:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
How al-Qaida Fared in 2006
-Full Story-

In 2006, agents of al-Qaida, as well as those inspired by its ideology, continued their attacks. Violence in Iraq intensified, and Afghanistan saw its bloodiest year since 2001.

Despite worsening chaos on those fronts, counterterrorist forces arrested and killed high-profile terrorists and kept the West free from attack. But these actions don't appear to have weakened the appeal of al-Qaida's agenda. "Home-grown" militants around the world joined its jihad, as regional fighting heightened perceptions of a global war on Islam.

Here's an assessment of some of the most significant gains and losses for al-Qaida last year: Read more..

Usamah, an American convert to Islam, has told worshippers Osama Bin Laden is "better than a million George Bushes and a thousand Tony Blairs" and that non-Muslims are "pathological liars".

Yet the Brits allow this man to continue living on British soil when he is clearly a traitor and potentially extremely dangerous to the Brits and us.

Islamic superstition is dangerous to your health

Snip: National Health Services assistant Theresa Poupa was at London Chest Hospital during a cousin’s stay, and spoke of her amazement at the situation she observed, “I could not believe it. The signs are large enough and clear enough but they just took no notice and walked straight into the ward. I was there almost every day for three weeks and I saw it repeated dozens and dozens of times. When I raised the matter with the nursing staff they just shrugged and said that Muslims were refusing to use the gel because it contained alcohol.”

The Islamic University of Minnesota

Snip: An estimated 150,000 Muslims, mostly from Somalia, live in Minnesota. Donations from some of them made it possible to start the university, says Adnan Sameha, who helps with enrollment at IUM.

Understanding the mind of the Jihadist

Snip: The war on terror might be lost not on the streets of Baghdad but in the corridors of Congress. A divided America and Anti-Americanism serves our enemies well. Soon we may see a vote in Congress that says, "We can't stop the surge plan, but we don't support it." It is time for America to understand who the enemy is, the murderous ideology that is driving them and their strategy for success. This would be the Islamist's greatest fear.

Reconciliation talks begin in Somali

Snip: The 2-year-old transitional government only managed to establish itself in the capital in December. The ousted Islamic movement, which still has strong support in Mogadishu, has vowed to wage an Iraq-style insurgency, and clan rivalries also are a challenge for the government.

Tensions rise in US Muslim communities

Snip: Tensions between Shiite and Sunni Muslims in Iraq are echoing in Dearborn, Mich., and other communities.

'The Shiites were very happy that they killed Saddam (Hussein), but the Sunnis were in tears,' Aqeel Al-Tamimi, a Shiite Iraqi immigrant in Dearborn, told The New York Times. 'These people look at us like we sold our country to America.'

Dearborn`s Shiite mosques have had their windows shattered twice recently, the newspaper reported. Members of the Shiite community blamed the Sunni Muslims.

What is an Imambargah?

Sorry about that :-)
A imambargah is like a meeting or congregation hall. It's not as "holy" as a mosque but it is usually used for ritual ceremonies.

Thanks much MamaD. I recently read somewhere that Minnesota had the largest muslim population, in the U.S., outside of Dearbornistan, Mich.

Understanding The Mind Of The Jihadist

Excellent article, thanks for posting. I think more and more "regular" folks in the U.S., U.K., Australia and elsewhere understand the war we are in and how important it is. Most people don't want the world to be dominated by islam and sharia law. If things don't change I'm afraid we will be battling not only the radical islamists but the various governments as well. I sure hope I'm wrong. *sigh*

U.S. Police Work To Build Trust with Muslim Populations
05 February 2007

Washington -- There are 94 mosques in Houston, and Muzaffar Siddiqi, a local police officer, has visited them all. Siddiqi’s efforts to build trust, one mosque at a time, are typical of recent work by police in cities across the United States. Police officers want Muslims in their cities to know they can live and pray there just like any resident.

There is fear of police in some Muslim countries, and many Muslims in the United States have to be taught to trust law enforcement, said Siddiqi. In Pakistan, for example, where Siddiqi was born and where he is helping to build a police station, people often do not seek out help from police officers; instead, they hide from them.

In the United States, police officers need the trust of law-abiding citizens, including Muslims, to do their jobs protecting people and communities from criminals. “I recognize the importance of reaching out to our city's Muslim population,” Houston police Chief Harold Hurtt told USINFO.

Law enforcement training focuses on Arab, Muslim cultures
2/5/07

An Arab man is being questioned by law-enforcement officers and suddenly becomes uncooperative and refuses to make eye contact. Suspicious behavior or a clash of cultures?

The latter, according to a new training DVD that will be distributed to nearly 200,000 Homeland Security employees. A panel of Arab and Muslim scholars shown in the training video said it's a misconception that the action is evasive -- Arab culture considers it impolite to stare.

