FNC's 'Beltway Boys' Call GOP Anti-Illegal Immigration Stand 'Dumbest Move' of 2006

FNC's 'Beltway Boys' Call GOP Anti-Illegal Immigration Stand 'Dumbest Move' of 2006

Posted by Tim Graham on January 3, 2007 - 14:59.

Just to prove that Fox News Channel doesn't live up to the liberal stereotype of Music to Conservative Ears, angry E-mailers are demanding someone denounce Fred Barnes and Morton Kondracke for slamming conservatives who staunchly oppose illegal immigration. In their year-end Beltway Boys "awards show" this weekend, there was this clip of agreement:

Kondracke: "Our 'Dumbest Move' award of the year is Republicans trashing immigrants. And this - this has disastrous consequences for the, in the election. The Hispanic vote, which is the fastest-growing element of the population, went 55 to 42 percent Democratic in 2004. This time, it went 76 to 26. And it's all because of this stupid wall that the House Republicans wanted to build, and rejected their own president's plan for a comprehensive immigrant reform in preference to cozying up to radio talk show hosts."

Barnes: "I don't think it's the wall, per se. I think it's their whole attitude toward immigrants in general, but particularly Hispanic immigrants. It seemed mean-spirited, and, you know, American voters are generally not mean-spirited. You, you're going to have some kind of a wall at some point, but you have to a lot of other things, too."

Kondracke: "Yes. The wall only is the problem."

Later, the Beltway Boys also slammed CNN's Lou Dobbs:

Kondracke: "‘Blowhard of the Year’ award goes to CNN's Lou Dobbs. Now this is a guy who also could qualify for Turncoat of the Year."

Barnes: "Yes."

Kondracke: "When he used to be a cheerleader for capitalism and for corporate America. Now he is a demagogue, it amounts for populists and potectionists and xenophobes. And he doesn't have any answers."

Barnes: "And he's wrong. You know, the fact is, the rolling up our borders and pulling out of the globalized economy is a way to achieve one thing: a lower standard of living."

Kondracke: "Yes. Poverty. Yes, exactly. Absolutely."

Kondracke has a really personal problem here ~ he needs low wage illegals to work in his home 24/7; he's also usually too drunk to mow his own grass too.

Where did you read that Kondrake is a drunk?

Actually I agree. Not the stand so much; as the vitriol and lame ideas as to how to deal with it. Did not help guesting the Mayors or whomever; who literally have locked their cities up or trying to. . .and coverage of 'law-abiding' illegals getting the boot out of house and home.

Would have first promised a campaign to send home or to jail and both eventually; all illegals who are engaged in 'gang' activity. . .those who commit any criminal offenses - beyond their being here. Those who cannot prove 'gainful'; honest employment since their arrival. . .Would have initiated more requirements for citizenship. . .

That would have taken us up to the Election; we would have been doing something positive for 'crime control' as well as the threatening if not dangerous elements of the illegal population. . .

Post Election; we could have moved on more comprehensive measures; that will now not happen anyway. ..because: 'hellllo Nancy' and Demrats et al!

Persoanlly was disgusted at the bumbling, fumbling of the Repubs; who are not racist. ..but easy to appear as such; especially when they put the light on themselves in such a negataive way.

I doubt he mows his own grass. . .but not for that reason.

Think as a Lib, Mort does a great job; he is more often on 'our' side than not; but it is not painful to listen to his 'counter' opinions; as it is with many others.

Can we not be fai here; if we only want to listen to our 'own'; fine. . .just turn off the TV. . .and write/read your own blogs. . .Talk to yourself!

Mort; is a fine person; not a screaming; irrational Leftie; he is always respectful. Think he deserves that back; and especially from people here. . .lest we sound like a conservative spin-off of DU. . .

I had never heard that Mort is an alcoholic, or to quote muawiyah, a "drunk." Mort went through a lot of grief with his wife who had Parkinson's, and possibly he drank more than he should have, but I never heard anything about it before muawiyah posted it. IMO it was unfair for someone to post this without proof.

Agree; and even further. . .unfair to post this as a 'slap' against someone we know to be a decent person. Unfair. . .and unwarrented.

It's nice to see so many thoughtful comments from other Freepers on this thread. Thank you all for saving me from what I thought would be a bumper-sticker-slogan celebration of bigotry disguised as conservatism.

You're most welcome, John David. Although I can't post often, I like to make it count when I do. :)

...reading the rest of the replies on this thread the usual hyerticals are their same old selves.

You are so very welcome, Dane. Truly. :)

As for the hysterics, they will be ever thus. They are a very old type in politics. Here in the U.S., we can trace the current batch to at least the Father Coughlin populist movement of the 1930's. The thing of it is, many of these people run around trumpeting how they are the "real" conservatives, when they are nothing of the kind.

Raybbr, you are so typical of the dishonest, weak-thinking hysterics of whom we see too much on FR these days. You pull two paragraphs from somewhere other than what I actually said, then make a wild-assed assumption about what I "must" believe.

...... talking about immigration inexorably turns off hispanics. .....The Republicans should have been taking care of the border issue without fanfare, instead of ignoring the problem until there is public outcry.

Bingo.

The Republicans (aka the "Party of the Stupid") let the Democrats (aka "The Evil Party"), take away this immigration issue and run the other way for a game-winning TD. In the meantime, Tancredo (a colorful and loyal back bencher with an excellent point or two to make), who could have been effectively listened to 5 years ago, has been thoroughly demonized, the country has been irretrievably latino-ized, and the official (as opposed to the faithful) Republican Party is back home where I claim it actually prefers to be, i.e., doing business as usual from the loser's side of the aisle, ably protecting those who pay for its upkeep.

Call me cynical, but if the Republicans are the party of the businessman, why would they so shamefully neglect the advertising and PR (i.e. The Corporate Communications) aspects of the party's business? The official Republican party abandoned the field on the immigration issue because they like it exactly the way it is.

There will be no immigration reform. When the Latinos become the country's largest recognizable demographic, what exactly might be left to reform?

You know, I don't know a single real person who isn't fed up with illegal immigration, and this includes liberals and conservatives.

Me too. And I mean everyone, from my peeps to the apolitical to the Bushitleregime mumblers to my friends of Mexican descent.

That there are a plethora of defenders in the media doesn't surprise me at all, of course...

bigotry disguised as conservatism

Undeniably, and most unfortunately, there is a fair-to-middling-sized streak of bigotry and good old American xenophobia in the anti-illegal immigration camp.

This minor facet of the anti-illegal immigration movement has, also undeniably and unfortunately, been used to effectively cripple it. It is a major reason why real "immigration reform" is a non-starter.
