He didn't follow the rule. The rule is "dub your anthem", singing conditions are usually dreadful between the left overs from the fireworks, and this time rain, plus the size of the global audience tends to put the zap on even the most esperienced performers head. Dub it in a nice quiet studio somewhere and lip synch. The generally accepted best SB antherm ever (Whitney Houstons) was lip synched.
