - who everybody acknowledges made a ton of serious mistakes there - wasn't exactly Rummy's man.
I think hanging all the blame on Rumsfeld for what the leftist media and defeatist Democrat party have spent three years selling as a "quagmire" in Iraq is a copout. Furthermore, the United States military is not losing in Iraq. They just haven't been allowed to do what's necessary to win. Maybe now they will be, if our beloved lazy, easily distracted public will show some backbone.
Hindsight is 20/20, of course.
I suspect Gramm may be cheerleading Gates via trashing Rumsfeld in order to gain favor for the obtaining the Presidency of Texas A&M.

An excellent assessment and I am in total agreement.
McCain: One of the wishy washiest Senators ever to be in office. He couldn't polish Rumsfeld's wingtips.
