:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad: Strategic Thinking Needed
-Full Story-

The United States of America has some of the smartest leaders in government, military, and business in the world. Yet the American government has failed to collectively use this formidable brain-power 5+ years after the attack by Jihadists on the American homeland to develop a truly strategic plan to fight the global threat of Jihad and Islamist extremism. In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

...“as soon as people see Arabic, they immediately make an association with terrorism.”

Well, when arabs repeatedly commit acts of terrorism one does come to the conclusion that 1+1=2. Besides, this is America and our language is english.

The hijacking of the Sudanese domestic airliner has ended with the Sudanese hijacker seeking asylum from the French embassy, an airline official said on Wednesday. "The plane has landed ... the hijacker was met by the French ambassador and all the passengers are safe," said Ahmed Salih, commercial director of Air West in Sudan.

Envelope containing mystery powder delivered to St. Lucie home (Florida)
January 24, 2007

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — An incorrectly-addressed envelope believed to have some sort of powder inside of it was delivered to a home in the 7700 block of Westmont Drive, according to a sheriff's report. The homeowners reported the envelope, addressed to "Lifetime Guarantee" with the same address as their Fort Pierce home, felt as if "it contained unknown powdery substance" that could possibly be anthrax powder when they got their mail Monday evening, the report stated. They did not open it.

Instead, they put it in a plastic bag and called authorities, who then sent the contents to a lab for testing. The envelope had Portugal mailing stamps on it, but did not have a return address. The homeowners did not know what Lifetime Guarantee was or who, if anyone, owned it. There is no business in St. Lucie County with that name.

Police destroy suspicious device at Ohlone (California)
Authorities say they are still unsure of what explosive is
01/24/2007

FREMONT — A suspicious device found at Ohlone College was destroyed by the county bomb squad Monday afternoon, but authorities have not yet been able to determine exactly what it was, police said.

The device, which looked a like soup can wrapped in duct tape with an M-80 firework sticking out of it, was spotted about 1:15 p.m. in the south parking lot of the campus, Fremont police Sgt. Chris Mazzone said.

Police cordoned off the area and called the bomb squad, which eventually used a water cannon to destroy the device, the sergeant said. When it blew up, there was a brief cloud of orange mist and some dried residue left behind.

The Fremont Fire Department's hazardous materials team then was dispatched to the scene, but could not immediately determine what the orange substance was. Police collected samples of it and sent it to a lab for analysis, Mazzone said. Anyone with information may call police at (510) 790-6900.

That's exactly the right thing to do.

After receiving a package like that I would also, put it outside and/or away from the living area and wash my hands with soap and water.

'Al-Qaeda' threatens to kill newspaper editor (Australia)
January 24, 2007

A man claiming to represent al-Qaeda in Australia has left a telephone message at an Arabic Australian newspaper threatening to kill its editor-in-chief and destroy its offices in Sydney and Melbourne.

Apparently reading from a script, the Arabic-speaking caller threatened to butcher every Iraqi Kurd and Shiite in Australia. ASIO and NSW police are investigating the message, left for al-Furat editor-in-chief Hussein Khoshnow 10 days ago. The caller claims his "well-structured organisation" will track down the names and addresses of the newspaper's reporters.

"We will destroy the newspaper's headquarters in Sydney very soon, God willing," the caller says. "We will destroy the newspaper's headquarters in Melbourne. You will be butchered. Every Iraqi Kurd and Shiite in Australia will be butchered." The threats, made on Sunday, January 14, were left on the answering machine in the newspaper's Fairfield office. They appeared to have been written down and then read over the phone in Arabic.

"Judging by the voice, I think it was a young man and from the way he spoke Arabic, his vocabulary and his accent, I think he might have been born here but of Yemeni or Syrian origin," Mr Khoshnow said.

