As I read the news day in and day out from my perspective of being on the inside looking out, I look at my own home and couldn't be any more embarrassed than I currently am. It has been compounded from 9/11 by constant images and stories in the media about the actions of the Muslim community.
I must admit to myself if I was on the outside looking in I would probably look at myself in the same way so many others do. If all I saw were nihilistic thugs raping, robbing, murdering, and littering the streets of the world with the bodies of innocent people I wouldn't know what else to think of this group of people for religion.
As I now sit inside of the United States I find myself looking at this house in two perspectives. At times from the inside looking out and wanting to escape for this image that has haunts me day in and day out but also at times from the outside looking in. It is these proud patriotic times when religion takes the passenger seat or well I should say, isn't even in the car, that I look at that house and think, "Don't you people get it???"
At moments like this I realize and force myself to accept the reality that the real problem here is the Muslim community itself. It is no longer the fundamentalsits or Al-Qaeda alone, rather the very community itself that has failed to deliver or even show an attempt to remedy this nihilistic ideology within their ranks. As an American but also as a Muslim I would like to convey my most sincere apologies although I know to most this are just empty words in light of the death and injury of so many. For most we have reached a point where apologies and words will do nothing but further agitate the situation. Rather what is needed is action.
It is this which I do recognize and wish deliver, but I realize that I can only do this with help from others. I would hope that the American people, my brothers and sisters, would not so easily give up on the Bush doctrine of changing the face of the middle east where this dangerous threat to world civility and humanity is found. If we hope to find change I believe we can only find it in the overthrowing and or absolute destruction of the very regimes and elements that support this authoritarinism from within their midst. As long as we hold on to the Bush doctrine I honestly believe that we can one day watch the purple fingers of freedom wave from Morocco to Indonesia.
Until that day, if it comes, I apologize my friends and ask you to stick with the President and his vision for a new middle east.
Actually, according to what I have read, it is perfectly appropriate and acceptable for a muslim to lie or deceive, if it is for the greater good and advancement of Islam. It is simply another strategem in jihad.
A big problem has been the marketing of the war by the administration. Apart from some inconveniences, the homefront just doesn't think and act like we are at war. The admin insisted that we all go about our lives and that everything is ok. It's no surprise that after a couple of years of acting as if no war was going on, people have come to think that there is no war going on.
Asking "Don't you people get it???" is a bit disingenuous when the current admin has gone to some lengths to assure that people don't "get it."
Um, I'm pretty familiar with the Constitution, and it doesn't say we are a nation under God anywhere. Only mention of the Creator is "in the year of our Lord." You must not have any idea about the Constitution.
As far as knowing about Christiantiy, I do, thanks (must be nice to make such a pointed preliminary judgment based on ONE POST on a message board--I wish I were so presumptuous). Jesus said to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's. Obvious compatibility. Christians must live in the world, not of it. Your personal religious choice doesn't affect what citizenship you can claim. Perhaps might make you a moral hypocrite, but doesn't preclude you from citizenship.
Personally, I don't WANT government to have anything to do with religion--the gov't regulates enough without getting into our personal religious practices.

I think it boils down to a key question, as I see it. (Please try to resist flaming me for this, since I DO believe it is entirely appropriate to consider)
The key question is: Can a Muslim be secular and still be considered a muslim?
From what I can tell, to the islamofacists, the answer to that is no...and if the answer is no, your fate is WORSE than being a Christian or a Jew. According to Bernard Lewis, who is a foremost Western authority on Islam, there are a few reasons for Jihad, and he lists them in order of ferocity or degree of prosecution. At the top of the list is...Apostasy. That means it is much worse to be a muslim and either not live by the principles of the prophet or to repudiate them, than it is to be a Christian or Jew. If you are an apostate, there is a special circle of hell reserved for you.
If we can agree there are secular muslims, then this divides the muslim population, and people like edcoil and Brigette Gabriel are unfairly generalizing and grouping the good with the bad. If muslims cannot be secular, then...edcoil and Ms. Gabriel are correct, and we should be looking to our defenses.

To be honest I did not make that remark, I was responding much as you did with words of slander for the one which did.
I haven't said I don't oppose Islamic expansion. I've simply said that a Muslim can be American. It might make them religious hypocrites, but doesn't preclude them from American citizenship. Period. So long as they defend and uphold the Constitution, they can worship however they want.
And I would love for the Caliphate to take over--guess what major changes would happen? No more abortion, no more celebration of homosexuality, no more promiscuity, no more drug abuse, and so on. Liberals are digging their own graves by fighting on behalf of the Islamofascists.

And so you touch to the heart of the issue which baffles many of us.
I believe the answer as to the why revolves around one word: Fear.
Americans, mostly, fear the Rule of Law as retaliation and retribution for misdeeds or anti-social transgressions. It's the structure of our conduct and the basis for our civilization.
Kill a person - go to jail. Simplistic, but it works regardless of religious belief or persuasion. American Christians fear God, and likewise conduct themselves accordingly.
Muslims fear each other. When you know that another member of your own community will murder you, or your family, for even speaking out against atrocities let alone effecting an idealogy change, the priority becomes one of personal survival.
American Muslims place themselves in double jeopardy, particularly where there may be relatives remaining in the Middle East. Most americans don't realize how extensive a geographical network even the most typical Middle Eastern family represents and the opportunities that such exposure presents for reprisal.
Speaking out against the Muslim community, or converting to Christianity here, could result in the injury, or death, to a loved one "over there".
I do have to wonder how many Catholics would speak against the Pope if they faced a similar situation. The courage and risk is immense. Yet, looking at the purple fingers of the Iraq voters I hold hope.
Americans have the right to practice any disciplined, and lawful, religion they wish; your apology reflects, most probably, the feelings of many Muslims who disparage of exercising that freedom in the peaceful way of their own choosing.
I'm not clear as to how you get there over the fanatical element(s), but at least a few of us out here grasp the problem.

Of course you can! That's why our Constitution is so important. This country was founded on the premise that no matter who comes to this nation, that person is free to worship as he or she pleases, or not worship at all. That doesn't mean that anyone can break laws in the name of his or her religion, only that they can worship as they see fit.
My neighbor is a Muslim born Iranian who abandoned his faith, sent his kids to Catholic schools, works hard, is faithful to his wife and is as fine and upstanding American citizen as there can be.
