:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
How al-Qaida Fared in 2006
-Full Story-

In 2006, agents of al-Qaida, as well as those inspired by its ideology, continued their attacks. Violence in Iraq intensified, and Afghanistan saw its bloodiest year since 2001.

Despite worsening chaos on those fronts, counterterrorist forces arrested and killed high-profile terrorists and kept the West free from attack. But these actions don't appear to have weakened the appeal of al-Qaida's agenda. "Home-grown" militants around the world joined its jihad, as regional fighting heightened perceptions of a global war on Islam.

Here's an assessment of some of the most significant gains and losses for al-Qaida last year: Read more..

"Arab, Muslim cultures focus of law-enforcement video"
By Audrey Hudson
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
February 5, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: ""The times in which we live, I think it is very important that all Americans understand Islam -- for law enforcement, it can be a matter of life and death," said Akbar Ahmed, professor of international relations at American University and one panelist in the video.

"Take the security aspects of 9/11. All 19 hijackers and terrorists: Muslims. American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan: Muslim nations. The most-wanted people on the terror list: Osama bin Laden and [Abu Musab] Zarqawi: Muslims."

Mr. Ahmed said Muslims are also supporters and allies of the U.S., and that "it is important at this stage in history to understand Islam.""

Thanks, Oorang.
Here's a bit more:

The undercover agent usually passed the cash to Skaff at the welcome desk near Air France's ticket counter in a public area in the international terminal, authorities said.

The agent would then pass through the security checkpoint without the cash. Skaff returned the cash to him as he was about to board a flight to Paris, the charges alleged.

In that way, the agent was able to smuggle a combined $396,000 in cash overseas.

*** On one trip, he also smuggled a device capable of jamming cellular-phone reception, authorities said.***

Suspect linked to kamikaze attacks in Iraq held (Spain)
5 February 2007

REUS — Police arrested on Monday a Moroccan terrorist suspect who was wanted in his own country for alleged links to sending suicide bombers to Iraq.

Mbark El Jaafari was the subject of an international arrest warrant in Morocco. He is said to have links to Al Qaeda and the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat. This organisation, which was behind the insurrection in Algeria, is said to recruit volunteers to fight in Morocco, Irak and Algeria. But it suffered a number of serious setbacks in Germany and Morocco last year after police arrested members.

Police believe, however, that since May last year, the group has sent 32 kamikazes to launch suicide bomb attacks in Iraq. Similar operations are thought to be planned in Morocco. El Jaafari was thought to have been trained in an Al Qaeda camp in Afganistan in 2001. He was arrested in Reus, in Catalonia.

Al-Qaeda Linked Pakistani Group 'Based In Spain'

Barcelona, 5 Feb. 2007 - Pakistani terror group Jaish-i-Mohamed (The Army of Mohammed) - allegedly linked to al-Qaeda's leadership - has made Spain's northeastern region of Catalonia its principle European base, Spanish daily El Periodico reported on Monday, citing unnamed Pakistani security sources. The group has recruited Pakistani nationals resident in Spain and sent them to Pakistan, where it has put them in contact with al-Qaeda's networks in the tribal regions, the security sources said, quoted by El Periodico.

Jaish-i-Mohamed is alleged to have sought jihadi recruits in Spanish mosques. In Catalonia in particular, its role has been principally a logistical one: besides finding jihadi recruits, the group is allegedly concerned with financing and sending to Pakistan, passports and other documents that have been stolen in Europe. Spain and Pakistan's intelligence services are reportedly monitoring the movements of suspected individuals between the two countries.

The group - which has been linked to the deadly 7 July 2005 attacks on London's transport system that killed 56 people and injured 700 - is not the only terror formation to operate in Spain, according to El Periodico. The paper alleges the militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba (The Army of the Pure) - which is banned in Pakistan - also uses Spain as a logistical and fund gathering base.

Spain's anti-terror forces admit they are concerned about the infiltration of extremists from such groups as Jaish-i-Mohamed and Lashkar-e-Toiba within the Pakistani community. Catalonian police have signalled the presence in the region of several "highly mobile" radical Pakistani groups who are reported to be moving around Spain and other countries.

Will Turkey Have an Islamist President?
Friday, February 2, 2007

While the campaigns have not officially begun, election season in Turkey is heating up. This spring, the Turkish parliament will select a president to replace current president Ahmet Necdet Sezer, whose seven-year term ends on May 16, 2007.

On or before November 4, 2007, Turks will head to the polls to choose a new parliament. Not only does this year mark the first since 1973--and 1950 before that--in which Turks will inaugurate a new president and parliament in the same year, but this year’s polls will also impact the future of Turkey more than perhaps any election in the past half century.

If Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan wins the presidency and his Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, also known as AKP) retains its parliamentary majority, Islamists would control all Turkish offices and be positioned to erode secularism and redefine state and society.

Cuneyd Zapsu, Erdoðan’s chief advisor, has donated money to Yasin al-Qadi, a Saudi businessman identified by both the U.S. Treasury Department and the United Nations as an al Qaeda financier here as well as his associate and fellow financier, Abdul Latif Saleh here.

Pupils aged five 'poisoned' at Islamic school that 'teaches hate' (UK)
5th February 2007

An Islamic school is poisoning the minds of pupils with lessons in hate, a former teacher claims. Colin Cook, 57, says textbooks used by children as young as five at the King Fahad Academy in Acton describe Jews as "repugnant" and "apes" and Christians as "pigs".

Pupils have allegedly been heard saying they want to "kill Americans", praising 9/11 and idolising Osama bin Laden as their "hero". There are fears that it could become a breeding ground for terrorists with Mr Cook warning: "The school could produce a dangerous harvest."

Its sister school of the same name in Bonn has been singled out by the German intelligence services as a meeting place for activists linked to terrorism. p>Excerpted

14-year-olds studying al Qaeda propaganda at school (UK)
05.02.07

Pupils as young as 14 are being exposed to Al Qaeda propaganda in history lessons, experts have claimed.

Popular course materials on the 9/11 atocities fail to properly balance Osama bin Laden's rantings with opposing points of view and present "substantial" justification of terrorism.

Historians say the web-based project, produced by the long-established Schools History Project, is a flagrant example of how the subject has been watered down by politically-correct teaching theories which state that children should learn to view the past through different "perspectives".

Radical cleric praises bin Laden (UK)
4th February 2007

A radical Islamic cleric is operating at the heart of the community where police foiled an alleged plot to kidnap and murder a British soldier.

Abu Usamah, 42, has been accused of preaching inflammatory anti-Western sermons at the Green Lane Mosque in Birmingham, close to the homes of several suspects arrested last week.

Usamah, an American convert to Islam, has told worshippers Osama Bin Laden is "better than a million George Bushes and a thousand Tony Blairs" and that non-Muslims are "pathological liars".

Al-Qaeda Terrorist Suspect Living In Madagascar
February 5th 2007

A senior member of the al-Qaeda network - Fazul Abdullah Mohammed - is in hiding on the island of Madagascar off the coast of southern Africa, reports said Monday.

Midi Madagasikara, the island's largest newspaper, quoted military "and other" sources as saying that Mohammed was directing al-Qaeda's activities in East Africa from a hideout in the harbour city of Majunga in the north-west of the country.

Mohammed was reported to have come to Madagascar, where his partner is said to live, from the neighbouring Comoros Islands. The government in Antananarivo did not confirm or deny the report.

Mohammed is on the US list of 35 most-wanted terrorists over suspicion of his involvement in the bombings of US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998, which killed 228 people and injured over 5,000. The US government is offering 5 million dollars for information leading to his capture.

A close relative of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, was shot dead in Madagascar in January according to unconfirmed reports.

Syria says it foiled arms shipment
Feb. 4, 2007
DAMASCUS, Syria

Syrian customs officers have thwarted an attempt to smuggle arms to Lebanon through an Iraqi truck, Syria's official news agency, SANA, reported Sunday. The truck, carrying 95 9mm guns, a 9mm machine gun, a Russian rifle, 190 bullets and 290 clips, was seized as it was traveling through the Arida border crossing heading to the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli last week, SANA quoted a Syrian customs official as saying.

The news agency said the arms, concealed under the truck, were to be delivered to a restaurant owner in Tripoli. The smugglers, whose identities were not disclosed, have been arrested and handed over to Syrian authorities for investigation, SANA said. Lebanese officials were not immediately available for comment.

Presence of ‘high value’ militants: Major offensive in Waziristan soon
Monday, February 05, 2007

ISLAMABAD: The government has ordered the deployment of thousands of paramilitary personnel across the tribal areas ahead of a major offensive in the volatile South and North Waziristan agencies to hunt for “high value” terrorist targets, Daily Times has learnt.

Sources in the Interior Ministry said that the government had ordered the deployment of 2,000 personnel each of the Frontier Corps and Levies in Waziristan to comb the region ahead of the “grand operation”.

“Security forces are expected to begin a grand operation in the troubled Waziristan tribal region to hunt down al Qaeda and Taliban militants, including Baitullah Mehsud, who is holed up in the area,” the sources said, citing a decision made at a high-level meeting held late on Saturday night.
