Space shuttle astronaut arrested at OIA on attempted kidnapping, battery charges

A NASA astronaut is charged with attacking her rival for another astronaut's attention early Monday at Orlando International Airport, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.

Lisa Marie Nowak drove from Texas to meet the 1 a.m. flight of a younger woman who had also been seeing the male astronaut Nowak pined for, according to Orlando police.

Nowak -- who was a mission specialist on a Discovery launch last summer -- was wearing a trench coat and wig and had a knife, BB pistol, rubber tubing and plastic bags, reports show. Once U.S. Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman arrived, Nowak followed her to the airport's Blue Lot for long-term parking, tried to get into Shipman's car and doused her with pepper spray, according to reports.

I remember a Lt Col pilot getting an Article 15 (Administrative punishment) for having an adulterous affair with a civilian chick.

His drop-dead gorgeous Major-pilot wife was in my command so I would see her around occasionally. They had 2 young kids, and the best I recall they managed to stay together.

But every time I saw her I would think to myself "if I met that asshole I'd like to deck him for doing such a thing to her".

If she's busted down to an E-1 and given a Bad Conduct Discharge (BCD-Big Chicken Dinner).

Oh yes he did. In terms of loss of all benefits and privileges, there is no difference between a BCD and a DD. A Dishonorable Discharge is almost never given for some reason. I think I saw only one in my cases, and its usually given in especially heinous crimes (ie molestation, for example).

Run of the mill stuff rates a BCD.

Let me clear up one thing for y'all: An officer cannot get a Bad Conduct or Dishonorable Discharge in a Court-Martial - those are for enlisted members only. An officer can only be be "Dismissed from the Service" as part of his/her criminal sentence (in addition to jail and all the other normal punishments).

But practically the result is the same - loss of all rights and privileges to military retirement, and everything else.

I became a Takeshi fan by pure accident less than a year ago when I saw Sonatine and Zatoichi. Now I have all his films on DVD. If I were younger I'd take up learning Japanese so I could enjoy his films in their original state.

Kitano is a genius. The greatest living filmmaker (and a pretty good writer, the funniest Japanese comedian, a former talented semi-pro baseball player and a great tap dancer, among other things.)

Well, just the "Conduct unbecoming an officer" charge would have gotten him there.....and I'm pretty sure there was some other stuff, but again, it wasn't my case...

A military court-martial conviction is the equivalent of a Federal felony conviction....so for starters you can forget about future government jobs...

I stand corrected. As the USAF does not have its own long-term 'care facility', anyone getting over a certain number of years went to Ft Leavenworth, Kansas (sent a few folks there myself, I'm proud to add...)

There is an Air Force Prison in Colorado Springs. I had an Airman working for me that had been there. Only the "day ladies" and his supervisor were told. He had been in a theft ring with his relatives, stealing fire extinguishers and test sets.
