Tens of Thousands Rally in D.C. for Troop Withdrawal

Tens of thousands of demonstrators from across the country converged on the Mall in Washington today to urge the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq as President Bush is proposing to send more troops in an effort to stabilize the country.

The enthusiastic crowd was generally good natured and orderly, waving hundreds of colorful placards and chanting slogans such as "Not another day, not another dollar" and "This is what democracy looks like."

~~snip~~

Across the street, however, was a counter-protest, staged by the Washington chapter of the conservative organization FreeRepublic.com. Those protesters, who organizers said feared that the antiwar march would hurt the U.S. anti-terror efforts, yelled and sported signs, such as one that read, "Go to hell traitors. You dishonor our dead on hallowed ground."

At least one veteran from the Iraq war tried to bridge the divide between the groups. Cpl. Joshua Sparling, 25, from Port Huron, Mich., who lost his right leg below the knee in an 2005 explosion in Ramadi, spoke to both groups.

Near the end of the CodePink rally, Sparling, a patient at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital who used crutches to walk, went to the microphone and told the protesters that they are entitled to the right to demonstrate and must fight for what they believe in. But he reminded them that the situation is dire for many Iraqis and U.S. troops there believe that they are fighting to help provide a better option for the people of Iraq. He was rewarded with general applause, although a few feint boos could be heard.

When he finished, he walked across the street and spoke with the FreeRepublic group also.

Seeing the pictures of "Hollyweird" at the protest made me think of a book I was scanning this weekend at Borders. It is called, "The Enemy At Home: The Cultural Left and Its Responsibility for 9/11 by Dinesh D'Souza.

This guy had some very good points and I think I'm going to buy the book. One of the things he stressed is how the radical muslims and the radical left and the media are portraying America. Here is a little excerpt from his website:

..... In my book, published this month, I argue that the American left bears a measure of responsibility for the volcano of anger from the Muslim world that produced the 9/11 attacks. President Jimmy Carter's withdrawal of support for the shah of Iran, for example, helped Ayatollah Khomeini's regime come to power in Iran, thus giving radical Islamists control of a major state; and President Bill Clinton's failure to respond to Islamic attacks confirmed bin Laden's perceptions of U.S. weakness and emboldened him to strike on 9/11. I also argue that the policies that U.S. "progressives" promote around the world -- including abortion rights, contraception for teenagers and gay rights -- are viewed as an assault on traditional values by many cultures, and have contributed to the blowback of Islamic rage.

The media and the radical left have convinced the "world" that they represent Americans. That Hollywood is what America is really like. He believes that conservatives need to work with Moderate Muslims to understand that we share common moral issues, if not a similar religion.

They only credited Free Republic in order to mention that a sign said "Go to Hell," giving their knee-jerk hate-America readers cause to view us as hateful and vile. They are vipers and can never be trusted.

The don't let them get as close ot the Capitol as they used to either.... they used to set up the platform right in front of the reflecting pool by the Grant statute. Now they're back at mid-mall, by the merry-go-round and the arts and industries building.

DINNER IN MONTANA

This is one of the best thing I've read in ages!!!!! I wish I could go there for dinner!!!!
This is a great story! The radio station America FM was doing one of its "Is Anyone Listening?" bits this morning. The first question was, "Ever have a celebrity pull up with the 'Do you know who I am?' routine?"
A woman called in and said that a few years a go, while visiting her cattle rancher uncle in Billings, MT, she had occasion to go to dinner at a restaurant that does not take reservations. The wait was about 45 minutes; many ranchers and their wives were waiting. TedTurner and his ex-wife Jane Fonda came in the restaurant and wanted a table. The hostess informed them that they'd have to wait 45 minutes. Jane Fonda asked the hostess, "Do you know who I am?" The hostess answered, "Yes, but you 'll have to wait 45 minutes." Then Jane asked if the manager was in.
When the manager came out, he asked, "May I help you?""Do you know who we are?" both Ted and Jane asked. "Yes, but these folks have been waiting, and I can't put you ahead of them." Then Ted asked to speak to the owner. The owner came out, and Jane again asked,"Do you know who I am?" The owner answered, "Yes, I do. Do you know who I am? I am the owner of this restaurant and I am a Vietnam Veteran. Not only will you not get a table ahead of my friends and neighbors who have been waiting here, but you also will not be eating in my restaurant tonight or any night. Good bye."
Only in America- what a great country.
To all who received this e-mail, this is a true story and the name of the steak house is:
Sir Scott's Oasis Steakhouse, 204 W. Main, Manhattan, MT 59741(406) 284-6929
If you ever get there, give this fellow a sharp salute, buy a steak, and tip the waitress. Keep passing this on. We should never forget our national traitor!

The protesters claimed that 300 buses from 40 states made the trip. According to greyhounds web-site a motor coach can hold up to 62 persons. That puts attendance from outside of DC at around 18,000.

I remember this account of Terrible Ted and Hanoi Jane trying to bull their way to the head of the line at the steakshouse.

Were there repercussions from Ted? Threats or lawsuits from la Fonda?

Must have been, and unsuccessful, because nothing more was heard of this. Except Ted and Jane divorced soon afterward.

"You're not a man, Ted!!"