Suicide bomber kills five in N. Waziristan
January 23, 2007 Tuesday Muharram 03, 1428 Ali

A suicide bomber on Monday rammed his explosives-laden car into a military convoy near Mirali, North Waziristan Agency, killing four security personnel and a woman, and injuring 23, including 20 soldiers, officials and eyewitnesses said. The incident occurred at the Khajori checkpoint, about two kilometres east of Mirali town, when a joint convoy of the army and paramilitary force was heading from the Bannu Garrison to Miramshah, the restive region’s administrative headquarters.

A militant commander in the neighbouring South Waziristan Agency, Baitullah Mehsud, had vowed last week to avenge the Hamzola air strike in which over 10 people were killed and eight others wounded. Witnesses said that three military vehicles and a passenger coach were also damaged in the first deadly attack since the government and Taliban-backed tribal insurgents signed a peace agreement on Sept 5, 2006. Army and paramilitary troops had vacated the Khajori checkpoint as per condition of the peace deal and it is now managed by members of the Khasaddar force.

Militants in the North Waziristan promptly denounced the incident and claimed they were not involved in the attack. A statement issued from the security office of the Taliban, North Waziristan, said: “We (Taliban) have no hand in the bomb attack and we want to keep the peace agreement intact and the government should also act upon the deal”.

UK airline bomb suspects "radicalized in weeks"
Wed Jan 24, 2007

LONDON - A group of British Muslims suspected of plotting to blow up U.S.-bound airliners flying from Britain had been radicalized in just weeks or months, Britain's top police officer said on Wednesday.

British detectives announced last August they had foiled a suicide bomb plot to blow up planes using liquid explosives. Officers have charged 15 people over the suspected plot with offences including conspiracy to murder and planning acts of terrorism. The suspects are due to go on trial next year.

"One of the really shocking things ... is the apparent speed with which young, reasonably affluent, some reasonably well-educated, British-born people were converted," London police chief Ian Blair told a conference on Islamophobia. He said the suspects had been converted "from what would appear to be ordinary lives in a matter of some weeks and months, not years, to a position where they were allegedly prepared to commit suicide and murder thousands of people."

British authorities are trying to understand what has caused a growth in extremism among the country's 1.8 million Muslims, dramatically exemplified by the July 2005 suicide bomb attacks on London's transport system by four British Islamists who killed themselves and 52 other people.

Jihad In Trinidad
1/23/2007

Homeland Security: There's a lot of talk about al-Qaida safe havens in Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq. But the FBI is closely watching a potential hot spot in our own hemisphere. Al-Qaida is suspected of having set up a front in the Caribbean island state of Trinidad, and sympathetic jihadists have already launched a movement there to replace Trinidad's Westernized government with Islamic law.

The militant Muslim group Jamaat al-Muslimeen staged a bloody coup attempt in Trinidad last decade that involved the firebombing of police headquarters in Port-of-Spain. A rash of bombings over the past couple of years has been linked to the group, whose leader, Yasin Abu Bakr, recently was released from prison after claiming to be ill.

Local police had arrested him in 2005 after raiding his headquarters and seizing high-powered rifles, grenades, walkie-talkies and 700 rounds of ammo. He awaits trial for inciting religious violence and terrorism. The number of Bakr's followers is said to be growing, along with the number of kidnappings, murders and bombings in Trinidad. And fears are growing within the Department of Homeland Security and FBI that Trinidadian jihadists could train and export terrorists to strike the U.S.

Trinidad might be harboring the "next Mohamed Atta," a college-educated, English-speaking Saudi native known within al-Qaida as "Jafar the pilot." His real name is Adnan El Shukrijumah, and the FBI considers him "armed and dangerous." He's been connected to al-Qaida plots to attack America with dirty bombs.

Local papers report that Shukrijumah has stayed with friends in Trinidad, and worshiped at local mosques, indicating a possible cell exists there. U.S. authorities at Miami International Airport are closely monitoring inbound flights from that area.

