Cape Verde - Italians stoned to death on holiday

Excerpt -

Three Italian women were brutally attacked while on a surfing holiday at a Cape Verde resort island, dragged into the woods, and left for dead at the bottom of a hole, according to the single survivor who recounted the tragedy yesterday.

When she came to, the teenager said, she crawled out of the hole and went for help. The two women with her, aged 28 and 33, had been stoned to death.

The story of the attack, which occurred on Friday, has shocked Italians, many of whom consider the islands of the west coast of Africa to be a holiday paradise.

Italian premier Romano Prodi, on a government trip to India, was reported to be "stunned, aghast". The Italian Foreign Ministry said the two women had been "barbarously murdered".

She said the attackers sprayed them with some kind of "bothersome" spray, immobilised them and took them to the woods where a hole had been dug. Then "he did what he did", Agnese said, apparently referring to a sexual attack. This article: http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=223782007

Sad but this sort of thing happens from time to time. Especially, when away from crowded areas.

Drastic way to cut down on the tourist trade.

Anyone familiar with the laws of Cape Verde? If found guilty of murder during the commission of a felony (rape), do these men face the death penalty?

No, perpetrators were hardly Amish. But not ROPers, either I suspect. Cape Verde was a Portuguese colony and I believe most residents are at least nominally Christian. According to the Italian papers, one of the killers was a "tour guide" who had been a "friend" of one of the victims. At least one of the victims lived and worked on the island, which apparently has become fashionable as a sun and sea destination for Euro tourists. Italian press reports that about 50 Italians live on the island, nearly all in the hotel, restaurant or condo sales/rental business.

Actually, there's not a significant muzzy population on Cape Verde, not yet anyway, but it's sure a play right out of their book, isn't it.

I don't know what this euro fascination is with going to vacation in a country that's really just short of hell on earth.
"Togo was great, and the roaming government backed death squads were little more than a mild nuisance."
"The music of Cameroon was breathtaking and Nigel only lost one eye to the loa loa, so all in all, it was a ripping holiday."

'Course we've got Americans who go on vacation to mexico...

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.

Not any more!

In 1995 I had planned to spend some time in Mexico each year; unfortunately I am fluent is Spanish (but don't look it). When I realized the true conditions, as opposed to what the tourists are told and read, I quit going.

Gee, it sounds a little bit like the Wichita race murders, but they never got national press, and the President certainly didn't have anything to say about them. It must be that killing Italians is different from killing Americans.

The tourists can stop going there and the locals can enjoy their poverty.

Cape Verde is predominately Catholic and some Church of the Nazarene Protestants from the original Portuguese colonizers (Cape Verde was uninhibited until the Portuguese discovered it in the 15th Century). Most of the islanders are of Creole / Mulatto mix and are descendants of the original Portuguese and the African slaves they brought over ...

This is probably just very bad people doing very bad things, not related to any particular religious slant.

Having been there....Lots of poor Africans from the mainland are arriving in Cape Verde because the economy is pretty good and cape verdeans are a gentle and accepting people. So, the stoning could have been commited by the immigrants...and yes, many of those arriving are Muslims.

Cape Verde was uninhibited until the Portuguese discovered it

What happened then? Were the Portugese frigid or something? :)