"The times in which we live, I think it is very important that all Americans understand Islam -- for law enforcement, it can be a matter of life and death," said Akbar Ahmed, professor of international relations at American University and one panelist in the video.

EU drafts plan to combat militant Islamists
Mon Feb 5, 2007

BRUSSELS - European Union states should clamp down on radical imams and Internet "hate speech" and train police and teachers on the dangers of Islamist militancy, according to a confidential plan seen by Reuters.

The paper on combating radicalisation, agreed by EU ambassadors, urges governments to monitor "travelling imams inciting to violence, talent spotters, recruiters and other leading figures and their movements within the European Union." It says EU states should collect and exchange information on these "radical inspirational figures," and pay special attention to diminishing their influence in prisons.

"Member states should encourage the Muslim communities not to rely on external imams, but also to ensure that imams are trained and recruited from their own communities," it adds.

Militant Islam is now seen as the major terrorism threat in the 27-nation EU. Authorities are trying to understand how young Muslim men are being radicalised and recruited for operations like the 2004 Madrid train bombings and 2005 suicide bombings on London's transport system. Some plots have also featured women.

Muslim Mau-Mauing

SNIP:Dallas is home to a large and relatively prosperous Muslim community. The Dallas Central Mosque is Texas’s largest. The area’s Muslims, though, have had a contentious relationship in recent years with the Dallas Morning News, mostly because of the paper’s groundbreaking 2001 reporting on the Holy Land Foundation, whose leadership is now under federal terrorism indictment. Since then, local Muslim leaders have engaged in a running dialogue with the News, with the declared aim of improving relations.

It was in that spirit that Sayyid Syeed, then head of the Islamic Society of North America, came in, together with a local delegation, to see the editorial board a few months after I arrived from New York in 2003. Syeed made a laborious presentation about how journalists needed to join with the organization in promoting peace, tolerance, and reconciliation. I knew something about ISNA and asked Syeed why—if his group truly supported peace and suchlike—its board included members directly linked to Islamic extremism and anti-Semitism, including the notorious Wahhabi-trained Brooklyn imam Siraj Wahhaj. The professorial Syeed dropped his polite mask, shook his fist at me, told me that I would one day “repent,” and compared my question with a Nazi inquisition.

Cameron attacks Muslim leader over Nazi comment (UK)
05.02.07

David Cameron today criticised a Muslim community leader who compared anti-terror raids in Birmingham to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany. The Tory leader, who met Muslim elders at Birmingham Central Mosque for almost two hours, emerged from the talks to urge all sections of the community to support the police.

Speaking outside the mosque, Mr Cameron also rejected claims by its chairman, Dr Mohammad Naseem, that Britain is becoming a police state and that the terror threat has been invented. "He's completely and utterly wrong and I think that's not responsible at all," Mr Cameron said. "It's quite clear from the events of 7/7 and other events that Britain does face a terrorist threat and we need to confront that and defeat it."

She's Muslim — and determined (Texas)
02/04/2007

Before 9-11, Sarwat Husain rarely wore a hijab — the Muslim headscarf. But just as the attacks on the United States changed the world, they transformed Husain.

Practically overnight, this product of a privileged upbringing in Pakistan became an activist, determined to defend Muslims from discrimination and to educate San Antonians about Islam and Middle-Eastern culture.

ACLU Renews Legal Challenge to Exclusion of Islamic Scholar From U.S. Soil
February 5, 2007

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a new legal complaint challenging the federal government’s continued exclusion of a prominent Swiss scholar, Tariq Ramadan, from the United States. The complaint also challenges a provision of the USA Patriot Act that, the ACLU says, authorizes the government to deny visas to foreign citizens on the basis of their political views.

Iraqi police selling weapons on black market
Monday, February 5, 2007

BAGHDAD - Like many of his colleagues, Abu Zaid was issued an Austrian-made Glock pistol when he joined the new U.S.-trained and equipped Iraqi police force. But after narrowly escaping death twice, including being shot at near a polling station in Baghdad during national elections in December 2005, he decided to quit, he said.

"I sold my Glock pistol and my bullet-proof vest for $1,500 so that I can feed my family until I find a safer job. They were mine to sell, after all I had risked my life and faced death," he told Reuters. Anecdotal evidence, including interviews with arms dealers, suggests that Abu Zaid is just one of many policemen selling the highly prized pistol on the black market, already a shopper's delight for buyers with enough cash.

Everything from the ubiquitous AK-47 assault rifle, the biggest-selling item, to rocket-propelled grenade launchers, sniper rifles and belt-fed medium machine guns are available, many looted from huge arms dumps immediately after the 2003 war.
