Giuliani: Gun control helped lower crime

Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.

"I used gun control as mayor," he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But "I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."

He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.

Addressing another potential trouble spot with conservatives, Giuliani spoke in favor of a border fence, saying, "You have to have secure borders, you have to have a fence, and the fence I think has to be a highly technological one."

The nation needs to know, he said, who is coming into the country and why. But he provided scant details on how he would deal with illegal immigrants already in the country. Citizens, he added, should be able to read and write English.

Giuliani was to make an address Monday in Silicon Valley and he was to appear Tuesday at an agricultural fair in the Central Valley.

Asked when he would make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination, Giuliani said: "Well, formally announce? I don't know."

That has been the historical trend. Republican presidents become more conservative at 1600 Penn Ave while Democrats become more liberal after taking up residence in the WH.

The argument is only false if you don't believe in numbers.

Doesn't matter what Rudy Giuliani believes in or doesn't believe in. If you are a Conservative, The 2008 election is about one thing and one thing only. Stopping Hillary.

And we can't stop her unless we support Giuliani's bid for the nomination? You don't know for sure she will win the Democrat nomination. I am sure she won't. But in any case, supporting a flawed RINO is something many conservatives cannot do, in good conscience, regardless of the heat you apply to their toes.

If you don't win then "principles" becomes a philosophical exercise over a cup of coffee.

Would they be any better with a RINO in office? (And why the quote marks? They look just like McCain* marks.)

What numbers? I hope you're not talking about poll numbers two years before the election.

Bush has NOT governed more conservatively since his election in 2001. CFR, free pills for granny, NCLB, billions in aid to Africa, etc etc - does ANY of that ring a bell? With the pitiful exception of his tax cuts (which will be made irrelevent in a few short years anyway to pay for all of his compassion) he has governed like a centerist Dem. Your assertion stinks as does your candidate Giuliani.

Regulating consistent with the 2nd Amendment would be no regulations at all. And hunting? Yes in the sense that the 2nd guarantees our right to bear arms to hunt politicians who abuse power, erode our rights and destroy the Republic... whenever that time comes. I suspect we need that right much more today than did the first generations of the United States.

Rudy also inherited a mess that couldn't have gotten any worse. The City bottomed out and there was only one direction to go.

I like Giuliani and believe he was good for NYC given everything in total including the period of time he governed. As far as the POTUS is concerned, the Rudy template doesn't quite work for me. The Life and Liberty thing is somewhat dubious.

"I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."

"I just choose to ignore it when it's convenient."

He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.

Clear evidence he just doesn't get it.

Think Giuliani's postion on guns is bad?...Imagine what Hillary's position would be. That should resolve any Rudy Dyspepsia you may have.

The feds have consistently interpreted "regulate" to encompass "ban."

If the feds can misuse this clause "To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes" to ban marijuana and other drugs (even those that never leave an individual state), they can surely misuse the second amendment "regulated" to ban guns.

Neither of their positions is good. Both need to be kept as far away from the white house as possible.

Rudy just simply DOES NOT GET IT, on RKBA. He sounds exactly like John Kerry on the issue.

You have a choice, vote Giuliani or say hello to a second Clinton presidency. So what's it gonna be?

What's the difference, other than Rudy actually owns dresses?

Before the nomination is won it is premature to say it's Hillary's version of gun control or Rudy's. Lots of time to shut down Rudy and have a pro-gun candidate.
