Today's deepest division is between those political observers who believe that Rudy Giuliani is a credible contender for the Republican presidential nomination and those who think that his chances are no better than those of California Rep. Duncan Hunter.
~snip~
Giuliani's strong showing in GOP polling reflects his celebrity status and the reputation he earned after the terrorist attacks. But if and when he becomes a candidate, that will change. He will be evaluated on the basis of different things, including his past and current positions and behavior, and he'll be attacked by critics and opponents. A Giuliani nomination would also generate a conservative third-party candidate in the general election and tear the GOP apart, thereby undercutting Giuliani's electability argument.
So, the former mayor might make a terrific general election candidate, but I don't see how he can get there as a Republican.

Can you spell Edwards?
I'm thinking that maybe its time for the Republicans to fade away. I'm firmly in Rudy's camp. It's either him or Hillary. Pick your poison.
Ah yes, the cry of the unappeasable Right.
Why settle for half a pie when you could have none.
Bush is a social Conservative. He lacks fiscal Conservatism.
When you believe that Illegal Aliens are the front line issue, you are living in a bubble.
The front line issue in the REAL World is, #1., The Iraq War. #2 the economy, #3. The environment, while the Illegal issue is not even in the top 5. (This was taken from memory of an exit poll last December. But the top issues were clearly not Illegal immigrants.)
Ah yes, the cry of the unappeasable Right.

Rudy is charismatic and a good administrator and leader but not Presidential in his character. Aside from his politics. Rudy would make a good FEMA chief.
He plays well with others while they kick the shit out of him.
You appear to be terminally cynical...
A vote for Rudy as president is no different than a vote for any other liberal. We'll just get more liberalism. It's a lose/lose situation.
You're right. Rudy would be perfect for FEMA, though. That's where his strength is.
Infidelity in marriage is a knockout factor that I have applied to candidates since I began voting in 1972. I still hold to this infidelity litmus test because I believe it is a valid indicator of the character and trustworthiness in all other aspects of a mans life. It certainly proved to be a true indication of Clinton's bad character.
I cant support Rudy Giuliani in the Primary for this reason among others. I would vote for Rudy in the general election if he is the GOP nominee.
Many here appear willing to morph the Republican Party into a new, more modern version of the Democratic Party just to elect a "rock star" celebrity. He was a good mayor and did a good job for a liberal city like NY.
However, when it comes to national politics, Rudy would never, ever get my vote.

FLOP-A-ROONIE Rudy
His kind of conservatism might play in NY, but I don't see it playing in the midwest (outside of Chicago), or the south.
He's toast.
Hang it up Rudy!!
Some people just don't want a liberal form of government. They want liberalism removed and Conservatism reinforced.
Why would a Conservative vote for a liberal politician just because there's a letter of the alphabet after his name? It doesn't make sense. He's still just another liberal.
We shall see what happens in the early primaries.
Illegals coming into Northeastern (and other) states and depressing wages IS an economic issue. Porous borders is a security issue. You can figure out what a flood of immigrants flooding north with large families means for the environment from the point of view of, say, New Englanders. We in California are used to it, but they are shocked.
A flop...
I'll agree but add another important point...as a matter of fact, I'd make it #2 behind terrorism/Iraq...supreme court nominations.
Everyone that says they could not vote for Rudy and will stay home ignores that one of the most important things the next POTUS will do is nominate at least two USSC justices that will affect the court for years.
Rudy has said he's in favor of strict constructionists...I'll tka my chances with him over any Democrat.
The abortion issue is settled by the courts, not the POTUS...so ignoring Rudy for his personal opinion about abortion is short-sighted.
