Reunited At Last! This Is David, The Brother I Lost Just 1,000 Years Ago

Reunited at last! This is David, the brother I lost just 1,000 years ago

Gene study is throwing a new light on our nation's history - and our personal ancestry, reports science editor Robin McKie

Sunday December 31, 2006
The Observer (UK)

A scientific revolution is taking place in the study of our ancient past. Once the preserve of academics who analysed prehistoric stones and crumbling parchment, the subject has been transformed by the study of our genes by scientists who are using the blood of the living to determine the actions of men and women centuries ago. In the process, a mass of fascinating information about our predecessors has been revealed, from the physical appearance of Britain's first Stone Age settlers to the impact that invading Romans, Saxons and Normans had on our bloodline.

The approach can turn history into an extraordinary, personal business, as I found when I started researching a book on the subject. I have often been asked if I am related to the Guardian writer David McKie. The distinguished columnist and former deputy editor has my surname, though David comes from north London while I am Glaswegian. Little common ancestry there, it seemed. But now David has been revealed to be my long-lost 'brother'. Our DNA shows that, between AD1000 and 1400, either in Ireland or Scotland, our lineages shared a common ancestor, a grandfather of multiple 'greatness'. Even better, that ancestor turns out to have been a direct descendant of the Irish king Niall of the Nine Hostages, who created a vast fifth-century dynasty around modern Strabane. David and I are related to a notorious Irish warlord. Not bad for a pair of old Fleet Street hacks.

Very interesting graphics. Who spoke Celtic Manx ?

The Manx people - inhabitants of the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man is in the Irish Sea in between Britain and Ireland. The Manx language is still spoken.

"Have you read "Albion's Seed?" I've heard it's outstanding (expensive, but outstanding). "

Looks like some copies can be had as low as $15.00, not bad.

Albion's Seed.

Published in 1991. In today's fast paced DNA studies...it may be a little dated. I may check it out though. Thanks.

Modern 'Conservatism' is a term that has come to mean many things. For example, there are Compassionate Conservatives who promote huge government spending programs. Perhaps the genetic distinctions can become clearer if you examine the qualities of 'individualism' or 'self-reliance' or 'self-government'. The US was originally a nation built by individualists who built a government founded on self governing principles. It was based on individual enlightenment which was a movement away from the tyrannical Kingdoms of Europe. If one looks at the type of Europeans who were originally attracted to this New World, it may have been those who believed in the concept of self-reliance or self-governance. Or in a general sense it would have been those families who were not prospering under the previous tyrannical rule of European Kingdoms. Some of these American immigrants may have also included royal blood lines who had lost their kingdoms, but in general our nation was originally inhabited by families who left European Kingdoms for the Enlightenment of Self Rule and Limited Government. The New World. The New Found Land. There might be some genetic differences still in play in modern times, but it can be very difficult to discern them in our current mixed gene pool. My ancestors include, in descending order, Scottish, Polish, Austrian, British and American Indian. Kind of hard to determine gene related behavioral traits with a mixed breed like that. But in general my ancestors (except the American Indians) all left Europe 100 to 300 years ago for a better place. The American Indians however, left Siberia 15,000 years ago for a better place. All of these races originally came from Kazakhstan 20 to 30 thousand years ago. Some went east and some went west, but they all eventually ended up in the New World.

"....I'm of British descent from around York. FReeper Torie told me that a lot of Vikings settled there. Don't know for sure though. The strides being made with DNA will have us all 'nailed-down' in a few years...."

"York" is a corruption of the Norse name Yorvik (pronounced yor-wick). The root of the word is vik (wick), which is a word meaning castle or stronghold. The term "wick" is still used in Scotland to refer to old castle ruins.

Hmmmm. My grandparents, both sides, were from a small Alabama town named Wicksburg.
