"Philippines militant 'shot dead'"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Abu Sulaiman, also known as Jainal Antal Sali, was fatally wounded in a clash with soldiers on the southern island of Jolo, the army's chief said.

Sulaiman had a $5m bounty placed on his head by the US, in part for the 2001 abduction of a group of tourists on the island of Palawan.

The kidnapping resulted in the deaths of two Americans and several others.

Sulaiman is also believed to have been involved in the bombing of a passenger ferry in the central Philippines in 2004, which killed at least 100 people."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Abu Sayyaf is thought to have links with both al-Qaeda and the regional militant group Jemaah Islamiah, and has been blamed for a number of kidnappings and bombings in the region.

Late last month, the military said the head of the group, Khaddafy Janjalani, might have been killed in September, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Like Sulaiman, Khaddafy Janjalani - the younger brother of Abu Sayyaf founder Abdurajak Abubakar Janjalani - is also on a US wanted list."

Ali Sayyid Muhamed Mustafa al-Bakri, better known as Abd al-Aziz al-Masri, is an al Qaeda member and expert on explosives and chemical weapons.

He is a member of the al Qaeda Shura (leadership) council and is a close associate of al Qaeda leaders Sayf al-Adl, Khalid Shaykh Muhammad, and Dr. Ayman Zawahiri.

Prior to joining al Qaeda, al-Bakri was a member of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad terrorist group, under the direction of Ayman Zawahiri.

He served as an instructor in al Qaeda’s camps in Afghanistan, providing terrorist recruits with training in the use of explosives and chemical weapons.

Al-Bakri also unsuccessfully attempted to hijack a Pakistani Air passenger flight in December, 2000. It is highly probable that he continues to train al Qaeda terrorists and other extremists.

UPDATE:

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=nation_world&id=4960767

"Details emerge about possible terror threat"

January 22, 2007 -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Sources tell ABC News that the plot may have involved moving between 10 and 20 suspects believed to be affiliated with al Qaeda in Iraq into the United States with student visas -- the same method used by the 19 al Qaeda terrorists who struck American targets on Sept. 11.

U.S. officials now require universities to closely track foreign nationals who use student visas to study in the United States. University officials must report international students who fail to arrive on campus or miss class regularly.

In August, the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement alerted intelligence agencies and state and local law enforcement about 11 Egyptian students who had failed to report to their classes at Montana State University. The students were ultimately apprehended.

Still, despite the heightened precautions, some security analysts fear that skilled terrorists -- handpicked because of their clean records and because they are carefully trained -- could still slip through an academic setting."

Leaders of banned Islamic group arrested across Kazakhstan

The Associated Press - January 26, 2007 - ALMATY, Kazakhstan:

Kazakhstan's security service has made a series of arrests among suspected leaders of a banned radical Islamic group across the ex-Soviet republic over the past two months, authorities said Friday.
The arrests were made in several regions and targeted an unspecified number of national and local leaders and activists from Hizb-ut-Tahrir, National Security Committee said in a statement.

Security officers also seized 25,000 extremist leaflets and 700 books, the statement said.

It was unclear why the security service was releasing the information Friday; security officials could not be reached for further comment.

Turkey detains 14 suspected Hizb ut-Tahrir members

DATELINE: ISTANBUL Dec 24 - Agence France Presse - English:

Turkish anti-terror police said Saturday they had detained 14 people suspected of being members of the outlawed Hizb ut-Tahrir group which is accused of undermining the secular system in this mainly Muslim country.
Police found thousands of leaflets and booklets explaining the groups's cause in the suspects' homes and offices in Istanbul which they believe were used to attract new sympathisers and members, a police statement, carried by the Anatolia news agency, said.

It added that the suspects were transferred to an Istanbul court to be questioned by the local prosecutor.

"Radical cleric calls for Islamic utopia"
Sunday Jan 28 16:58 AEDT

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A radical Muslim cleric has urged hundreds of supporters meeting in Sydney's south-west to join a global push to create an Islamic utopia.

Indonesian firebrand cleric Ismail Yusanto outlined his plan for instituting Sharia law, the absolute form of Islam, to a crowd of about 500 people gathered at the Khilafah Conference in Lakemba.

The meeting was organised by the Australian arm of the extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir, a group widely known for its anti-democratic, anti-Semitic views.

The group believes that it can reduce suffering around the globe by introducing Sharia law and creating an Islamic utopia.

The NSW government has called on the Commonwealth to follow several European and Middle Eastern countries and ban the group.

Dr Yusanto called on followers to denounce capitalism, warning that if Islam was not followed in his Islamic super-state, jihad would follow."
