Tony Snow: Are War Critics in Congress Aiding Al-Qaeda?
Editor & Publisher ^ | Jan. 17, 2007 | E&P Staff

Posted on 01/17/2007 9:02:18 PM PST by FairOpinion

At his White House briefing today, Press Secretary Tony Snow faced a grilling over the Democrats' opposition to the president's troop escalation. He labeled Sen. Hillary Clinton's backing for a "cap" on troops in Iraq at the current 130,000 as "extreme."

But he also suggested that war opponents in congress need to consider what message they are sending in favoring a resolution or legislation that opposes the president's "surge"-- saying it was "worth asking" the question of whether they might sending a message to al-Qaeda. The implication was that their opposition could be seen as giving al-Qaeda a green light to expand their actions.

He raised the al-Qaeda issue again a little later. "It's probably worth asking," Snow said, "what message does Congress intend to give, and who does it think the audience is? Is the audience merely the President? Is it the voting American public? Or in an age of instant communication, is it also al Qaeda? Is it Iraq? Is it players in Iraq? Is it U.S. troops? Is it people in the Gulf who want to understand whether the United States is, in fact, a partner upon whom they can depend for security even in trying times?

"All those are questions that deserve to be raised. I don't think there are illegitimate questions. And all I'm saying is that those are things that members ought to take into consideration."

"Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled, or hanged."
---- Abraham Lincoln

If Helen Thomas was paying attention when she was watching President Lincoln say that she would be singing a different tune. Naturally, even back then she was spinning everything to the left I imagine.

Well, OF COURSE the Senate is giving aid, encouragement and comfort to Al Quaeda. Some Senators are simply pompous poseurs willfully ignorant of the speed and effectiveness of global media. But others--the likes of Durbin, Leahy, Kennedy, Levin, Boxer, Schumer, Feingold--are clearly invested in a humiliating strategic defeat for the United States in Iraq. They have no real love or special feeling for this country. And they hate Bush--largely because he's perceived to be a believing Christian--and believe he will be tagged with the defeat.

Why not ask Prime Minister Maliki as he says, Give us guns and troops can go

He also says, “I wish that we could receive strong messages of support from the US so we don’t give some boost to the terrorists and make them feel that they might have achieved success. I believe that such statements give moral boosts to the terrorists and push them towards making an extra effort and making them believe that they have defeated the American Administration, but I can tell you that they haven’t defeated the Iraqi Government.”

Perhaps he sees the handwriting on the wall?

Thanks for posting those words! I have a book I think it is called Night Falls on Philadephia -- think I need to read it again and be reminded of what those founders of this Nation had to say.

America for so long had a sense of security from foreign threats with protection two oceans on her border. Well, it never was the case, since even our Founders knew long ago that it was only a short sail for Britain, France or Spain to come on over and lay waste to the new Republic.

You don't know, do you, that even after he was re-elected, Lincoln had the Radical Republicans upbraiding him. telling him he was not doing the right things. The evening after Lee's surrender, Lincoln gave an odd speech to crowds looking for a rousing victory speech, only to be disappointed because he was talking about Reconstruction policy. After he was killed, they were hard-pressed to keep from celebrating, because they thought that Johnson was one of them.
