U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter will go south to formally launch his bid for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

Roy Tyler, the El Cajon Republican's communications director for the effort, said Tuesday that the announcement will take place Jan. 25 at a $250-a-plate breakfast at a Marriott hotel in Spartanburg, S.C.

"Congressman Hunter will speak about a new American sunrise of opportunity, faith and freedom," according to an invitation for the event.

Hunter, 58, announced in San Diego in early November that he was considering a run for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, keying on national security, immigration and border security issues.

Last week, Hunter filed his formal paperwork with the Federal Election Commission, establishing the Hunter for President Exploratory Committee and naming longtime supporter Bruce Young of San Diego as his treasurer.

Yeah, but he didn't serve in Senate capacity so he didn't have what you might think is 'illustrious', better experience in being a "Senator". His governmental experience was as a congressman! Hunter is better qualified than Hillary and Obama, period. And he would be an awesome candidate who would show their vulnerabilities.

Maybe he is running now due to 9/11? Did it occur to you that our country is in dire straights? And Hunter is solid as a rock on defense. He is also hampered from being in California and SHOULD NOT be wasted on the liberal mindlessness of that state, like Rick Santorum was. And while he continues to hold a prominent position as chairman and now ranking member of the armed services committee, it's important to know that he is going to have a heads up on many of these issues. Get over the "he's only a congressman" BS. The time is now as we are at a serious point in our nation's history and safety.

Can you tell me, besides the illegal immigration issue(which Duncan Hunter himself has long been an advocate against) what the heads up is about Tancredo to you? I really don't think he has a chance in the general election due to his foot in mouth. Frankly, he's tactless at times. Hunter is heads up and just as vocal as Tancredo. But Hunter has the benefit of being the chairman and now ranking member of the armed services committee and has specialized in defense matters. It's also important to remember that Hunter is NOT subject to "chicken hawk" claims as he is a decorated Vietnam war vet with a son who served in Iraq(his own son backed up his father's record on the war by fighting in it). Tancredo is subject to the fact he did not serve and when you watch the two, Hunter just comes across better. Tancredo should have stayed out of it. He came in after Hunter and Hunter has those issues covered and MORE. But now how about splitting the vote? Stupid. Hunter remains better all-around candidate like I say.

It has to get out that Hunter has the personal story/experience with his and his son's military service, a successful marriage and the politics and way he communicates. People need to keep an open mind and watch and listen for him and I think he is clearly the best of the conservatives that would make an extremely strong general election candidate.

THE TABLE, Take a look and give me your input. As you can see "real state" is an issue...So we'll have to find the way to keep it as compact as possible! :) - I can make it smaller but then you might not be able to read it... input, input!

We need to do more than just preach to the choir, and that's the point. Duncan Hunter must truly be the choice of as close to 100% of conservative voters as is humanly possible throughout the U.S. to even have a chance of victory in '08. Also, past history is very unkind to the chances for victory for any Presidential candidate running from the U.S. House of Representatives who hasn't also been a Governor at some point in their past. Rep. Hunter also has a long history of liking to spend monies on pork barrel projects, and many other voters will also have problems with Hunter on his positions on trade issues. Hunter has his own weaknesses that he truly needs to fully and successfully resolve with the majority of U.S. conservative voters to even have a serious chance for victory in '08. Right now, Hunter has zero chance for victory. Hunter needs to successfully improve on his chances now while it's still early in the '08 political season.

imVho, being PLAIN-SPOKEN & "being not much of a politician" is one of the STRENGTHS of Tom.

"tactless" can be a GOOD THING, especially when dealing with the LEFTISTS!!! i simply want a "NO hogwash", TRUTHFUL person for POTUS.

frankly, i know LITTLE about Hunter, other than he is on the armed services committee & is a RVN vet.

can you tell me in 500 words or less WHY he is a better candidate than Tom & IF he is one who is likely to act in MY interest & in the interest of MY family, community, county, state & nation??? Tom has spoken to the SCV in SC and (like most westerners)he is a supporter of dixie!!!

specifically, is Hunter solidly PRO-life, PRO-2d Amendment,PRO-school prayer,anti-federal government interference in local affairs, tightfisted in spending MY $$$$$,stopping intrusions into MY life & that of MY family,anti-taxation, etc???

Hard to overcome, but not impossible.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

With a fine name like Duncan Hunter he has absolutely no chance. He needs to change it to something like Bear Rack Osama Ramalamadingdongbompshabomp.

I will say Hunter is very outspoken as well but I really think Tancredo can just say the dumbest things. That comment about Miami was tactless and not a good thing when that Cuban community votes GOP many times and is needed to deliver Florida to our column. I stand by what I say when Hunter has Tancredo on the illegal immigration and more. He's a solid man with a strong persona. Great guy who people will be impressed with when they see him. A Commander In Chief. There are numerous threads you can pull up for Duncan Hunter in search on Free Republic. I have a link for the "Duncan Hunter on the issues" thread. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes on all your issues. But I guess many can wait and see during the campaign.

you're welcome to your opinion.

frankly, your post does NOTHING to make me (or likely anyone else) think that Hunter is in ANY way superior to TON TANCREDO.

fact.

You're entitled to your opinion as well, but tell me where Tancredo is better than Hunter? Why didn't Tancredo serve his country? What issue does Tancredo have over Hunter? How well does Tancredo come across vs. Hunter? I'll be supporting Hunter.

Tancredo can work on tact. And stuttering as he did on Neil Cavuto.

Maybe not, but he's miles closer to Tancredo than Romney or the others, without Tancredo's unfortunate single-issue baggage.

I like your guy Tancredo. Uncompromising principle. I just worry that he's dug himself too deep a hole. So I'll give you the same lecture other FReepers are always giving Hunter supporters: Consider electability. Hunter is a guy you could actually be HAPPY with and who could WIN. Can you say both of those are true of Rudy?

I'll try to answer your questions::

Life

Not only is Duncan Hunter pro-life, he introduced HR-579, the "Right to Life Act" in 2005.

Second Amemdment

Hunter supports the Second Amendment.

Education

Hunter's record on education. (He supported school prayer during the war at least, don't know beyond that but that alone is a very good start.)

He is pro-family.

He sponsored the original fence south of San Diego - the selfsame fence that is to be extended 700 miles east. He is hugely against beaurocracy and waste. And he's very, very tough on China - something NOBODY seems to be willing to discuss yet a very real thread I've recognized for years.

Fence Ad

Footbsll analogy ad

Chinese Submarine ad

I've given you a lot of answers here, sourced. It's up to you to decide, in your own heart, who has the best chance of winning AND will do what is right. Duncan Hunter is an excellent candidate to that end. Give him a chance.

It happened in 18 hundred something, so who knows, he may pull it off.

Not happened since James Garfield, election of 1880. Garfield had the advantage of being the Speaker of the House.

True enough. This upcoming cycle, however, provides good storm conditions for an unknown: everyone I know either dislikes or hates the default nominee (McCain) and the others are out of step with the base on several key issues. Adding those weighting factors to the mix, I'd give a Hunter a better chance this cycle than in any other one in recent American electoral history.

It's going to depend on him, his campaign management, and early supporters.
