FOX News Poll: Voters Most Comfortable With Rudy Giuliani as President

More voters say they would be comfortable with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani as president than other top 2008 contenders, though majorities would also be comfortable with other leaders from both parties, according to the latest FOX News Poll. In addition, of all the 2008 hopefuls — announced or frequently mentioned as a possibility — voters want to hear more from one candidate specifically: Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

Opinion Dynamics Corporation conducted the national telephone poll of 900 registered voters for FOX News from January 30 to January 31. The poll has a 3-point error margin.

None of this information tells me whether I could support him or not.

Has he nailed down a position on Supreme Court nominations that would be inconsistent with an appeal to pro-life Republicans in the primaries and which is centered on the promise to appoint only strict-constructionists to the bench? A pro-abortion candidate could feel very strongly that Roe was an abuse of power by the court.

Has he nailed down a position on gun legislation that would be inconsistent with an appeal to the gun-lobby in the primaries--an appeal centered on a promise to veto federal legislation that interferes with the states' right to pass concealed carry laws or that othewise interferes with the states existing rights to legislate on the ownership of weapons? A pro-gun-control candidate could feel very strongly that the constitution is violated when the federal government limits the powers of the states in this matter.

I don't know the answer to either question, but, until I find out the answers, I have no idea how well he will do in the Republican primaries, or whether a conservative Republican should support him.

Anyone reading FR would think so. Thankfully most people have actually been to fund raisers. I think our Mayor participated in one last year for a spring event and dressed as a woman. It's one way to get people to pay big $$ to a charitable event -- to see the politicos making fools of themselves. LOL

In my book the chart matters. The chart is all about the Nov2008 election. Issues are what drives campaigns. If you choose Rudy, you'll be voting for a liberal. If you choose Hillary, you'll be voting for a liberal. The poll was basically meaningless, name recognition and a headline. Woohoo. More importantly are the Republican primaries. This is the time to push for the best conservative candidates available. Not the most liberal candidate. In the current FR poll question three of the top four spots are held by strong social conservatives. Gingrich, Hunter and Tancredo get 65% of FReepers votes. The liberal Rudy Giuliani gets 12.3%. Rudy isn't selling with conservatives on FR and for good reason.

Rudy is a fiscal, domestic, and foreign policy conservative that supports strict constructionist judges. That's certainly not my definition of a liberal. However, I can see where an unpragmatic, all or nothing, right wing extremist could find that liberal.

Sorry, I'm not following you. You mean that evangelicals didn't vote for non-performing Republicans in Congress, even if there was an evangelican [C]hristian in the WhiteHouse, but they WILL vote for Rudy because of his performance? I don't think I follow that reasoning. It seems like Rudy would never be able to attract or hold their votes if he performs according to his stated beliefs.
