FNC's 'Beltway Boys' Call GOP Anti-Illegal Immigration Stand 'Dumbest Move' of 2006

Posted by Tim Graham on January 3, 2007 - 14:59.

Just to prove that Fox News Channel doesn't live up to the liberal stereotype of Music to Conservative Ears, angry E-mailers are demanding someone denounce Fred Barnes and Morton Kondracke for slamming conservatives who staunchly oppose illegal immigration. In their year-end Beltway Boys "awards show" this weekend, there was this clip of agreement:

Kondracke: "Our 'Dumbest Move' award of the year is Republicans trashing immigrants. And this - this has disastrous consequences for the, in the election. The Hispanic vote, which is the fastest-growing element of the population, went 55 to 42 percent Democratic in 2004. This time, it went 76 to 26. And it's all because of this stupid wall that the House Republicans wanted to build, and rejected their own president's plan for a comprehensive immigrant reform in preference to cozying up to radio talk show hosts."

Barnes: "I don't think it's the wall, per se. I think it's their whole attitude toward immigrants in general, but particularly Hispanic immigrants. It seemed mean-spirited, and, you know, American voters are generally not mean-spirited. You, you're going to have some kind of a wall at some point, but you have to a lot of other things, too."

Kondracke: "Yes. The wall only is the problem."

Later, the Beltway Boys also slammed CNN's Lou Dobbs:

Kondracke: "‘Blowhard of the Year’ award goes to CNN's Lou Dobbs. Now this is a guy who also could qualify for Turncoat of the Year."

Barnes: "Yes."

Kondracke: "When he used to be a cheerleader for capitalism and for corporate America. Now he is a demagogue, it amounts for populists and potectionists and xenophobes. And he doesn't have any answers."

Barnes: "And he's wrong. You know, the fact is, the rolling up our borders and pulling out of the globalized economy is a way to achieve one thing: a lower standard of living."

Kondracke: "Yes. Poverty. Yes, exactly. Absolutely."

Neither Santelli nor O'Hara gathered together with hundreds of thousands of their European brethren ,tied up traffic all day long in major American cities

Ever seen old photos of the Lower East Side? Check out "How the Other Half Lives" by Jacob Riis.

BTW: O'Hara spit on and discriminated against Santelli. It annoys me when people put the "Irish and Italians" True Italians have more in common with Colombians than they do with the "Oi-Rish." ;-)

"Kondracke: "Our 'Dumbest Move' award of the year is Republicans trashing immigrants."

I don't recall any elected republican candidates "trashing immigrants". I believe poor ol' mort is just confused.

But from what we have seen just on the first day, the Democrats are going to make sure that the GOP never sees the light of day for quite some time to come.

Absolutely.

You know, I don't know a single real person who isn't fed up with illegal immigration, and this includes liberals and conservatives. It's odd that I see so many defend it on the internet and in the media.....

Kondracke has a really personal problem here ~ he needs low wage illegals to work in his home 24/7; he's also usually too drunk to mow his own grass too.

Aside from the fact that Mort and Fred are right on target in lambasting the whole loaf or none true blue real conservatives for their bone headed disloyalty to the President, Mort is a decent fellow and is not a drunk.

"I hope they push some immigration bill through Congress this year so we can put this issue behind us."

Talk about naive.

Barnes' and Kondracke's take on illegals is the single reason I stopped watching both "Beltway Boys" and the roundtable on "Brit Hume" a few months back. Anybody who holds such open-borders, pro-illegal views is somebody I refuse to trust on any other matter.

America is being sold out right under our noses.

I want to see Barnes' and Kondracke's 1040's. I suspect that they (especially Barnes) are the recipients of significant "consulting" and "speaking" fees from OBL groups. On this issue, Barnes asks more like a paid lobbyist than a conservative pundit.

Uhhhh....I was THINKING about "How the Other Half Lives " when I spontaneously conjured all that....I was referring to the recent Illegal , mostly Mexican "show of strength/force" in Los ANgeles and elsewhere.Remember that?
How do you equate bustling immigrants crowding the tenements of New York City with the scenarios we all saw but a few months ago in streets all over America? I covered ALL that with the observation that, indeed, the "baptism" all our forebears from Europe underwent was starting at the bottom of the pecking order, and getting spit on (Continuing the
"water" motif of baptism.)

True, but we now live in an age of mass media and cheap air travel. Its more difficult to "control" the culture as it was 100 years ago.

Enforce our immigration laws. That's all I ask for. The rest will take care of itself.

Suspecting that Barnes' love of illegal immigration might have something to do with his speaking and consulting fees, I put "Fred Barnes" + "Association" in Google, and readily came up with speaking engagements at meetings of the following usual OBL suspects.

American Composites Manufacturers Association

National Restaurant Association

Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association

National Association of Manufacturers

This record demonstrates that Barnes is getting significant $$$ for speaking to these groups, and is likely getting hidden $$$ for "consulting". He acts like a paid mouthpiece, and probably is.

Dane, I often find you as the lone Freeper injecting some pragmatism and humanity on these immigration threads. I was writing this to respond to a different post, but then I came across Wolfstar's post at 126 and he said it better than I.
I want to say that I've been following your many posts on these types of threads for some time. You are to be applauded for your perseverance, clarity of thought, and courage in often taking on the hysterics and haters by yourself. I only wish my time were more flexible so I could pitch right in there with you.

The rest was spot on also Wolfstar.

It's nice to see so many thoughtful comments from other Freepers on this thread. Thank you all for saving me from what I thought would be a bumper-sticker-slogan celebration of bigotry disguised as conservatism.

"The immigration blowhards on FR could have gotten behind a good bill such as Kyl/Coryn, but noooooooooo, that was "shamnesty"."

That wasn't a good bill and yes, it was an amnesty.

Huh. They kept bashing the Republicans for opposing "immigrants". Not "illegal aliens", but "immigrants". Not even "illegal immigrants". Just "immigrants".

Barnes and Kondrake are slimy. I think they are washed up anyway.
Fox clearly needs new blood on 'Beltway Boys'. They gotta do better than those two clowns.

John

Thanks for clarifying your argument.

You consider people who believe that we should not legalize millions of illegal immigrants as bigots; fine use that if you must. Do not confuse a racist with a bigot.

However, we could do alot more of 'bigotry'. Consider, the millions of 'bigots' around the world who reject Islamic terrorism and stand up to fight it, also the millions of people who believe in smaller gov't, that our rights come from God, not man, that the US is the greatest country in the world, we are a Republic, not a Democracy, and on and on.

These principles, do make us 'bigots', for we believe those principles are the greatest of things and have no faith in lesser ideas or reasons.

The law is the law, illegals should not be here, if you cannot see that then, well your a 'bigot' in your own right.