The FBI's Web site says Shukrijumah "carries a Guyanese passport but may attempt to enter the United States with a Trinidadian passport." Shukrijumah's late father is Guyanese. He taught Arabic and lectured in mosques there and in Trinidad before moving to America to work for the Saudi Embassy and then run a small radical mosque in Florida (which was bankrolled by the former Saudi ambassador, according to Newsweek). Shukrijumah still has relatives in Guyana, which is near Trinidad.

So is Venezuela, headed by the anti-American thug Hugo "El Diablo" Chavez, who could ally himself with jihadists against their common enemy. A jihad domino effect in our hemisphere isn't far-fetched. If Fidel Castro dies, it would create a power vacuum in Cuba that could be filled by jihadists. Haiti also is vulnerable, and could fall to Islamists.

U.S. authorities worry that Caribbean blacks have been targeted by al-Qaida for Islamic conversion and recruitment along with African-Americans. Though the majority of Trinidad's population is Christian, its Muslim population is growing. The communists tried to set up a beachhead in Grenada during the Cold War. We did not hesitate to stop them. Trinidad may not be the next Grenada, but we certainly can't risk letting al-Qaida raise its black flag of jihad in our hemisphere

France: Agents arrest four terror suspects
Jan. 24, 2007

French intelligence agents have arrested four people believed linked to terror suspects detained in Syria several months ago, officials said Wednesday.

Three men and one woman were detained Tuesday and were in custody in Tours, a city southwest of Paris, according to the French national police. The four are believed linked to two Frenchmen charged in November with suspected terrorist ties after they were expelled from Syria, police said.

Those men, from near Tours, had traveled to Syria in October and were allegedly planning to continue to Iraq, but were arrested by Syrian authorities who suspected them of terrorist connections, according to French judicial officials. Investigators are trying to determine whether the men were traveling on their own or as part of a broader terrorist network.

Held In Contempt, Al-Arian Launches Hunger Strike
Jan 24, 2007

TAMPA - Sami Al-Arian has begun another hunger strike after being held in contempt for refusing to testify before a grand jury in Virginia, his supporters say.

In the meantime, Al-Arian has appealed an order with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that says his plea agreement in Tampa does not protect him from having to testify in Virginia.

Scientists tighten security over germ terror threat
January 25, 2007

Britain’s laboratories have been ordered to strengthen security on stocks of more than 100 deadly viruses and bacteria after an MI5 warning that Islamic terrorists are training in germ warfare. The biological agents include polio, rabies, tuberculosis and avian flu. Food poisoning bacteria such as E. coli and the sources of a number of rare tropical and Middle Eastern illnesses are also included.

Scientists and laboratory staff in universities, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies who deal with agents will have to be vetted by police, and their laboratories will be checked by government safety inspectors. Stock will have to be regularly audited.

The crackdown comes after MI5 privately warned the Foreign and Commonwealth Office that al-Qaeda was actively recruiting scientists. Extremist groups are known to have targeted students, offering to fund courses in return for using their newly acquired expertise.

"DVD case goes to grand jury
Three implicated in bogus sales"

By Paul A. Long
Post staff reporter

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Three men charged with selling thousands of counterfeit DVDs will face a grand jury after a federal judge-magistrate said he heard enough evidence to move the case forward.

Two of the defendants, one from Morocco, one from Jordan, will remain in the Grant County Jail until questions about their immigration status are answered.

Hicham Tibtani, 35, a Moroccan national living in Edgewood, is believed to be the one who made the DVDs and accompanying counterfeit labels, a police detective testified during a hearing Monday in U.S. District Court in Covington.

Abdulnaser Al-Sweity, 35, from Jordan, owned two stores where the DVDs were sold, police said.

"It was a massive operation," said the detective, who asked not to be identified because of the ongoing investigation.

A third man, Abdelati Nachat, 28, a Moroccan living in Covington, was a clerk at the Greenup Market, where police said the DVDs were sold. He was released on $5,000 bond, but U.S. District Judge Magistrate J. Gregory Wehrman told him to find other employment."
