U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter will go south to formally launch his bid for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

Roy Tyler, the El Cajon Republican's communications director for the effort, said Tuesday that the announcement will take place Jan. 25 at a $250-a-plate breakfast at a Marriott hotel in Spartanburg, S.C.

"Congressman Hunter will speak about a new American sunrise of opportunity, faith and freedom," according to an invitation for the event.

Hunter, 58, announced in San Diego in early November that he was considering a run for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, keying on national security, immigration and border security issues.

Last week, Hunter filed his formal paperwork with the Federal Election Commission, establishing the Hunter for President Exploratory Committee and naming longtime supporter Bruce Young of San Diego as his treasurer.

What did he say? I'm sorry I missed that because I had it on a little this morning but didn't hear about him being on the program.

"I'm contributing to his campaign, however, and hope to be able to volunteer for him in the metro Atlanta area."

Great! This is what gets people elected, not sitting around whining about name recognition or electability.

In general his support for the war and reminded the public he authored the bill to put up the fence in San Diego past the major border crossing and we need this further.
Also China and their cheep labor taking away jobs from Americans.

The man seem ok, but there are severe limitations.

1. He is only a Representitive.
2. Can't win his home state in the electoral college.
3. Known only, as of now, to political junkies.

It happened in 18 hundred something, so who knows, he may pull it off.

I don't think it's ever happened.

James Garfield? Also, Lincoln was a mere "Congressman". We haven't ever had a female or black president either. And what makes you think Hillary or Obama would have more on Duncan Hunter? He would destroy them in debates. That is what I would love to see!

"I wish I lived in South Carolina, but I'm stuck in worthless NY"

Politics aside, I wouldn't want to live anywhere in the world other than "worthless NY".

That rapidly expanding field thing makes me more than nervous. That field needs to be narrowed down before the primary season begins. I believe that conservatives need to make a decision and d### soon. We can ill afford to have primary season come and have all the conservatives on Free Republic bickering over which of the 6-8 conservatives will be the best.

Would it be terribly difficult to have a straw poll of our own here on FR? The goal being to, at least, narrow the field somewhat, if not come up with one candidate we could all get behind.

I sure as h### will not let the media decide who the candidates will be. Some say that Hunter has no name recognition. MCCain on the other hand has great name recognition. He should have, the MSM seem to love the SOB. Name recognition will come with success. But we cannot possibly elect a half-dozen candidates

..It would be interesting to create a chart of candidates and their positions. I believe that would help the conservative base rapidly filter out candidates that they have problems with and wont support...

You know that is great idea!... I could help with that. We know we have a good candidate here and he is worth the trouble imo.

Someone already mentioned a "Thread," I heard the term a million times but I don't' know exactly what it is. Is it like a PERMANENT HOME POST... A place where you could set shop and have our discussions without intruding into other's people threads? Our own "kingdom" so to speak :)... where we can invite everyone to have civil friendly exchanges, but with the understanding that pushing for Duncan? (we "reserve" the right to control the table "scores or grades?")... etc

We could create a "committee" of 3 or 4 smart people here and agree on scores and comments on the table... huh?

Garfield might be the exception. He was appointed as Senator at the time but hadn't been sworn in, so I'm unclear on his actual status.

But he was a prominent House member prior to 1880, so it probably counts as a precedent.

Hunter may do fine. That would be unusual. Most candidates from the House end up like Patsy Schroeder or Dennis Kucinich. It's not even a statewide platform to launch from. It's a district.

We'll see. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does.

Not a bad idea. However, Duncan Hunter or whomever could win the straw poll handily here among FReepers, and I'm thinking very few who support others would get behind them. So many of them would rather lose, while bragging about voting for their particular one percenter or whatever.

As a female type what do you think of Hunter's potential with attracting voters. I have yet to see him speak even on video.

Dear ElPatriota,

Great table.

However, I don't know if you can give an A on gun issues to a man who supports that assault weapons ban (Mr. Romney). I know a lot of folks would give him an F for that alone. But he did loosen things up for being able to get a gun in Massachusetts (so I've read), so I guess I'd give him as much as a C-.
