The Federal Way School Board Tuesday night put the brakes on schools showing Al Gores global warming movie, An Inconvenient Truth. The board required that an opposing view be presented in order for teachers to present the film. Board president Ed Barney said hes received about a half-dozen complaints from parents that their child was taking the film as fact after viewing it at school.
We have to ensure that our schools are not being used to politically indoctrinate anyone, said board member Dave Larson. The board voted 3 to 0, with two members absent.
In An Inconvenient Truth, the former U.S. vice president is shown presenting a slide show around the country on the catastrophic dangers of climate change and his crusade to combat it. A number of the nations top climate scientists have given the film high marks for scientific accuracy.
But Larson pointed out two articles presenting counter-views. One is by journalist and author John Stossel, who writes that many scientists laugh at doomsday predictions by Gore and other environmentalists. Some scientists, Stossel writes, say the result of global warming may be benign.
Barney said the film has been shown at some high schools in the Federal Way School District, and one middle school wants to present it. Barney said he doesnt know if an opposing view was presented.
Larson stressed the district needs to follow its policy requiring that an opposing view be presented when a controversial issue is examined in school.
The board has courted controversy in the past with some of its restrictions. In June, it considered banning flip-flops but backed off after an outcry.
In regard to Gores film, the board approved a three-part motion:
An Inconvenient Truth cant be shown unless Superintendent Tom Murphy is satisfied an opposing view also will be explained.
Murphy will report back to the board on Jan. 23 about how many schools have shown the film and whether an opposing view was presented adequately.
If the film was shown without a counter-view, plans must be developed and carried out to present that other view.
The counter-view wouldnt have to be given at the same time the movie is shown or be as long as the movie, Murphy said. He said he will strive to make sure the boards policy is followed.
Murphy said he has not seen the film.
In commie-socialist WA state also!!!! WOW!!
About time some PC BS comes back on them.
"Fair and balanced in academia?"
It's the school board that is trying to be fair. They are not professional educators, so they lack the same standards as the pros have.
You know -- the standards of prostitutes: pros.
Any reasonable person in academia has to be offended by the way the Green-Weenies are attempting to stifle all opposition to their created "truth" by comparing people with legitimate differences of opinion with Holocaust deniers.
The counter-view wouldnt have to be given at the same time the movie is shown or be as long as the movie, Murphy said.
the school board has decided the opposing view will be held at 3 a.m. saturday on the 2nd tuesday of next week at an undisclosed location..parents and children should make arrangments to be there..
WA state ping (hi kids!!!)
Who got "Muzzled"? Only to a lefty is the introduction of an opposing viewpoint "muzzling" somebody.
Hehe, that's good.
"...Besides we are looking at expanding the 'condoms at school' program, extending Black History Month to 12 weeks, and exploring the 'Myth of the Holocaust.' There just simply isn't enough room for Al Gore."
He betrayed this country. He played on our fears.
What do you expect? Liberals like Tim Robbins go on Larry King and tell millions of people that he's been silenced.

My son was shown this move (get ready for it)....in algebra class.
F'ing unreal. I am having discussions with the school board and principal about it now.
So they've banned Gore and Kerry.
